I, too, am glad to see the thread continued.

I skid painfully on the ground.
skidded

his dark-brown-straight-haired head
This is really awkward. Have you not yet described his hair to the reader? If you have, you can omit this conglomeration of adjectives. If this is the place you want to mention his hair, I would advise punctuating it like this: his dark brown, straight-haired head.

large, long shadows
This is redundant.

look on my works, ye mighty, and despair!â€

Well, here's some more ^^

The intense light subsided, gradually relieving my watering eyes. I realized, by intuition, that my surroundings were much different from the dome room. It seemed blurred, as if in a dream.

A cool breeze brushed softly against my face, with a slight, sweet scent of pollen. I heard the faint trickling of water and the rustle of leaves around me.

When my eyes recovered, I could see no sign of entranced Hawthorne and Blanc. This new place had a golden hue, as if it was late afternoon. Not too far away in front of me, a large stone-basin fountain poured golden-lit water; on the top basin was a wingspread stone falcon.

Deeply inhaling the sweet air and staring sleepily at the fountain, I did not see the figure standing behind it, staring directly at me. He walked, with slow steps, around the fountain towards me, but I did not hear his footsteps on the tile. Stepping into my view, he finally broke the trance.

Still on my knees, I dreamily looked up into this stranger’s face. When my gaze touched his, my heart nearly stopped. I gaped and stared, wide-eyed, at his glowing white eyes.

His radiant white hair flowed on its own, independent of the occasional breeze. On his face was a warm smile, and on his forehead was the blue mark of the wing. I gasped.

“You’re the man—the Aegis,” I whispered.

His shining stare burned into me as if he was looking into my very soul…

“Arden. Fiery and strong-willed.” A voice (which strangely sounded like three voices—one very deep, one a whisper, and one an ordinary man’s voice) echoed through the ethereal courtyard. Even though his lips were not moving, I could tell the voice belonged to him. Gathering up courage, I stammered—

“W-Who are you?”

“I am he who defends. I am The Guardian, Lord Aegis.” His gaze did not waver.

I couldn’t believe this was happening to me—of all people in this world. A million other questions raced through my mind, but one question troubled me the most. I couldn’t hold it in.

“Why me?” I boldly asked, my voice gaining volume. “Why was I chosen? I’m a nobody, I mean, I’m not worthy to--“

“Silence!” The Lord Aegis’ voice resounded with frightening power, and an angry force filled the air. “I know who is and who is not worthy to become an Aegis…

My heart jumped in fear and I held my breath.

His voice then quieted to a whisper, “You, Arden, are worthy.” His mouth returned to the warm smile. “You underestimate my power…and yourself, young one.”

I avoided his gaze, pondering his words and the past events. I thought of my silly mistakes, my previous occupations, and my failed apprenticeship. My heart sank with self-doubt.

“I’m not good enough,” I whispered to myself, turning my head away from him.

I thought of sad-faced Warren and Vera, standing in the doorway, watching me leave with Hawthorne and Blanc. Nostalgia tugged at my heart. The Lord Aegis seemed to be reading my thoughts and seeing my memories.

“Think of those you love…your village, this world. Think of the lives lost…” He said softly.

Immediately, the image of Alandar laying lifeless on the ground, eyes fixed on me, returned as vivid as yesterday.

I absentmindedly whispered his name. Every time I dreamed, I saw his haunting eyes. I also dreamt of the silhouette cloaked in black—the dark curse that plagued this world.

“He’s relentless—the Specter,” I muttered in despair. He murdered so many people…friends, neighbors, Alandar…my parents. I choked back tears. It happened so long ago—I couldn’t even remember how they looked.

A cool breeze brushed past my face and the leaves of the trees rustled.

“Arden, do not despair. I will be with you, and so will my power…”

My eyes returned to the Lord Aegis. In his hands were a silver-hilted sword and a silver goblet, inlaid with pearls.

