Virus help. :x

A few days ago my computer contracted two viruses called Win32:JunkPoly [Cryp] and Win32.Vitro. I do believe I've managed to get rid of them, but during the time when I was fighting them off, I downloaded several different anti-malware products to make sure that I got rid of those viruses.

During this time, I tried a malware scanner called SpyHunter that detected several instances of the Zlob trojan on my computer. Now, I may not be hugely experienced with the world of viruses, but even I know that the Zlob trojan is supposed to be a scary one to get.

My problem, however, is this - SpyHunter is the ONLY scanner that tells me that I have the Zlob trojan. I've used several other scanners - Spybot S&D, Ad-Aware, Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware, Comodo Internet Security, Avast! Antivirus (both regular and boot scans) and all have come up clean since I removed the two viruses I mentioned earlier.

Beyond that, I've gone to SpyHunter's webpage which lists step-by-step instructions on how to remove Zlob from your computer manually, but the list of possible infections and processes that the instructions say Zlob uses don't exist on my computer, so I'm not sure that I actually have it on my computer. Can anyone recommend a way for me to find out if I have this trojan once and for all? I don't want to pay for SpyHunter's program to remove something I don't have.

As I write this I'm currently updating my Spybot and Ad-Aware and I'm going to scan again. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help me out.

Spyhunter isn't the most reliable product around. Have you tried scanning with a real antivirus product? A number of antivirus providers offer free online scans, if you don't have an antivirus program installed. Here are a couple of online scanners with conveniently linkable urls.

ESET online scanner

McAfee online scanner

If you run one of these scans, and it doesn't tell you that your system is infected, Spyhunter was probably just mistaken.

Or you have a rootkit that's masquerading as a virus/trojan. Of course, unless you boot from some other media, there's no way to know for certain that you *don't* have a rootkit.

If you find out it is a rootkit, your only real option is to reinstall the OS (preferably after a full repartition).

I can't get either of the scanners you listed to run, Kali, but I think I'm just gonna go with mith's suggestion and reinstall my OS.

Good luck! Don't forget to make a list of all data you want to back up before you do your backups.

Here's a list of commonly deleted things to make sure you don't forget (don't copy any executables!):

* web bookmarks
* email folders (with attachments)
* document folders
* video game save folders
* IM/Skype user information (if you've forgotten the passwords)
* calandar exports from outlook or iCal.
* custom settings from favorite apps

I've already backed up my bookmarks, but I'm still backing up my files (music, photos, anime, manga and such) and it's taking forever, lol. I need to back up my video game saves, too, but I'm saving that for last. I'm hoping to have everything backed up (I'm putting most of my anime and such on data DVD's so they won't eat up HD space post-reformat) and reformatted by the end of the week.
