The "Kokoro is mad at IE" thread

....I can't believe that IE has finally run into a problem with spy/adware that I can't seem to fix. Apparently some adware known as "shopnav" or "srnp" got onto my system and did a whole lot of messing things up. Of course I removed that sucker as soon as I knew something was amiss...but then the real problem reared its ugly head. I can't access ANY webpage in IE (aside from ones I already have saved onto the hard disk) without getting redirected to a 404 error page. I don't know how to possibly fix this. I did a sweep of my computer and I can't find any files that would go hand in hand with the shopnav program...I've tried everything from deleting all my temporary internet files to uninstalling and reinstalling IE. So now I'm here, typing this from Netscape while I'm really really annoyed with IE and adware.

I don't have a clue what's wrong with IE, but I think there is a method that could help.

1)Click on Start > Settings > Control Panel.
2)Click on Add/Remove Programs.
3)Search through the list for Internet Explorer x and Internet Tools.
4a)Choose the option for Repair Internet Explorer.
5)Click OK.
4b)if step 4a did not work then repeat step 3 (assuming you haven't already closed out of Add/Remove Programs) and Choose the option for Restore the previous Windows configuration.

I that helps if you haven't already tried it.

Ooh, so the program damaged IE when you deleted it... That really sucks... Maybe it put a block on IE if you tried to delete it (that would make it a trojan, wouldn't it?) You may wanna do a spyware search to see if any of the spyware's bits and pieces are left dangling on your computer. If it really does this much damage, maybe a virus scan can catch it. I don't have norton or anything, but I just use a free online scan on http://housecall.trendmicro.com/housecall/start_corp.asp though Norton or McAffee will probably work better for something like this.

I only say a virus scan may catch it because some of the worst spyware proggies are considered trojans and are registered in the virus databases for the scan programs.

I of all people haven't a clue what to say. I kept getting problems with IE so I finally gave up after my brother told me to download Avant. In my family I work with trying to learn what I can html/css wise as well as graphics, I leave everything else to my father and brother. I can of course talk to my dad and see if anything comes to mind. As long as I can get online and not have to worry about popups and the such I'm pretty much happy ^^; But I will talk to my dad.

Mr. Cookie has the right idea. IE is such a bad boy I didn't even bother to put it in a corner, I booted that sucker right out the door.

Look around for HijackThis... it's a program that will look at possible hijack points on your windows system (specifically IE) and let you know what's up (there is also a "shredder" program that will take care of a line of spyware/hijackers that are extra difficult to get rid of).

Frankly I'd get rid of IE all together (keep the HTML render for those things that REALLY thing they need it, but give the rest the boot). In the end you'll be much better off.