He approached me; with pale fingers, he handed me the goblet. When my hands brushed his cold hand, a chill ran up my arms.

“Drink. It is water from this fountain.”

I reluctantly brought the goblet to my lips; in it, I could see the reflection of my golden eyes peering back at me with uncertainty. Tilting the goblet, I drank the cool water which tasted like nothing I have ever tasted before.

As I lowered the goblet, the rune-engraved blade of the sword touched my left then right shoulder, and stopped to rest on top of my head. I bowed my head.

“I anoint you, Aegis Arden. Your duty is to protect. You are now a guardian of this realm. The Dark is falling upon us; do not forget what I have told you.”

As he was saying this, a rising force—the same one I felt when the falcon landed on me—thrived inside of my soul. It kept growing, to the point that I felt like my mind would explode.

My breathing became hard. Falling forward, I kept myself up with both hands on the cold, marble floor.

The Lord Aegis removed his sword.

I, Shona, Guardian and Lord Aegis, Awaken you from your Slumber.”

The immense power took over; I gasped. Darkness began to envelope me…

Hmm, white text? That made it a bit hard to read....

I did not see the figure standing behind it, staring directly at me. He walked, with slow steps, around the fountain towards me, but I did not hear his footsteps on the tile. Stepping into my view, he finally broke the trance.

Just a small bit of logic here: If Arden hasn't noticed the figure yet, how can he be describing what it's doing? That could work in certain forms of 3rd person, but not in 1st person as your narrative is. You could instead have Arden draw certain conclusions about the figure's behavior after noticing how close it had crept to him.
When my gaze touched his, my heart nearly stopped

I like that you're trying to freshen up the description, but 'touched' just doesn't quite work. Find a different verb.

Boy! Thanks Eso XD!

I always have problems with 1st person--I mean, it's so limited and I make those mistakes quite often ^^'

Hehe, "your da man." I was listening to music while proofreading (yeh, bad idea), so it didn't notice it .

P.S.: Yeh, my monitor's brightness is turned really low, so I wasn't aware of the blaring white letters, hehehe. I'll find a better color ^^

Ok--Is this better Eso? I like this shade, hehe.

I don’t know who long I lay unconscious, but it felt like days. When I awoke, I yawned and shivered from cold sweat.

Whoa…Where am I?

Propping myself up with my elbows, I surveyed my surroundings. I was in a rather large but comfortable bed. Sunlight streamed through a tall, opened window with scarlet curtains that flapped in the breeze. In one corner of the room was a mahogany drawer, and in another corner was an inclined desk with a candlestick, a bottle of ink, parchment, and a quill. Next to my bed were my satchel, my black leather shoes, and my sheathed sword.

I stared thoughtfully at the window, recalling the past events.

I can’t believe this is happening to me. I met the Lord Aegis!

His majestic image gave me a sense of awe. Warren would never believe this. I smiled to myself at the thought of Warren. He’s so skeptical.

A weird fizzing noise broke the silence. Startled, I looked around the room, searching for the source. It came from the door.

A mysterious, glowing bluish-white spot appeared on its surface. To my horror, it expanded and started to bulge into a sphere of some kind. I then realized that this sphere—or wisp—was passing through the door into the room.

I stared wide-eyed, mouth agape, while it floated in midair for a moment—then zoomed up to my face. I backed away, in fright, against the bedpost.

The wisp was so close to my nose, I could feel the tiny hairs on it stand up from the wisp’s aura. I squinted from the bright light and turned my head away.

At that moment, it zoomed away from my face, around the room, and then through the door.

What in the world was that?

Curious, I quickly pushed back the sheets, jumped out of bed, opened the door and ran after it. Barefoot on the cold tile floor, I ran with, strange new agility, down the gray-walled corridor, following the direction of the fizzing noise. When I turned a corner, I abruptly ran into Blanc.

The momentum and surprise of our collision knocked us backward.

