k my best friend is geting married this summer and i thought it would be a great idea for a weeding present to make a bust out of thie rheads (him and his fiancee). A head sclupture. It was to be one of my projects for my Advanced Ceramics class. So this thing took me 2 months to do, the neitr 45 minute class period.
Well...my teacher fired it friday over the weekend and I went to pick it up today and... well the 2 head exploded.
I looked at the exploded head and found out why it did. You have to hollow the culpture out. Well I did but I didn't hallow enough in the front of the face. If you have to much thickness in the clay, it will explode while bieng fired so....all that time, sweat, and effort put into it was wasted cause I was in a hurry to finish it cause I have 5 other projects due and it was getting to 2 weeks left of school.
Although before it broke up I took a picture of it for my portfolio (a powerpoint presenation of all my projects I did this year).
Sigh....oh well..I might due it again in my spare time.

I’ve always been extremely lucky when it comes to clay work and ceramics. Which is good because if your work explodes in our kiln, you've gotta clean it out yourself. I helped someone do it before, takes forever.

Its so frustrating to loose all that hard work!!! I know how you feal. I have never had a peice explode, but I did have a big chunk of a bowl blow off by some one elses explosion.
My Bowl wasnt as an important project as your wedding present, but was still hours of work destroyed....
Can we see the pic you took before hand?

its in a c.d. and I dont know if I can get it out of it cause its in the powerpoint but I can see what I can do.
To be perfectly honest, it's not even close to my best work. I had to hurry on it cause I was losing time fast as I said before so it doesn't look nearly as good if I had spent alot of time on it and I took bout 3-4 months working on it.
I liked it and disliked it.

It exploded?! *laughs head off, then thinks of how horrible she's being, considering the circumstances*
Wow. That's terrible! I hope that you can make another one in time for the wedding...

How heartbreaking! That's why I'm afraid of ceramics... I'm stickin' with polymer clay (Sculpey). It never explodes, and you don't need a kiln.

It took me 2 motnhs to make and the wedding is like in a month. Though I could but I need to collect materials and get ample amoutn of clay to make it. Plus all the glazes...
I was kind asurprised it blew up. I've taken sculpte 2 years now and none of my htings ever blew up until now. Strange.
HOWEVER!!! MY Sake set is alright! Very pretty! It has cherry-blossum trees and on the sake jug, it has "sake" in kanji.
