Canada Day, or Dominion Day, ou La Fête du Canada, ou Le Jour de la Confédération

A land of vast distances and rich natural resources, Canada became a self-governing dominion in 1867 while retaining ties to the British crown. Economically and technologically, the nation has developed in parallel with the US, its neighbor to the south across the World's longest unfortified border. Canada faces the political challenges of meeting public demands for quality improvements in health care, and education, social services, and economic competitiveness, as well as responding to the particular concerns of predominantly francophone Quebec. Canada also aims to develop its diverse energy resources while maintaining its commitment to the environment.

Canada Day (French: Fête du Canada), formerly Dominion Day (French: Le Jour de la Confédération), is the national day of Canada, a federal statutory holiday celebrating the anniversary of the July 1, 1867, enactment of the British North America Act (today called the Constitution Act, 1867), which united three British colonies into a single country, called Canada, within the British Empire. Originally called Dominion Day, the name was changed in 1982, the year that Canada gained full independence from the United Kingdom. Canada Day observances take place throughout Canada as well as internationally.

Frequently referred to as "Canada's birthday", particularly in the popular press, the occasion marks the joining of the British North American colonies of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and the Province of Canada into a federation of four provinces (the Province of Canada being divided, in the process, into Ontario and Quebec) on July 1, 1867. Canada became a kingdom in its own right on that date, but the British Parliament kept limited rights of political control over the new country that were shed by stages over the years until the last vestiges were surrendered in 1982 when the Constitution Act patriated the Canadian constitution.

Yea for all my friends here in <Canada>....Happy "July 4th On The Wrong Day" Day!! :P

and for all those having three day weekend have a happy "Faux Holiday" coz I'm not off work...I hate to say it but the Fourth IS a fake holiday since it appears most people aren't off work unless you work for the govt or something... So yea all Fed Holidays are fake..the only two real ones are Christmas and Thanksgiving haha. (Yes I know there are very few that have to work those two anyway like those working for Wal-Mart but practically EVERYONE gets off for those two)

Tell me, dear Canadians, what do you do to celebrate the day? Are there any special traditions for the country? For you personally? O:

Some of the more Patriotic Canadians wear red and white, have parties, and I've heard of fireworks, but never seen any in my little rural town

I live near Toronto, though I missed all the works of fire as I worked in a kitchen of fire

I happened to help hand out 4000 Freezies at my churches stand at a festival today (yesterday technically)

Today my company had a 4 July picnic and I wore my Canada day shirt. The other 364 days a year, I'm a bad Canadian.

lol, did you know Vancouver, Washington, was originally a Hudson Bay Company
fort? They had give it up because of an agreement that the U.S could have everything below the 49th Parallel
