Ah, so I've just read chapter 107 of Death Note.

Don't read it if you don't want to, but...
Despite his efforts, Light is finally defeated. Light is dead.
Any thoughts?

The chapters are called "pages" in the manga.

This was an interesting ending. It looks as though there might be a chapter 108, and I hope that this will have a bit more resolution or look at the ramifications of what has happened. After all, I've found Death Note most appealing when it addresses issues of societal morality.

For safety's sake, I'll put all my specific comments about Page 107 in spoiler brackets.
Things progressed at their normal, inexorable pace. That is, things didn't immediately end once there was the big revelation. I don't think this is bad; it is very in character with the rest of Death Note. It also gave Light a chance to get really desperate. Am I alone in feeling he looked really pathetic in these recent chapters? I liked this, personally.

The final confrontation was suitably complicated. Not terribly advanced, but then again, real plans aren't and Death Note tends to reflect that. After all, Light beat L with a fairly simple strategy. Still, I would have liked to see the battle take on other dimensions as well (such as society declaring Kira to be just). None the less, I am glad that it ended now instead of dragging on.

I found the issue of life after death (or the lack thereof) odd. It didn't seem to have a place in this manga, so I wondered why it was included. Was this really what they had in mind from the very first chapter? I was expecting a lot more, thinking that Ryuk's lines in the opening would return in an ominous manner. Still, it was a fairly effective end for Light. I also have to say that Ryuk looks absolutely evil in this chapter.
whew! I'm finally caught up~

wow... page 107... O__O
Well now, Light is dead... I also found him increasingly desperate and pathetic in the last chapters. His appeal to me throughout the story was that he was always cool, calculating, and on top of things. I think it was a fitting end that when death finally caught up to him, he was terrified just like any other person.

I'm half happy and half sad that Light lost. He was obviously wrong, but I couldn't help but like him more than Near. Although as I got closer to the end I began to like Near more. I thought it was great that Mello and Near somewhat ended up catching Light together at the end. I have a love for villians and I dislike seeing a villian such as Light lose in such a way, but it was VERY adequate for the story and ended as well as I could have expected (after all it would have been weird if Light had won in the end).

Although I saw the ending - there being neither heaven nor hell after death - to be completely contrary to my beliefs (duh) I thought it was fitting for the story. Light ends up as nothingness, which is worse than heaven or hell for him.
I look forward to see how page 108 (assuming there is one) wraps this all up. Although I'm sad the series is ending, it makes more sense this way. It's much better than trying to drag it on.

I think it would be interesting to do character studies on the DN characters.

I agree with the general consensus
Light was pathetic at the end. He isn't a courageous man. He can't accept defeat. He can't accept death. He's scared

I wish they told us L's name

Maybe they still will tell L's name, but I doubt it somehow.
I was also a little disappointed that it wasn't Light's mistake that ended up bringing him down. It was someone else's fault. I think I would have been more satisfied if Light had been beaten because of a mistake he had made. Oh well, this way it's a sort of bitter irony. Exactly the kind I don't like.

You have an excellent point there kawaiineko. I think I will have to agree with you. But Near was tracking down ALL of Light's allies. To see if one of them would make the error in order to catch Light.

That's true but I still don't have to like it XD I am glad though that it was Ryuk who killed Light in the end. And it was a fitting end.. Ohba showed through the last chapters that Light wasn't really special. He was just a smart kid who got a lot of power. This was how he acted when he no longer had it.
Sorry for putting all my stuff in spoilers, but I would HATE to accidentally ruin a part of the books for someone. The suspense is the best part. If someone had ruined ch 58 for me I would have killed them XD

I don't know, I think part of the essence of his character is the fact that we don't know his name. When it didn't show it when he died, I assumed we wouldn't ever know.

I feel no sympathy for him. The only reason he won against L is because he was working from a tremendous advantage. But I do see where you are coming from.
Oh, you mean the one where we find out Light is really an alien? ...kidding, kidding.
I agree. Had L known what Near knew he would have had no trouble taking Light down. Once they knew how Light killed people, he was pretty much sunk.

