We just dicovered that one of our fish in our comunnity is expecting

I bought a pair of Kribensis like a month ago and we foudn out they were male and female. Sure enough today, I couldn't find the female. yesterday we got a catfish that eats smaller fish so I htought maybe it got ate even though this fish isnt that small. Well later on looking in the tank, I found her hidin ginside a plant.

I was happy but worried she was sick. Though the male kind ahung aorund with her, almost like protecting her. Well I looke din our handy dandy Aquarium Fish book and dsicovered that when a female is gonna give birth to fry. I found out that the pelvic fin becomes chacoal black, while normally it's flourescent blue.

We were ecstatic to say the least. We never meant to breed fishes so we don't really know what to do but it's fun. Personally threse fish are my favorite in the tank (i got them myself) so I feel like a father ::sniff::

heres some pictures of the fish (not in our tank though):

Baby fishes! Yay! ^^
*hugs little fishies*
I've only had two pet fishes in my lifetime...I won a goldfish at the fair when I was five or so, and I took it home and named it Jason...we bought a net and a fish bowl for him (that is, if it really was a him) and kept him for a long time...then, on a Sunday morning...or maybe it was a Saturday...:P
He died, anyway, and I buried him in the backyard. He made good fertilizer. ^^
Then, I was so upset that my parents (they were *overjoyed* at the prospect of adding a fish into the mix) bought me a new fish, a beta fish.
He was really cute and colorful...he had a black body, and a beautiful tail that looked like a banner fluttering in the wind...red, blue, and purple. All my favorite colors. I really don't know what I was thinking when I named him...but I called him Tornadotop. During his short and boring lifetime he had survived a few frightening experiences, such as bouncing off of the countertop, and onto the kitchen floor...that was about the only interesting thing I can remember. Hey, you've got to give it to him...he was really pretty. *is pretty the right word? Maybe I should say "handsome"...heck, he was a fish...now he's compost...what does it matter?*
Anyway, he died too, and then my dog died, and then I got a vicious puppy, and now I have a tortoise...
(*chants* I will hug you, and squeeze you...)
And that's my history as a pet owner. As almost every pet up to date is dead, I think my tortoise will be the last. ^^

oh oh, fishes!!!

I must share the joy even though I have no pics.

As a kid, I used to breed fishes too...mostly cichlids since those breeds are hardy (tougher and survive better in most conditions) and more common in my country.

I bred angel fishes, a zebra type and another white type..forgot the species names (sorry, haha). Our fishes live in a community of about 20 fishes and there came a time when our fishes started to pair off. Well, my dad and I spent time separating the expecting parents to another aquarium but it eventually became too tedious when we had too many expecting parents!!

So we made a decision: We removed the eggs from the community and took care of them separately. We waited for the eggs to hatch and fed the tiny hatchlings eggyolk first and then later moved on to brine shrimp as the babies got bigger. Eventually, they got big enough to eat fish food and we released them back into the community. And the fishes lived happily ever after.

Well, not really, all of my fishes died of old age (~ 6 years) just like the books said.

I loved breeding fishes...the babies are so cute!! ^_^ We almost bred discus fishes but that was very tricky since the fishes are more sensitive and won't breed if they weren't given 100% privacy (you know, something like pandas refusing to mate in captivity o.0 ). Also, discus fishes also "milk" their babies, which made things all the more complicated..

Erm...I guess I rambled on too much but congrats, Hitokiri and I wish the expecting parents the best! ^_^

Oh yeah, I have 2 tortoises called James Bond and Reggie. Still well, alive and happily snapping at ppl's fingers. XD I love them eventhough I haven't seen them for a long time (back home in Malaysia).

I won a fish at a carnival about 8 years ago. I called him "Orca" (after killer whale--that was my favorite animal back then). He was a little common orange goldfish. I had gotten a white fish called "Tuna" about a year before then.

Tuna died a few months ago. :waah!:

And guess what? Orca's still alive.

Here's a hint, if you want a fish to live a long time, feed them the reptile pellets that you feed aquatic frogs and fish. That's what I've been doing, but Orca's living with my grandmother now. She still feeds him the pellets. He knows tricks too.

Baby fishies are so neat! We used to have guppies and there was babies galore. ^_^ (Get two guppies, and you'll have a tankful in no time without even trying.) Then we got two other fish, and they went cannibal and ate all the guppies. *shakes head* Stupid cannibal fish. Then I won two goldfish at the carnival, and they whipped them into shape. ^_^ One of my goldfish had black on it, and it looked like it had a mustache like Hitler's, so he is no named Hitler Fish. He's the only fish with a name. ^_^ I won two more goldfish at another carnival. I love the fish game.
