I think it means an enthusiastic Christian. Personally I can't stand the expression - it just seems really cheesy.

DC Talk had a very popular song about standing your ground as a Christian called "Jesus Freak" (What will people think/When they hear that I’m a jesus freak/What will people do when they find that it’s true/I don’t really care if they label me a jesus freak/There ain’t no disguising the truth). Then the band released 2 books by the same title chronicling Christian martyrs throughout history.

But yeah, like Straylight said, it's someone who's enthusiastic almost to the extreme for Christ.

Whether the term is derogatory or complimentary depends on the source. If a non-Christian says it, it is probably a derogatory term, meaning that you are a fanatic. If a fellow Christian says it (although I have never heard this outside of big church conferences and such) it just means that you take your faith seriously. I don't know whether DC Talk coined the term, or whether they actually borrowed it from non-Christians mocking Christians. Either way, I'm not terribly fond of the term.

I read the first book book a while ago, and it is excellent. There are a lot of powerful stories, from the past and present. There is also a list of countries in the back that are still persecuting Christians today, along with the degree of persecution.

I know jesus freak is cheesy, but i think it's cool because if from a christian, it's like they're saying that they're not afraid of professing their Faith in jesus no matter what other say. I dunno, i kinda like the spirit behind the word when it is used by christians

Yeah, I know what you mean. It's sort of encapsulates the whole "though none go with me, I will follow" attitude.

I think the term is a modernization of the so called "Jesus People" of the 70s.

Of course the name "Christian" was originally a derogatory term used to describe what was known during the mid first century as "The Way."
