Tired of Emo and emowannabes

Does anyone here have recommendations for rock music that isn't emo or just drenched in secularity? I'm looking for something new, different, maybe indie or something underground. I would like to try some new stuff like fantasy metal, hardcore christian rock (like blind guardian), any new classical composers, popera, etc. Just about anything other than country, rap, folk, boy bands, actual satanic music, and filk. Thanx

When you say new, how new do you mean?

Hardcore Christian rock? hmm..guess I cant really help in that area, I dont listen to that hard of rock, unless you consider 12 stones and P.O.D hardcore.

Hmm, perhaps you should give Saviour Machine a shot, his holding a lot of the influences you like in his music with a gothic-metal style, a definite classical influence, and something of an opera vocal. If you are looking for new sounds, you may want to make a habit of camping out at http://www.christianindustrial.net and giving a listen to some industrial, industrial rock, goth, electro-goth (no, gothic music isn't so much like Manson and Nu-Metal as it is groups like The Sisters of Mercy or the Bauhaus with it's characteristic subdued but ethreal and haunting vocal), and maybe a little synthpop a try. I tend to be fond of Audio Paradox, Circle of Dust, Regenerator, Fearful Symmetry, The Awakening, and Saviour Machine myself, and would recommend requests of these to be played, while you just might like groups like Skillet or Rackets and Drapes. Assuming you like anything you hear and wish to pick up a CD, you just might find it for purchase at http://www.antiphonic.com , as a lot of this stuff tends to be relatively underground.

I agree with all three of those. Showbread especially. Showbread makes their own brand of rock which they have labelled "raw" and it's some good stuff. Catchy hooks, throat ripping screaming, synthesizers, and a...megaphone...are all involved. I HIGHLY recommend some Showbread.

btw, does anyone know of some bands or singers that have songs that are funny?

I recommend Electric Eel Shock's first album, called 'Go (insert country here)!' (They released Go America!, Go USA!, Go Europe!, and Go Japan!; the best of which is Go Europe!). Their songs are pretty funny and they're relatively clean (they say one thing I don't agree with, but it's not a swear word), not to mention they're kind of aggressive, with rock/punk mixed sound with metal influences. They are a J-rock band, although some of their songs are in English, and some have a Japanese/English mix. I can't say I recommend their second album, 'Beat Me', however, unless you don't mind the 'f-word.'

Nightwish is very fantasy metal. They're really big in europe. I'm not sure if they're christian... but they're extremely talented, with a beautiful female lead and good mix between fast paced stuff and slow, beautiful stuff. I like Nightwish!! Yay! :thumb: Very, very fantasy metal. With fantasy very much underlined.

HELLO SAVANNAH WHO POSTED ABOVE ME!! :jump:

1) Nightwish are awesome!
2) They are definatally NOT christian.
3) Their lead singer got fired recently (because she only cared about the money).

But yeah (check the lyrics first, 'I Wish I Had An Angels' a bit suspect and a few other songs). Ghost Love Score! One of the greatest songs ever!!

Could try some Japanese stuff too - I recommend the Mad Capsule Markets, they are explosively energetic. I could spend 10 minutes writing a synopsis of their sound (because theres so much in there)...but then again you could just listen to some of their stuff yourself (just don't download Jesus is Dead).

Some good Power metal bands IMO
  • Rhapsody
  • Thy Majestie (hard to find in America)
  • Within Temptation
  • Nightwish
  • Blind Guardian (new album due out this year  )
  • Saxon
  • Therion (but be advised they have some very unusual beliefs)
  • Anthony Arjen Lucassen has done some good projects too I think.

As for Christian music, I've been out of the scene for several years. "No Innocent Victim" is classified as punk but seems more like hardcore to my ears.

Whoa.

Tarja is left Nightwish?

That is rather sad news. I mean, to me, Tarja's voice was the driving force of the band. Maybe they can find a good replacement, but it seems bizaare to think of.

BTW, yes, Nightwish is a truy awesome band. Or they have been anyway. And I agree that "Ghost Love Score" is one of the best power metal songs ever released. A very moving and well crafted piece.

OMGOSH, come on man! Loveholic is my favorite Korean band ever. But I'm a girl, so it might be a little biased. Try that band. Also, people say The Trax is good, but it seems Korea is still in the boy band and R&B phase.

Also, try Of Montreal. :U Man...their lyrics are just weird. Not really secular, just random. :D They are probably one of my favorite bands. They sing about airplanes! ;1

Dude, Copeland is more emo than Weezer, and Weezer INVENTED emo.

Weezer??!!?! Are you serious?? I guess we've both experience different types of Emo, because I wouldn't dream of calling Weezer Emo, or Copeland for that matter.... Besides, it's not like I said "ohh have i got the perfuct thing for u. listen to copeland u will difentely love them i did!". It was just a suggestion.

I guess everyone defines their own style of Emo.

Hang on, now, cowboy, no reason to get upset. I'm just saying: Copeland is emo and he's trying to get away from emo.