Actually from the very beginning, if he hadn't killed Raye Penbar he would have probably not been caught (as quickly... I have faith in L XD).
I'm going to double post here b/c another thread would be irrelevent...

Did anyone else think the last chapter (108) was a little weak? The ends were kinda tied up, but there are definitely some loose ends. I wanted to know how Light's family was doing, or if Misa was still alive.
Some people think the girl at the end is Misa... thoughts?
The entire chapter just felt kind of abrupt. I wish there had been a little more of an end.
Well, Misa did get her memories taken away. So she no longer knew that Raito was Kira. (Because the other lawyer dude took the notebook) However she still loved Raito. Unless she somehow touched the notebook, theres no way of MIsa remembering that Raito was Kira.

But that doesn't take away the fact that Misa still knew about Kira. I think she kinda worshipped him because he killed the man that was after her or something.

She looks a lot like Misa too...

Crazy cults...
And here I am, having not read 108 yet. It sounds as though neither of you were impressed, and unless I feel very differently that probably means I will be disappointed. When it was confirmed there was a chapter after 107 I was hoping it would be used for resolution.

Well, I wasn't really impressed, but I didn't think it was too bad. It didn't resolve some things though.
I wanted to see how the other Yagimi family members would react
Okay, after doing some thinking over it, I've come up with a good explanation of my veiws on the series, and why I liked the ending.
Essentially, Light won. Actually that's not true. Light lost, but Kira won. Kira has made an indeniable impact on the world. Also, I think "Kira" is more of an ambiguous title.

As for L, the reason we never find out his name is simple. "L" is the same as Kira, or rather, the opposing force to Kira. Anyone can be L, and anyone can be Kira. Whether it's Yagami Light, Nate River, or--er--Ryuuzaki.. whatever, they can all be L. They all are L. Same with Kira. Kira in my eyes is a force, not a person, just like L.

Going back to my point, I liked chapter 108. I think a lot of people looked at Death Note in a far too literal sense. A lot of people complain about not finding out L's real name, or how they disliked the ending. I liked it after I took the time to let it sink in. What do we see? We see things on a grander-scale. I liked how Death Note began with a simple high-school student and evolved into international affairs. In the end, we see that "Kira" has in a sense won the battle, because Kira made an impact on the world around him. We also see that another person is now L. It's a never ending battle.
Yes, I know that was kinda redundant.
I did like the cult at the end, and now that you mention that I appreciate it even more. It shows that even though Light as Kira is gone, he can never REALLY be gone anymore. The world has been changed. Come to think of it, if Ryuk ever gets bored again he'll have a playground all set up for him (assuming he can get an extra notebook)
I'm also not annoyed that they never told the first L's real name. What would the point be? Whooo~ We would know his name <.<; Big deal. The point of L is the idea behind him, not the name.
One thing I am disappointed about is that we never saw more of the shinigami world. There were only a few veiled references to the King of the Dead, but those were never explored. I do understand how this is outside the focus and why they likely didn't take this very far, but I was somewhat expecting it.

Having now read 108, I have one thing to say for certain: the fact that a lot of it was analysis seemed very in keeping with Death Note as a whole.
As for the girl at the end being Misa... I don't see what the point of using an entire page to show her face was unless we were supposed to recognize her, but I really don't think she looks similar enough. Since I assume the purpose of the ending was what Joshua Christopher explained, I don't think that was the best way to do it (a panned back shot of lots of people, for example, would have been more effective).

Regarding that, actually: I agree with about everything you said. However, I don't particularly like the ending; it seems too simple to me. Also, if no shinigami interfere (a complete unknown, obviously) the Kira-followers seem more miserable than ominous.

However, will the cult ever die? Lets say 100 or 200 years passed. Would the cult still be strong? Would members give up on Kira?

Or would someone return with another death note? (Highly unlikely)