“What are you doing?” He asked in his patronizing tone.

Startled by his presence, I replied, “T-There was some…some weird glowing thing—a wisp—“ I stopped, suddenly embarrassed by my childish behavior.

Blanc raised an eyebrow.

I sheepishly laughed.

He gave a smirk in return, then walked past me, saying, “Awakened and at the peak of adolescence. Be more careful when chasing lights.”

I stared at him as he walked off. Sheesh, he’s so arrogant.

“Oh, Hawthorne sent me to summon you,” he said walking off.

“Wait—how am I supposed to get there? I’m not acquainted with this place! Hey!” I yelled after him. He didn’t turn around.

Either he’s too far away—or he’s blatantly ignoring me. I think he blatantly ignored me. I sighed. Why do I have the feeling I annoy him?

Here's some more....I'm excited--It gets better ^^

I stood there, dazed and puzzled, wondering in which direction to travel and where to find Hawthorne.

Uh…maybe I should follow Blanc?

I ran in the direction in which he left. He’s probably too far away now. Hmm…from what I’ve heard, Aegi can sense the presence of other Aegi.

Oooh definitely picking up, Darkelfy. I like the kinda symbolic sounding language with the fountain and the Lord Aegis - especially when you described his voice(s). Blanc is great. XP Very smooth.

My only crit would be the same as Eso's - I was wondering how he was describing the Aegis yet describing him by saying he couldn't see him. XD Maybe he sensed him?

Thanks Temmy Dearest! ^^
I love Blanc too. He's so...blank.

Yeh, that's a 1st person mistake...he wouldn't be able to sense him until after his Awakening... hehe, I was going to explain some more but that would give away the plot ^^'

I love strange out-of-this-world names ^^. Blanc is a very calm, sarcastic and condescending person--well, to Arden, hehe. You got him right. His other emotions will be revealed later.

Oh, from your earlier response--yeh, I gave Lord Aegis Shona that voice to show his power and mystery.

The green is a little better...but is there a slightly darker green you could choose to up the contrast? I dunno, maybe it's just me.

Interesting.... I'm wondering if this is a test. Why else would none of the other Aegi sense/respond to (I'm assuming) the Specter so close to their realm?

Yeh, I'll try a darker green ^^

About the other Aegi sensing the Specter---well, I can't say right now except to read the next entry, hehe.....

Later: I can't edit it....I guess when you log off and come back the next day the "edit" option goes away..

Hehe, glad you like it Eso (it is a relief on the eyes, hehe). Well, the bad news is that BOTH of my Aegis documents have vanished. The good news is that I copied and pasted it from off here, created 2 documents and emailed a copy to myself. I did a spyware scan to see if there was any malicious things on my PC. All solved ^^ (Praise God). Well, I pray, hehe. For some reason, anything that came under "aegis" vanished...hmmm...

My voice froze in my throat. My body became frigid.

It was him.

He stood silent, his face covered in shadow. I could tell he was observing me.

Fear like I never knew choked my senses. He laughed softly.

Hehe, here's more...pardon me for the "word" below (no...it's DEFINITELY not the f-bomb)--I just wanted to make the emotion realistic.

When the gold and brown bird met the ground, it changed into Blanc.

On his face was a scowl. He angrily bolted towards me.

Needless to say, I greatly liked this update for the addition of a nice, villainous scene. :sweat: The Specter's got a great chilling personality. I like the way he kinda toys with Arden's insecurities. Hmm... Blanc certainly freaked out... I wonder if he's hiding some deep dark secret. O.o;;

Thanks Temmy! Yeh, I really wanted to put the Specter in the story now...I love how he messes with Arden, too. That's one of his cunning ways to weaken his adversaries...especially new ones. Yeh, Blanc's secrets and history will be revealed very soon....

