Life is Whacked

Time for mindless, senseless rambling by a frustrated, Coby-chan who can’t think straight today… call me a whiner. Say I’m a baby. I don’t friggin care. Everyone hates me anyway…
I just don’t understand it.
Offline I have very few ‘real’ friends (as in friends that don’t talk about me behind my back, tell lies about me to make people hate me and/on put me down). And the ones that I do have, I only get to see a few times a year, if that.
So, anycrap, most of my friends I can really talk to about stuff are online. Oh, its all just fine and dandy except for the fact that my dad thinks I spend way too much time on the computer and he said he might stop paying for internet connection. So now we have this super cheesy one that logs itself off literally every 5 minutes. I’m not exaggerating! Ask the people I IM with! This is crap…
HE DOESN’T UNDERSTAND! These are the only people I can talk to if I have a problem. These are the only people who can truly love me for who I am. These are the only people who I know that I can rely on to not pretend to be my friend one minute and stab me in the back the next.
… my life is just… screwed.

Cob-ster, I am so sorry! I understand just what you mean. You know what, though? I love ya, girl. You have to be one of the nicest people in the history of mankind and I'm not just saying that. Don't let these things get you down because that's just doing what the Weasel wants. These things happen for a reason but I know God's gonna bless you so much just for hanging in there. Keep your chin up!
(And if it makes you feel any better, my mom has threatened to take my computer away at least 6 times in the last 2 days.)

Frustrating... I'm sorry to hear about this...
I remember when my parent would threaten to pull my Internet access.... I had to do a lot of negotiating... a lot.... nowadays they've been off my back, because I've been very productive and not lazy. That’s a funny story..
Now, my problem is my cable modem with a mind of it's own and those jerks at Charter Communications.... that
I have to deal with....
I hope you can get this straiten out.... somehow....
Anyways, your a cool personality to have here at the forums and we're all here for ya'! God Bless!

Heya Cobalt - I have an idea that may help with the current parental situation.
Mayhap you should show your parents the things you have been doing on the computer. Fanfics you've written, pictures you've drawn, et cetera. If they believe you are doing more than merely chatting through instant messangers they may back off a bit. I remembered when my parents would chide me about spending loads of time online. What was I doing? I was writing Wheel of Time fanfiction. I told them what I was doing with my time - that it was constructive, entertaining, and helping my writing abilities. They quickly backed down.
Just a thought! Please buck up! We're all here for ya!

Been there, tried that. Doesn't work. My dad won't listen. Not to one word I say. And he says I can still write r draw even if I don't have internet. Not like he likes my works anyway. He hangs up my brothers drawing all over the walls and throw mine away.

Hey Coby,
You know, I had some rather similar curcuimstances a while ago. I'm really close to my cousin who lives something like five hundred miles away. My dad was really upset at how long I spent online. One day, I sat down and explained what I was doing online-- just talking to my cousin. He allowed me to have more time after that.
Mind you, I didn't get all the time I wanted, just more. If you have talked to your dad already, try going to him again and explain the way you're feeling right now. This might not make a difference, then again-- it could.
In the end, just remember there may be bigger reasons why your dad wants you off line. I think alot of parent, mine as much as anyone else's parents, limit their children's online time because they're afraid of what their children are doing with that time. I really do feel sorry for you, and I hope what I said didn't offend you. I just thought I'd give you a little thought to chew on. Spit it out if you like.

I can't say that I've ever had my parents tell me that I was spending too much time on the internet (although I'm sure that I do
).
I doubt that I could do anything to help, but if you want to talk or something, feel free.

Unfortunately they are your parents, and whether they are right or wrong, the Bible tells us to obey them. (Unless, of course, they are harming you).
]
Actually, the bible says 'honour thy mother and thy father' not do everything they tell you to.
There is a boy at the school I go to whos mom and dad got him into weed and cannabis. True story.
An even better example would be a woman at the church I go to whos mother prevented her from going to church when she was younger. She had to disobey her parents to obey God.
Do what your parents say? 95% of the time yes. Think about what they're saying to you first? Most certainly.
Remember parents aren't always right. (Although most of the time they are)
...but anyway, back to the real topic.
Your situation seems pretty bad at the mo Coby but I just want to let you know that you do have real friends on here and you always will and I'm sure God won't prevent you from talking to the people you feel at home with and I'm sure that your dad will come through for you. Chin up, one day you'll be able to look back at this moment and smile ^_^

Well lets not be over-dissing parents here... I mean, coby's brother is older than she is; maybe they'll put up her art on the wall when she has more experience! I hope so! You do have a point though, kaji, as does anyone who ever wrote a self-help book in the history of time, when you say that it is what you do with your situation that counts

Thank you everyone, for your tips and encouragement, just so you know, I'm reading them all. ^_^;;
JediSonic is right, however, only one of my two brothers is older.

Coby has two brothers, Jedisonic; one older brother and one younger brother. I don't know if she means just one of them or both of them, but just thought you'd like to know.
EDIT: Sorry, Coby, we posted at the same time.

Y'know the more I think about it, most of my best friends are on this site too! Its not so much a problem of 'betrayal', so much as it is of being homeschooled
Most of my 'real life' friends are ones that I met last year in 7th grade public school.

Your situation is annoying, but not grave. I remember my mom frequently telling me to "get out and get to know people!" Well guess what Mom--I'm too "different" to be accepted by any-which type of person or to get along with the mainstream! That's tough. But if you silence that voice within you that pushes you away from others because...
--they like music you hate
--they wear clothing that... uh, is just ugly
--they use foul language (not just four-letter words, but speech you would expect from a troglodyte or Thad the Brown Barbarian)
--their "culture" (this includes sub- and pop-culture) irritates/disgusts you
...then you can see what qualities they have beyond the external and appreciate them for that, while regarding their failings as mere trifles. You'd be surprised to see how deep and interesting a person is if you really "know" them. Of course, if even after you look past the external and see that the person is truly wretched, no use casting your pearls with them.
But I'm a really asocial person at heart, so my opinion might not matter to you.
As for your internet usage, your parents may have a point. The internet is a filter; for one thing, you can't even communicate with your friends in real time, not even with IM (differences in typing speed and IM lag factor into this). The internet provides an opportunity for a person to create an idealized version of his or her self; a persona often seems more interesting than the person. If you met your online friends in person, how would you react? How would you regard them if they don't live up to the image you conjured up in your mind of them, the image they created in a forum? And what if that person lied about his or her self all along? You can never know for sure what a person is like if you've only met him or her through the net. For all you know, I could be a 39-year-old hillbilly with a mullet and a beer gut.
And besides, "net friends" are not really people. They're words; they're 1's and 0's; they're ether. Sure, their is a person behind that keyboard, but like I said, they may be making a false or idealized portrayal of themselves. And even if they are honest about themselves, you're always limited by geography and finances. How much of a friend is your net friend if he's not willing to travel 10 time zones to see you? Finally, net friends because of their nature as faceless, fleshless beings, lack all the intimacy of real friends. You can't reach out and touch your net friend. You can't give him a hug or a kiss, and you don't have the nuances of body language and facial expressions.
Besides, even the strongest net friendships hang by a very fragile thread--an internet connection. What if your suddenly goes away? Or his/hers? I used to worry about former net friends. When they haven't posted or I'Med in months without an indication that they left or were busy, I immediately assumed they died.
Anyway, just try to meet people and be friendly. Something good may come out of that.
