Idea for a CAA Recipe Book

PostPosted: Thu Jul 01, 2004 1:07 pm

I was thinking that we could have a CAA recipe thread where members post recipes of their favorite meals/snacks or recipes of things members have created themselves. I think it'll be interesting what we can come up with. Is anyone else in on this? :pinned:

Huh. Well, feel free to grab anything you want off FODDER (my online recipe database). In fact, you could post any recipe you want into it to. It's at:
http://flactem.com/cgi-bin/db_recipe.cgi

So I guess you could use that as a 'cookbook' tool if you want. Just don't enter any weird stuff in there, ok?

If you want a sample, here's one. It's the "high octain salsa" recipie. This is more or less what it looks like when it comes out of the "print friendly" version.

OldPhilosopher's High Octane Salsa:

Ingredients:
1 small yellow onion
1 dozen red jalapeños (cored)
1 bunch cilantro (no stems)
1 clove garlic
1 small lime
5 large tomatoes (firm)
1 bunch scallions (green onions)
2 Tbsp celery salt
½ tsp dill weed
1 Tbsp oregano

Instructions:
1. coarsely chop onion, peppers and scallions
2. finely chop garlic
3. place in food processor, high setting. chop in cilantro
remove to large (2+ liter) container
4. dice tomatoes. in blender, blend 2 tomatoes and juice from lime. remove to container. repeat for additional tomatoes
5. add salt and spices
mix thoroughly. add salt to taste

Notes:
you can vary the quantities of peppers/tomatoes to increase/decrease the 'temperature' of the salsa.

Why, of course. I cook for myself all the time

Thank you oldphilosopher, but, because of posts such as the following:

...it may be safer to post here (that's funny Volt)

So, uh, I guess we can use this same thread (which was really started to get approval but anyway):

English Muffin Pizzas

What you need:

English Muffin
Ragu Pizza Sauce
Mozzerella Cheese
Other toppings (sliced mushrooms, olives, pepperoni, etc.)

What to do:

1. Preheat oven to 350
2. Cut English Muffin in half
3. Put about 2 teaspoons of sauce on each half
4. Sprinkle how ever much cheese you want (not too much!)
5. Cook in oven for about 10 minutes or until cheese is melted

*TIP: I find it easier for the toppings to actually stay on the pizza if you put the toppings on first and THEN the cheese.

Try it everyone! It's a really good and easy-to-make lunch

I have a recipe for some "no bake cookies" somewhere around here. They are chocolate, peanut butter, and oatmeal. If anyone is interested, maybe I could dig it up. Oh, crab cheese wontons w/ homemade sweet and sour sauce. They're both really easy and taste delicious. Check back for me to edit this post when I can find the recipes.

Shadsie's Spicy Stir-Fry

1 lb lean beef or chicken, cut into strips.
1 package frozen mixed Stir-Fry vegitables, or whatever fresh veggies you have in the refrigerator (carrots, bell peppers, onions, brocolli, mushrooms, bean sprouts, cabbage - the kinds of things you find in stir fry)
1 pinch ginger (I never measure)
1 pinch black pepper
2-4 pinches or tsps of sesame seeds
1-2 pinches crushed red pepper flakes, or to taste
2-3 tsps. minced garlic
2 tblspoons cooking oil (preferably olive oil)
Soy sauce to taste

Defrost and cut up meat. Put in bowl with a few dashes of soy sauce, black pepper, sesame seeds and ginger.
Open package of frozen vegitables (or, if fresh, cut up ahead of time and put in bowl seperate from meat with clean hands)
Put oil in skillet. Turn heat on high. Put in garlic and chili flakes. Allow to just start sizzling.
Put in meat. Brown meat, cooking it through.
Put in vegitables. Dash some more soy sauce on mixture. Stir. Cover for a couple of minutes, just to let vegitables thaw and cook.
Stir-fry uncovered until veggies are cooked to taste. Turn off heat.
Serves 2-4, or one person for 2-3 meals. Great over drained ramen noodles.

Hmm... I have some no-bake cookies here too. Let us know when you find that recipe. As for the iced tea recipe, one of my friends already posted his recipe for "Beef Maruchan Soup." :eyeroll: In fact, I think he's lurking around the board somewhere, now...

Ashley's Magnificent Queso Delight (just plain Queso sounded borning)

1/1 block Velveeta Cheese
1 microwaveable bowl, preferably glass
2 cans of Rotel diced tomatoes
1 bag (or more) of Tostitos chips
Cayenne sprinklings to taste
Jalapenos if desired

Slice the block of Velveeta into small cubes and place into dish. Open both cans of tomatoes and pour in on top. Place dish, without lid, into the microwave for 5 minutes on high. Take dish out and stir if possible. Continue placing dish in microwave on high in 5-6 minute intervals until all cheese has melted. Stir in between rounds. Sprinkle Cayenne pepper to taste, and add jalapenos if desired. Enjoy at football parties all around Texas with this quick, tasty treat.

*taking notes*

Ohh...I can't check this thread too many times; I'm getting hungry for food I don't even have the ingridients to make! :bang: Someone's going grocery shopping VERY soon!

