The Correct Pronunciation for Manga

PostPosted: Mon Feb 14, 2005 1:18 pm

I've heard manga said so many different ways. I've heard MON-guh, MAIN-guh, MON-juh... etc. I want to know, once and for all, what is the correct pronunciation. I've read from different message boards that there really isn't a standard pronunciation for it. Is that true? :?:

It's Monh-guh, right? My little borther has a friend who says "I don't know what this 'monh-ga'. I do know what MAIN-GA is! Eveyone I know says it main-ga!"

responding to mangafanatic:
he's wrong-ga (as shoor so tactfully put it) it's mong-ga (or monh-ga if you please) .

Man-ga. Say "Jammin', mon!" in a Jamaican accent, and you've basically got the "man" part of manga.

I basically obey the general pronunciation of the Japanese used to write manga, and I get a tad irritated at people who tell me I should say it "main-ga" but to each their own, I guess.

Actually in Japanese, it's a 3 syllable word: ma-n-ga, so drag out the "n" a little. I would't quite say it was a rhyme with "songa" because the JP "a" is a little flatter

Never heard anyone try to say "Main-ga", most over emphasize the G, making it MANG-GA

I say Main-ga, and I don't care if it's wrong. I know how it's "supposed" to be, but I really don't like saying that at all; just too awkward. Plus, I can always blame it on my supposedly backwards, hickish Texan ways.

After all, scores died at the Alamo for my right to stretch out my vowels however I darn well please! And I'm sure somewhere, my history teacher just blew a gasket.

Unless I'm around Gypsy. Then it's usually "ma--onga"
*Gypsy smilies and pats Ash's conquered head*

When I walk into a book store, I never know which way I should pronounce it. If the clerk is ignorant, then I should pronounce it "Main-ga". That's what I usually say, no matter how much I hate the sound of it. But then there's always the occasional educated clerk who looks at me like I'm an idiot for saying it that way. Just can't win either way.

I usually just pronounce it in a similar fashion as "mango". (Hmm, a manga about mangoes... )

Though I try to pronounce it the correct way, I would really prefer if it was "maun-ga." My preferences have very little affect upon language, however. Generally I just shrug no matter how others pronounce it, though I'm not fond of "mang-ga."

Bwahahahahahahaaaa!

Personally I pronounce it like manga, as in like mango. But I suspect it should be pronounced in another way.

It's interesting you say that because until recently I was very confused as to the proper pronunciation of "mango."

I've always said it the right way. Mon-ga. C'MON PEOPLE! IT DOESN'T EVEN SPELL OUT MAIN-GA! Man-ga is understandable, but there's no "e" or "i" to make it sound like your oddball definition, MAIN-GA! OMG, that's just too weird.

 Worse to me than "main-ga": Japanese porno comics (as afforementioned), Sailor Moon (as a blanket statement), Pokemon (as a blanket statement), Japanimation, man-on-man action (*curls up into a ball and cires*)

Despite the fact that the word "anime" rolls off the tongue like honey / mustard / ketcup / your pick Japanimation sounds like one of those English words that should never have been created because it sounds like it was meant to offend. Its right up there with the word "Unputdownable" which I consider to be a personal low-point in the English language.

That's because very few people like it. It was popular in the 80s but, thank goodness, it has become less popular. Still some use it at anime conventions which is about as smart as whistling Yankee Doodle in an Atlanta bar during happy-hour (a paraphrasing of Terry Pratchett)

Do you want to know something really sad? I have always called it 'main-ga' and most of the people I know say it the same way, so I have 'corrected' some of my high school friends when they say 'monga'. I'm so ashamed. I don't know why- but 'monga' sounds so weird to me. I guess its just cause I first got into manga over the internet- and I assumed it was 'main-ga'. Now I can't get it out. I must try, though, for it is my duty to be the grammer and pronunciation queen!!! Sigh...
