CAA's first live bible study
PostPosted: Tue Jun 22, 2004 6:48 pm

Everything is finalized for the first live bible study to be conducted on CAA. We will be studying through the book of Romans, in four weeks time. The study will be conducted through CAA's chat client (click "chat" from the homepage to enter), so if you aren't familiar with how it works yet, please try to get a handle on it before we start the study on Monday, June 28th.
The study will take place from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM ET and I would like everyone to read before the study so that you will all have something to contribute. If you just want to spectate, that's cool too, but I'd prefer it if it was a little more interactive.
Here are the dates, times, and readings for the study:
6/28/04, 6:00-7:00 PM ET, Romans Chs. 1-4
EDIT: Postponed the study for 7/5/04 to 7/12/04
7/13/04, 6:00-7:00 PM ET, Romans Chs. 5-8
Edit: Missed the week of the 20th.
7/27/04, 6:00-7:00 PM ET, Romans Chs. 9-12
8/03/04, 6:00-7:00 PM ET, Romans Chs. 13-16
Also, if you have a question about anything contained in a given week's worth of scripture (e.g. Romans 1-4) then feel free to PM me your question so that you can at least participate in that regard, whether or not you can actually make it to the study. During the study, should we have time, we will try to wrestle with some of these questions, and come to some sort of concensus.
Regardless of the opinions that are shared during the study, I would like to emphasize that an attitude of respect and kindness is the only attitude that will be tolerated. Also, the study will be recorded, and a transcript will be available for all of those that miss out. So be on your best behavior.
If you guys have any questions about the chat client or the study, feel free to post them here. If you have any questions on this week's (or any week's) reading, then please PM them to me.

okay lets see if I have it all
6:15-7:15 ET is 5:15-6:15 CT
Not sure how to work the chat client, but I'll figure that out.
I cannot be here for the first one, but I will aim for the 2nd is that okay?
I like the thought of adding questions. Might try and do that for the first week.
Question One: Does it matter which version of the bible we use?

Yep, it's fine if you can't make one (or a few). Just come to the ones you can, and at least follow along in the reading. You can read the transcript of the first one after the fact, and if you hurry submitting a question (on Romans 1-4), maybe you'll even see it asked during the study. Thanks Xavier, see you round bro.

Please remember that the Chat client is *not* the only way of using the chat interface. A few people have complained it didn't work for them (please, let me know about this -- I can't fix it unless people tell me about problems, and I'm fully aware there are some browsers that may not run the Java applet properly).
You can always use good old fashioned Telnet, which a lot of people are using, to
telnet mud.floodgap.com 6785
If you look on the main chat page,
http://mud.floodgap.com/chat/
there's a link to a great selection of Telnet clients you can use for Windows 95/98/ME/XP, as well as Mac OS classic and OS X, and even Unix, right here:
http://mud.floodgap.com/chat/clients.html
Plus, I'm working on adding MOOzilla compatibility (see
http://www.moo.ca/moozilla/
), so this will make it even more colourful and interactive. Please, my E-mail address is listed right on the page, and you can always PM me. I can't fix problems if people don't inform me of them, and your comments do count.
I'm planning to give Saint Kevin as much support as I can with this, including an on-line Bible with two translations built right into the chat MUD, and the ability to record and post studies to the web. With luck, this will turn out very well.

This should be interesting. I will plan to participate.
For simplest referance: ET is GMT - 7, correct?

...so it'll be starting at 5:15 Central.
I'm gonna do my best to be there.

No, GMT - 7 is my time zone, Mountain Time. GMT -5 is ET.
Also, I've decided (by popular demand - pretty much everyone) to do the bible study through AIM instead of the CAA chat client. Apparently the CAA chat client is a bit intimidating for you all. I do believe though that I would have gotten through a lot more if I could quote the verses using the BBE bibles embedded in the CAA chat zone, rather than having to cut and paste them into an AIM box that has severely restrictive character limits.
Also, to Shooraijin, if you're out there, I found some other bible translations you can use for the chat client (like the RSV and NASV for example). I guess that might be pretty irrelevant though, since no one seems to use the client anyway.

If people have specific things they want added or changed, *please* contact me. I've received very, very few messages about it.

...that eliminates my chances of participating. At least now I know.

The study scheduled for July 5th is postponed until July 12th. Sorry for any inconvenience.
Also I wanted to let you all know that the times for the study have been changed from 6:15 PM ET - 7:15 PM ET to 6:00 - 7:00 PM ET.

I'm sorry about that UC. I'm generally a night owl, so perhaps when school starts up again in the fall I could possibly do a study later in the evening. Just out of curiosity UC, what times WOULD you be able to make it? Maybe if it doesn't inconvenience anyone currently participating, I could change the time of the study. More than likely this will not happen, but at least knowing when you could make it could affect the times I host any studies in the future.
Also, I have plans to edit and then post transcripts of my studies here on CAA. If that is too much trouble for the mods, perhaps I will only place links on CAA to my studies to be hosted off-site. But regardless of what form it may take, I do plan on posting my study on Romans at some point. At least then you'll be able to comment on it, and participate in some form, even if you couldn't participate live.

wait...July 12th is TODAY!!! aww man, why'd you have to pick this week Kevin!!! i can't go onto only messenger stuff until Friday!!! i am forbidden from using any of them. V_V hee, but i'm being rebellious lately, and i stay up until the wee hours of the morning [about 3 in the morning] posting in CAA, and then I go to sleep, and wake up at about 5 in the morning. ^_^ i take naps every now and then. tell me how the study goes...i wish i could attend it...

The issue was not the time, but rather the client being used. I do not have this client, I am unlikely to download a chat client and cannot buy one. I am committed enough to the idea of a CAA Bible study that I could make it in almost any given time. However, I would suggest posting GMT, so that all of us can modify accordingly.

This study is starting to have more schedule change's than NBC's fall line-up. It's now PERMANENTLY changed to tuesdays. If that inconveniences anyone, I'm sorry, but this IS the best time for me to do it.
To UC, AIM isn't tough to download, but the people used to using AIM are quite frankly intimidated by the CAA chat client. I tried initially to do the first study on it, but there was pretty much a unanimous vote to do it on AIM. Unless I can persuade them otherwise, it won't be changing. Sorry bro. And I will change it to GMT as you suggested - later.

Just IM me on AIM sometime and I'll give it to you swordguy.
By the way everyone, I'm going to have to, unfortunately, postpone tomorrow's study. It's not every day that my dad gets to take a vacation from work, so I need to take this while I have it guys. I'll see you guys next week. Take care.

I have AIM at this point. Not that I will have much chance of using it, as it is on only one terminal. But if you could give me the new time of the next study in Central or GMT, I could make a sincere effort to participate. Also, I would appreciate information regarding anything from prior studies that would effect the newer one.
Also, how is the chat connection set up via AIM?

Perhaps this discussion would be better suited to a new thread (with Saint Kevin's permission) given that this is no longer about the first bible study...

Perhaps James then, same bat time, same bat channel. Starting next tuesday. Since it's so short, I can only see it taking 2, maybe 3 weeks to complete. I'll think about it.
Also, the lasyt study on Romans (Chapters 13-16) is today...in... about 10 minutes. So if you've got AIM and want to participate, why don't yoiu log on and add KKulpa333 (that's me) to your buddy list and senf me an IM. Then I'll be sure to invite you in.
