Webcomic Server

Postby mechana2015 » Sat Feb 28, 2004 4:25 pm

Hey, I'm trying to set up a webcomic site...does anyone know a good free server that would allow this sort of a site on it?

Man...if I knew what was happening to one of mine, I'd offer you space there...FTP, PHP, unlimited space (within reason)...but I don't. If you're interested in waiting a bit, I might be able to help you out anyway. At least you wouldn't have to worry about some free server getting an itchy delete finger.

I don't use any program for my site i do it from scratch.

Well if you want go to my site and get my source code

http://www.animenewstoday.com/english/freeweb/

And make sre it's a good free site ^_^

To post my manga pages, I don't use an authoring tool, I use a PHP script called Mangaview and just link to it from my main page.

http://www.flactem.com/mangaview/

You won't have to program each of your manga pages - you just drop the images into a directory, edit a file, and upload it...:) So much faster.

For the creation of my actual webpages, I use a program called 1st Page Express. You can get this from here:

http://www.evrsoft.com/

For FTP; I use CuteFTP.

I think I'll be taking a look at that myself; FrontPage Express is all right for doing basic stuff, but this looks like it would be good for some more complicated stuff. Thanks for that info, Ink. ^_^

You betcha MM...^^

There's also another program I have on my drive called NoteTab Light. It's similar to 1st Page, with two notable exceptions (or that's what I've noticed in my limited amount of time working with the program). NoteTab allows you to open batches of HTML files at once, whereas 1st Page, while allowing more than one file to be -open- in memory, won't let you open more than one from a single "open" dialogue box. I hope that made sense...^^ Also, 1st Page has different difficulty modes, having a smaller, more efficient mode for experts (or I suppose it's so, since I don't use it), and an easy mode for dopes like me who like big shiny buttons.

Do any of those have graphic editing (not tag based) page construction? EG a more complicated version of the tripod engine with customizable buttons and more fonts and placement options. (Yeah I'm lazy and dont want to learn programming language)

No, I'm afraid not. -_-;; There is a more limited pool of WYSIWYG editors out there, among them FrontPage, Dreamweaver, Composer and others. I personally do not recommend any of these if you plan to go in-depth with your site construction. They have a tendency to tear up code (some worse than others) and if you're using Microsoft Word's HTML editor (BAD IDEA, btw) it will become all but unreadable. So if you think you'll want to do very much of this, you'll definitely want to pick up learning at least very basic HTML (you can get by on remarkably little.) However, 1st Page is the next best thing, automating many tasks such as table creation and image insertion, and also allows you to preview what's going on at any time with a handy tab. It would be a good program to learn with. It even comes with an HTML reference e-book built into the program.

>Woah INKY you changed your site!!!Oh never mind..wait yes you did....

Inky??? If you have 1 & 1 hosting then sign into your account and then check the statistics. It'll tell you EVERYTHING...from individual hits to graphs, to how long people stay online and how much time they spend on a page... Also how much of your space your taken up.

Yeah...I did. :) That kinda came out of left field...^^;;;

>If your a pro-web programmer then you can make your own style HTML tables and all. Just copy, paste, and FTP.

Eeek...I used to do that...I'm afraid I can't really recommend working on a new HTML page for each manga page. I've looked at the code for Mangaview before and it wouldn't be any particular trouble to change buttons, colors, etc to make it mesh with your site.

I think it'll be a good news for everyone...

For my major year 12 senior programming project, I'll be making a web management package, in PHP. It is supposedly able to allow people to upload whatever to their servers, with pretty pages they can customise themselves, and you can see pretty much any statistic (how many downloads, visitors, their time of stay, their IP addresses, browsers, blah blah blah) of that specific page. Also should have graphs in it.

And uploading will be done forum style; no more FTPing. And you can pretty much upload as MANY as you want, and if you want to can write something like ranting or comments on it.

Only because some hosts doesn't offer statistics (like mine), leaving you to estimate. This program should either make your life easier, or make your life easier.

Project is due at end of August. Blah, ages to go.

i'm pretty surprised no one's mentioned http://www.keenspace.com yet (or am i so terribly out of date already? XD). Keenspace has always been the popular server for indie webcomics. the site's exactly made for that purpose. it's free and it's got ads, yeah, but it's also got a good user-friendly transfer program for your manga files that would automatically insert them in your main manga page so you can update it easily. gives you an initial 25 megs, but if you need more, you just have to tell them, i think. s'been a long time since i was there.

personally, i've always hand-coded all my pages in Notepad. i like being in complete control.

umm I just got this program, and it sounds like a good problem... the only problem I had was that Norton detected a Trojan Horse in the programming and deleted it...fortunately the program seems to work fine.

Oh, yes, I forgot about that. That's not actually a Trojan horse. There is a database of scripts contained within the program and for some reason one of them trips up anti-virus. The script itself is actually harmless, as far as I can tell.

If you don't want to deal with a webpage, Keenspace may be the way to go for you...:thumb:

Wow. I feel so honored. So THAT's who those other downloaders were! Thanks for the glowing report, Ink!

And volt - don't you DARE muck with my code! j/k.

(For those of you not "in" on the joke, I wrote MangaView in a fit of 'niceness' toward Ink. If you need features that aren't there, let me know. I occasionally add features, etc based on user input.)

-OldPhilosoper.

EDIT: I just noticed how horridly the linewraps migrated from one server to the next. I have totally redone them (if you downloaded MV and it looked like it was all on one line, or had tones of ^Ms all over the place - that's fixed now).

And it ain't easy to have a fit of niceness toward me! Bwa haha...

Seriously though, I did come up with a handful of other features that I think would be cool for Mangaview (none obligatory of course, except the need to be able to add more issues) I won't clutter up the thread talking about them here, though...:)

Well, if there is, I didn't put it there. O,o It could be that someone hacked the system and put one there, but I don't *think* they did. I have my own demo site, which explores the limits of my ability to draw, but not much else. Anyway, I'm glad so many people are interested in it.

BTW: Ink has given me some good feedback, and soon I will put up a "wish list" of features to be added. Out of curiosity, is it worth it to have a "mailing list" for this tool, to let people know when there are updates?
