Do you/did you ever smoke?

This poll includes both legal and illegal drugs [of your country].

I never had, but I always find it interesting to find people stumbling over their toes trying to prove that smoking is Biblically wrong.

Its not a tough issue. God said our bodies are the Temple. Thus, if you give yourself lung cancer you are destroying the temple. Same as someone who gorged on foods that were bad for them. The Bible is clear on what God thinks of people who destroy the temple.

I took a puff when I was 6 years old after my Irish neighbour put down her half-smoked cigarette into the ash tray to chase after her little son. First and last time I'll ever do that.

Once upon a time i used to... I was actually somewhat of a bad kid. I didn't get into trouble or anything, but i was into some bad things with some of the wrong people. Let's just say that i used to smoke more than just cigarettes.

Now, I don't do any of that stuff anymore and I'm trying to stay on the track and live according to the vocation that God has given me.

Well, I'm the oldest member in my family that has never smoked and I plan to keep it that way.

Actually, I did smoke a Cuban cigar once. Dad told me that the particular kind of cigar I puffed was the finest cigar in the world....

.... and it smelled and tasted like [REDACTED].

If that was the finest variety of smokable materiel ever crafted by man, I sincerely doubt I'd make a habit out of smoking.

Never had. Don't think I ever will. Life's short enough without me smoking it away.

No, and as long as I have my sanity, probably will never, if not only for the reason of my asthma.

yes, I have been a smoker before, and here's a bit of advice. never start. long term dangers are only part of it - you'll get all kinds of short-term health problems too. just a small sample of the evils - you'll wake up every morning feeling sick, you'll be out of breath a lot easier, your fingers will be stained...

its also one of the most addictive substances around - comparable to heroin or coke.

really not worth it guys!

I never will for obvious reasons. (like it KILLING people and me having to buy more cigarettes all the time if I got addicted, and having to go outside on cold winter nights to do it.. blech)

My dad used to be a serious smoker, but then he quit (partly because he didnt want us kids getting into it). He still has a cigar on occasion out on the back porch though. Whats fun for me is running over the cigars he throws out with the lawn mower!

Well, like most of the people have already said, I've never smoked before simply because its stupid to hurt yourself, when you have no reason to start n the first place. With drugs like cocain and heroin you can end of be so completely addicted that you simply cannot live without it. What's the point? Who would want to make themselves go threw that?

And I think one thing that has probably helped alot of the people on this thread is having friendship with people who don't smoke, so you don't have to worry about being pressured into it. ^_~

heh my dads still smokes and whenever he tries to quit evry1 suffers cuz he gets so darn cranky i say lock him in a room for 3 years without a cigerat :) but hey thats me anyway i think i take after my mom to much and would gag and throw up at the first puff...but yeah i am the 'bad boy' of the hous but im a wimpy bad boy at that so i basicly just dont listen much to my parents (matter of habit  ) anyway yeah

I don't smoke and never will. I consider smoking to be disgusting and stupid, not just for medical reasons but also for the reasons that Shatterheart and everyone else have listed.

Nope, I've never smoked; and I never will. In fact, I think I'm actually allergic to cigarette smoke.

Good to hear people are getting smarter. I started smoking in high school and didn't quit for eight years. It's a scary combination of physical and mental addiction, after you quit, you notice all the times you want a cigarette just because you are so used to having one (after eating, in the car, in the morning etc.) Smokers don't notice how bad it reeks unless they quit, and even then it takes a while.

but this is assuming you´re bound to get cancer if you smoke once. I´ve never smoked, and I don´t intend to. I realize that cigarettes are addictive, so I obviously recommend against starting. but I know many people who have smoked once or twice and stopped after that. they´re not going to get lung cancer. same goes for occasional pot smokers.

I´m also a little unsure of your logic. are you saying that we shouldn´t do anything that could be potentially life-threatening?

I´m not trying to just challenge your opinion; I want to agree with you, but these are my doubts.

nope and never.

I have asthma as well so smoking will kill me basically (or somehting like that). Plus it smells bad. I can hardly breathe and on several times I've fainted cause someone was smoking.

I have never smoked.
And I am happy to say that todays youth has the smallest percnetage of people who have, in the last 10 years.

Maybe the thousands of adds on TV, numerious warning in schools, family, and on the package its self are actualy starting to work...

I'm sure Shatterheart will add to this, but for me that verse has always meant don't do things you know would hurt you/destroy your body. As for potential dangers, well that's unreasonable. Heck, walking could kill you, so could breathing or eating or any number of things we HAVE to do to live. So that's not the logic at all. The way I always saw it was that if your body is a temple, it means it is somewhat holy, and you can't just do whatever you want to it. Drugs and cigarettes will indeed harm you, even if you don't get lung cancer they will do other things to your body, like stain your teeth or coat your lungs in tar, and that's "destroying the temple".

Now that I live for Christ, I have to consider what others will see as my representation of Christ (as well as the stumbling block verse), as well as what honors Him. If I feel He has called me not to smoke, drink, or whatever, then the nitty gritty details don't matter to me. I could also get into smoking becoming an addiction, how drugs are escaping the problem rather than going to God and asking Him to help see you through the tough times, and how we were made in the image of God, but that's a different discussion. Does this answer your doubts?

i did once...it was okay but i don't see the big appeal...i mean, it's really not that exciting....and the consequences are horrible for your body and just plain gross....and i do think it's wrong to do anything that descrates the temple of your body

To add to what Ashley said, even if it never hurt you at all, having any sort of addiction is wrong because you're letting something besides God run your life. Any sort of addiction, even an addiction to umm.... grapes, can hurt you somehow, but it might not always be physical. Just my two cents.

Never plan to smoke or ever try it. One cigarette would probably just lead to another one soo... yep. I am sorta worried about pressure about it since I'm going into high school though. Christian schools can be just as bad about peer pressure if not worse -_-; (What's really funny is how we find little things, like someone's skirt being too long or too short, to comment/gossip about, even with our uniforms)

Never smoked, likely never will for the reasons stated by shatterheart and ashley as well as the fact that cigarettes can get extremely costly and it would be poor stewardship of my money to blow it on things that desecrate my body. I would add that it would be illegal which is disobeying the authority God puts over us but as of yeasterday it isn't for me...
