Seme? Uke? What are they?

As I understand it, Uke is the agressor/attacker in (soft) martial arts, such as Aikido, Judo, etc. The opposite would be Nage, the defender and person who performs a hold, throw, choke, etc.

I don't know about Seme though. :sweat:

...the terms are also currently being used in Japanese pop culture to describe personalities. people with more aggressive, active characteristics are called "Uke" and the people with more receptive, passive characteristics are the "Seme."

yeah, i think i remember that in martial arts, the seme's called nage. either that or they're somewhat related.

I'm pretty sure that these terms are also used in fanfiction of the less favorable kind*cough*yaoi*cough* Which is helpful to know if your trying to avoid this on fanfiction.net or any fanfic sight. ^_^;

Sadly, the most I've ever seen of those terms HAVE been in the fan fiction community when the describe who is dominant (seme) or recessive (uke) in a relationship. Good to know about to avoid, I agree 100%.

*sigh* I wish my favorite fandoms didn't have huge yaoi fanbases... sometimes ignorance is bliss... *sighs again*
