Air guitar.
Actually, despite the fact that I'm out of practice, I play (or at least try to play) the tenor saxophone. Certainly not as hardcore as the guitar, but still a fun instrument.

Saxophone is indeed a fun instrument and can actually be quite as hardcore when you begin to improvise solos.
I've been playing that for about ten years now and I never grow tired of playing with a band. Alto sax is my primary instrument, but I've also played Tenor and Baritone when the band calls for it.

I'm also learning how to play the bass guitar, on and off again.

Classical acoustic guitar, and electric.
I'm trying to learn to play Flamenco, but I can play a lot of 90s rock songs. Like Machinehead.

I can play the piano...like...one song...Silent Night. I learned it(SN) around 3rd grade and I stopped taking piano lessons at the end of fourth grade...so my skills at piano are basically being able to slowly figure out sheet music and do a really bad version of the songs, plus having Silent Night memorized.

piano/keyboard, flute, piccolo, a little guitar (learning that now)

I managed to get to grade 5 with the piano but I know what you mean about reading sheet music. If its easy sheet music I have a fair chance of not butchering the song too badly but if it gets too tough I can make Swan Lake sound like Mutated Zombie Chicken.
Are you enjoying learning the piano, Bard?
I'm learning the guitar too, Lynx! I did some school lessons last year (unfortunately I didn't realise it was CLASSICAL guitar instead of ordinary guitar lessons... I'm very happy to have learned how to appegiate, though!) and picked up whatever else I could. I'm still getting there.
Has anyone here taught themselves an instrument without or mostly without a teacher? How did you find it?

I can play a mean snootflute...And I mess around on the bass a bit. Honestly I really can't play instruments well at all. I can compose cool techno stuff with a computer but as far as actually being able to play intsrumants lets just say that I have no skill whatsoever.

I think I would mostly lost without a teacher...
I've been playing bass for about 1 year, 4 months. I was being taught by the guitarist of a band whose members go to my church... but I'm now just starting lessons with the bass player of the same band (incidentally, we are both Sam J and born in the same year...).

Actually, most of what I know on the guitar is self-taught. And pretty freaking good for self-taught, I might add.

I can play the piano. I quit taking lessons just a few months ago, because I realized I don't really have a talent or patience.. Although I am musical.

I tried to teach myself to play guitar, but then I was tuning it and my strings broke and I NEVER EVER bought new ones.

Nooo! I did the same thing myself (and it was the third+ time I'd put on my own strings, too) so don't let it put you off. Its so much fun to teach yourself - you can get pretty much any info and lessons you need online. Plus, if where you are is anything like New Zealand, strings aren't too expensive either and the money is a good investment into having some real fun with a guitar. I mean, I'm not a fantastic player by a long shot but its the fun I have that is important. So if you reckon you'll have fun and you like the guitar -- go for it! [/RANT]

Awesome! How did you teach yourself? Through watching others, books, nutting it out or online? (I'm asking both because I'm interested and because if you've found anything useful I'm hoping I could see if it helps my own playing too).

o_O What an odd coincidence... Its cool that you were able to learn from people in your Church's band.

What is a snootflute? Heheh you're probably better on your bass than I am on the guitar.
...but I will manage to console myself about my limited ability with the fact that its the fun that counts...

No CA, actually I'm sure that you're better than I am on the guitar...I can't actually play anything good for the life of me. Of course I haven't practiced in months. Anyway a snootflute is a musical device that you play with your nose while you hum the tune and it makes this whistling noise. It's also called the Nose Harp.

Last instruments I ever knew how to play was a recorder in gr. 1 and then a ukelele in gr. 3 :/ ...that's what happens when you pick art & drama in gr. 7 as your elective instead of band :/ (We had a choice of one or the other, unlike most other schools).

Do you seriously play the snootflute, TD? 'cuz that's kind of gross and cool at the same time.