These sound delicious, keep 'em coming guys!

Oh yeah, have anyone ever tried Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny Popsicles / Flavored Ice Cubes? Just pour some kind of fruit juice in an ice tray (preferably one with large holes). Put a popsicle stick (cut in half) in each hole and throw it in the freezer. Freeze without the popsicle stick for some better-than-plain ice cubes.

Okay I admit, that's not exactly genius... :eyebrow:

Zilch's Far East Applesauce(slight possiblity of ossification if left out too long)

Ingredients:

1/4 Ramen noodle packet
Applesauce(Cinnimon would work best)

Pour dry ramen into applesauce. Eat. Feed ramen seasoning packet to nearest pet.

You can also make 'em with bagels or pitas :thumb:

And in other news; Zilch, I fear for you once you move out and have to cook for yourself :eh:

Wow. That was very mature. Keep up posting things like this and you'll find yourself with:
3: quick and easy strikes
1: less forum to troll on
lots: more time on your hands

I don't find this funny. Strike one. If you haven't yet read our FAQ, I strongly suggest you do.

Aw, I thought Chazz's post was funny - maybe a bit too mean-spirited, but... I don't mind being called a nerd.

But, yeah... people here do have real recipies... I make my stir fry all the time. It's sort of Japanese, I guess. It's oriental, anyway.

Here's my recipe for Easy Miso Soup

1 packet dry Miso Soup Mix
1/2 cup water.

Pour dry soup mix in bowl. Microwave water in seperate cup or bowl until hot. Pour over soup. Stir. Enjoy.

*Drools at Ashley's queso-dip* I make that too, but with mine, it's Velveeta and salsa - usually Pace picante. I ought to try it with the Ro-Tel tomatoes. That would probably be really good, especially with fresh jalepenos from my brother's backyard garden... mmmm.

More southwest (ok, technically I live in southeast Texas but that works) favorites! My brother made this recipe last night and it was delicious.

Chilli Con Nachos

1 8 oz (it might be closer to 10--the medium sized can) of Wolf Brand Chilli
1 can Taco Bell Refried Beans
1 bag Tostitos
1-2 cups finely shredded cheddar cheese (as much or as little as you like)
Sour Cream to taste

Heat up chilli on a stove top--basically you just open the can, place it in a pot and stir over a good flame til warm, liquid, and bubbling. Turn down heat to low. In a seperate pan, also heat up refried beans. Arrange chips on a microwavable plate, then spread beans on top. Make another layer with the chilli. Top with a hearty sprinkling of cheese and place in the microwave for 10-20 seconds, depending on how you normally make nachos. Remove plate from microwave carefully and top with sour cream.

Does anyone have a recipe for SCONES?

I would really appreciate it if someone had a recipe for scones to share. I tried my hand at it before but it didn't turn out the way I expected (I'm guessing I didn't have enough sugar :eyebrow: )

These recipes sound very delicious (well except for that applesauce, no offense Zilch) We should have an online picnic (of course that'll be over at Goof Off I assume  )

Mud Pies

A gallon bucket of fresh mud (preferably from nearest river)
A bucket of water
Mix together and shape into pie looking pieces of mud

Yummm....mud pies  I used to "cook" those all the time when I was smaller. They tasted so much better then than they do now :stressed: (j/k of course)

Umm...okay I was searching in the kitchen one day and I gathered some ingredients to make this:

Griff's I'm-hungry-and-there's-nothing-else-to-cook Cheese and Salsa Quesadillas

What you need:
  • shredded cheddar and mozzerella cheese
  • Diced tomatoes
  • salsa
  • onions
  • two tortillas about 8 inches wide

What you do:
  • lay one tortilla flat on a piece of aluminum foil
  • spread the diced tomato, onions, and salsa onto the tortilla
  • sprinkle the cheeses on the mixture
  • lay the second tortilla on top and press down lightly
  • place quesadilla on the lowest rack in the oven and bake at a temperature of 350 degrees for about 10 minutes
  • let the quesadilla cool for a few and cut into quarters

If I had some I would have included grilled chicken breast strips in that. My quesadilla was still kinda flimsy so you may have to adjust the cooking temp/time. But it was delicious anyway ;)

This is a casserole that my mom makes. It's good.

Chicken Cheese Broccoli Casserole That Has A Funky Name But I Can't Spell It and I Am Not Going To Even Try

Four skinless boneless chicken breasts
1 can Cream of Mushroom soup
1 cup mayonnaise
1 cup chopped broccoli
1 tbsp. lemon juice
1/2 teaspoon curry powder
2 cups cheddar cheese
Salt and pepper to taste

First, boil the chicken until it's fully cooked (it will be white in the middle). Preheat your oven to 350. Chop the chicken into small, bite-sized chunks. In a baking dish, mix the chicken, mayo, soup, lemon juice, curry powder, and salt and pepper. Top with cheddar cheese. Bake for 30 minutes or until golden brown.

When I serve it, I like to serve rice on the side and some good dinner rolls or something. I'll post my recipe for chicken parmigiana later, but it's quite involved.