Oh, the d-word got blocked out? I sincerely apologize if I offended anyone, hehe. It's not something I normally put in my stories. Now that I think about it, that was really dumb because this is supposed to be a Christian allusion...:hits_self(I wanna make this into a Christian graphic novel ^^).

Later: *burning with guilt* Yeh, that was super dumb. Hope you guys forgive me and keep reading...*kawaii elfy eyes*...Wow I didn't know I had so many posts--in two months!

XD Yeah, the specter's quote kinda reminded me of that "What Not to Do If I Take Over the World" list. One of them was something like: "I WILL kill all rebels while they're still untrained rebellious youths rather than wait for them to grow up into well-trained rebellious adults!" But I figured in this case it was because the dude was still toying with the idea of Arden joining him. O.o;;

As for the d-word being blocked out, I gotta agree with Eso there. I think used d and h a few times in my writing but never went beyond that and usually portray it in a negative or impatient light for emotion. I mean, there's a balance, but I think it can strengthen some scenes rather than harm them. I wasn't offended.

Thanks Eso and Temmy ^^

Yeh....hehe....The Specter is a person that likes to be challenged...a threat is like a game to him. In other words, he likes "playing with fire" or "playing with his food" (well the first one sounded better). He's a complicated and arrogant character.

Yeh, I was wondering if the d-word sparked controversy on here, because I had a sudden amount of views after I posted that :eyebrow: *ehem*. I too thought that that brought out the real emotion of the scene...I don't accept strong language, but that sounded more realistic than "darn". I'll try to bring out the emotion without the words in the future.

XD. Randomness rules! I'm the apprentice of the Arch Censai of Randommancy, by the way. (If he read that line, he would instantly recognize my secret identity.)

Yep, that's the idea...the Specter likes fun and games (well, a twisted crush-the-realm-and-care-less-about-innocent-people form).

This has been an interesting week, hehe. Lots of stuff done and stuff to do! Here's more of Aegis (feels like a show on the "tellie" when I say that, hehe). Sorry for the indents ^^' I copied and pasted this from my PC and I'm too lazy to unindent it.

Clod. Clod. Clod. Clod. Our footsteps echoed throughout the dark hall, lit by glass sphere lamps identical to those in the dais room.

I solemnly walked between Hawthorne, deep in thought, and Blanc, who seemed unusually troubled instead of having his usual air of calm and indifference.

At the end of the hall were large double doors. With ease, Hawthorne pushed them open. A bright light poured out of the doors and spilled into the darkness.

When I entered the room, squinting, what I saw astounded me. The source of light was emanating from the something dangling from the ceiling—an enormous spiral chandelier. From each large spiral hand of the chandelier (there were eight) were many smaller spiral hands, which held different colors of glass spheres.

We were in a large round room—similar to the dais room. However, to my surprise, the walls of this room were composed of carved steps, like seats in an arena. On these steps were statues—not of normal men, women, or fairies…

XD Whooo! Go Blanc! He gets cooler with every post! Ha. I wonder if this is going to turn into a not-so-friendly rivalry between him and Arden.

I liked your history of how the Aegis came to be. Very detailed and realistic, and I liked where I think you're going with the rebellious Aegi. *Has a guess about the specter.* Hmm... and I wonder what they were going to say.

Hmm... unfortunately or fortunately I haven't been able to find many typo's in your writing lately. XP You darn AP English student you.

Only thing I could find was: "This is the Room of Radiance. In here, many a compact and quarrel were made” I think you meant a "pact" as in a deal/agreement? Otherwise I don't get the "compact" wordchoice. XD

Good, just wondering ^^

Eso: Yep! All of them. They were jealous of the Lord Aegis' power. Tsk, tsk.

Temmy: Thanks. Our teachers beat it into us. *shudders from memories* Haha. So you couldn't find any enemy-in-law? Aw. Another point for Darkelf! Hehe, nice guesses.

Yeh, I think pact is better than compact. Compact seems more of a size description.
