Wonder about Christian music in Japan?

Postby Daiko-chan » Wed Dec 17, 2003 10:44 am

don't worry, they've got Stacie Orrico's music over there. ^_^

-this is old news anyhow
that Stacie is über popular over there
even to the point of going Platinum!!
(yes, she is that well-liked in Nihon)

and if you don't know:
Stacie Orrico is a girl who is currently in the "mainstream" music business
but she's only doing that so that she can get more people to listen to Christian music

she will be touring in Japan:
next year*linkie*
in various places

-Tokyo, Hiroshima, Osaka...

I hope that more Christian music will get over there
and with good results!!

Platinum in Japan, on the basis of her Japanese sales alone? If so, that's pretty impressive!

What I'm curious about is what churches tend to sing over there in Japan. (What few churches there are there.) Do they sing translated hymns from elsewhere (primarily the Anglosphere) or do they sing mostly Japanese-origin hymns, or do they sing what we would call 'contemporary praise' music (in Japanese, of course)?

I heard that there was a trend in Japan where popular singers sang Christian songs - I have a Nakashima Mika CD where she sings "Amazing Grace."

My parents said that they probably just like the tune, but don't really pay attention to the lyrics. But Christian missionaries used the Nihonjin's interest in those songs to explain the lyrics to them. -^_^-

Hey y'all,

I haven't yet been to Japan, but from what I hear, black gospel music is pretty popular out there, even among non-Christians. Concerning the churches and what they sing, it depends. If they are more traditional evangelical, mainly hymns. If you're talking nondenominational charismatic churches, there are Japanese praise and worship groups that do translations of Hillsongs, Integrity/Hosanna!, and there's also Japanese Vineyard worship music (I've got two Vineyard Japan cds and they rawk!). I think mainly through the charismatic and Pentecostal churches, and churches impacted by renewal, there's more contemporary worship music coming forth. I had a Japanese roommate my first semester of Bible college earlier this year, so I got to listen to quite a bit of Japanese contemporary praise and worship music.
Peace,

Jose

Vineyard Japan?!

I MUST hear this! I would love to stuff that kind of thing in the ears of people who think that all Japanese music is secular. Believe me, I know some of these people.
