Lent

Tomorrow being Ash Wednesday and all, I was wondering whether or not anybody else out there is observing Lent. I'm curious how other groups prepare for Easter. If you do observe Lent, do you give anything up?

thanks for the reminder... every time I actually participate in Lent it brings me closer to God. I'm giving up computer games for lent... yes, computer games.

I do not practice Lent, although I have nothing against the practice.

I don't have any specific Easter practices, although I will go back home for Easter weekend since Spring Break does not coincide with it this year.

I don't give anything up say, I just make promises to myself. Like going to the Catholic Chairties on Friday with my Christian Sorority. That kind of thing.

You give up things the same way Jesus gave his life.
I'm giving up Gamecube.

Lent is takes place between Ash Wednsday (today) and Easter. It is merely a time for those to practice it, to reflect and prepare for Jesus dying on the cross. And rising to save us all.

Also, Lent is forty days long (not counting sundays) to remind us of Israel's wandering in the desert and Christ's own fast.

Did anyone get ashes today?

I give up artifical sweets and junk food over lent. I've never tried it on a college campus before though, so this Lent should be interesting.

I love observing Lent, it really makes me think...

Webcomics. I wanted to pick something that would actually give me more time to spend with God, and would also be an obnoxious thing that would stay on my mind. It is too easy to give up something minor and painless.

Last year I tried warm water. My parents stopped me after one day before I killed myself taking baths.

LOL, yeah... I'm giving up webcomics too! ^_^ I was going to give up chocolate, but that wasn't really taking very much time away from God...

I don't celebrate Lent. Wouldn't know what to give up even if I did.

Yes, but I strongly dislike showers. Besides, that would have made it far less painful. Of course, it would have been more painful than doing nothing, but it still struck me at the time as diluting the matter.

I don't have the capacity to give up something for Lent. Nothing against the practice, I personally just don't have the internal fortitude...

i'm still not sure what i am giving up. i guess i better make up my mind soon...

the hot water idea was funny! and i actually think it is good! maybe i should try it... (i don't take baths though. i don't think i'm ready for that ^-^)

I don't think that you are supposed to harm yourself physically doing Lent.

But anyway, I don't celebrate Lent or anything other than Easter day.

I don't see how taking a cold bath is physicaly harmful.

That would depend where you live, what the temperature is, and how high your heating device is running. Here in Kansas at this time, with our families near lack of heating (we simply don't use it), to step into a cold bath is highly painful. Furthermore, to stay in it for some time would lower your body temperature enough that you could well catch pneumonia.

And no, MasterDias, it isn't supposed to be harmful. That's why my parents stopped me after one.

Hmm.. yeah I'm giving up something for lent. My little brother is giving up 'lunch desserts', which is pretty much the classic children's sacrifice at my house, and a couple of other things. I'll probably do that, and stop playing video games during school hours (an easy habit to fall into as a homeschooler) and I'm also going to try to put an end to a bad (slightly embarassing) habit that I have.

I thought about giving up spending as much time as I do on CAA, but I've decided that it would be a shame and a bit odd to give up one of the most christian-based elements of my life for the sake of pleasing God

Still, I'm going to sign off now and start on that Geometry assignment :thumb:

I guess being from Phoenix I never really thought about getting pneumonia from taking a bath.

Last year I gave up beef. I'm such a carnivore. It would be a real test to give up all meat. I might do it one of these years, but first I'll have to learn to eat something other than meat.

Hey, since we mentioned it ... the popular myth about cold weather making you more susceptible to illness is actually not a myth, but it's not a myth for the wrong reason. During the cold months people are in closer quarters and more likely to be indoors where pathogens can concentrate in greater quantities, increasing their communicability. While there is some truth to the idea that being cold runs down your reserve, the increased exposure is far greater of a risk factor.
