The Anti-gun thread

PostPosted: Fri Jan 30, 2004 2:52 pm
by Twilly Spree
Since there seem to be threads about people's love of guns, why not a topic about people's dislike of guns.

I don't like guns, I am anti-gun. I don't mind hunting, seeing as my grandfather was a hunter. I can see owning a hunting rifle and keeping it unloaded with child safety locks on. Then getting out to go hunting with that's it. But I see no need for someone to have any kind of loaded rifle in their house.

Same ground rules apply. If this thread gets out of hand, it's closed in a hurry.

... and posts like that count as out of bounds. Let's try again, folks. I want to see reasoned discussion, not slogans or quick takes.

Since the anti-gun people pretty much kept quiet on the gun thread, I'll leave this one alone. So please, continue. :P

My opinion on guns: the level of control should depend upon the society. There are some parts of the world where looser gun controls would be beneficial, and other parts of the world where it would cause serious problems.

One thing I think is certain -- once you loosen the controls it's pretty hard to go back again. The handgun ban induced by the UK's Dunblane shooting gave the black market a fair boost.

However I also think that prohibition of anything by law is successful once the average man on the street cannot easily find the illegal goods. As a result I'd say the UK's gun policy is a success - if I were to try and source a handgun it would be near impossible, unlike many other types of illegal goods that are prohibited - for example drugs, pirated music, etc.

I think that prohibition in the US would be dangerous - there are already a lot of guns in America.

well remember in the 1920's prohibition of alcohal, it didnt work. so i doubt doing that too guns would work too.

Firearms won't go away until we find a better weapon. Just a fact.

I'm going with Straylight on this one; It depends on the area. I don't quite agree on the UK firearm ban, but that's not really significant right now.

I don't think the lesson of prohibition can be applied to this all that well. It's fairly easy after all to make booze. Admittedly, a handgun ban would be difficult to implement in the US; it would take many years to take the existing supply out of circulation. And all this of course has implications for us here, given our shared border.

Hmmm.... I find this all...interesting.... I'm still reading all the posts in this and the previous gun thread and I'm gonna keep silent on my detailed opinion on the gun issue.... so as not to start trouble or anger someone......

All I'm gonna say is.... Guns are one of my hobbies and interests.... I know how to use and respect their power....yes, I've made mistakes in the past with them, but I learned.....

EDIT: Actually, despite my strong beliefs about the insulting and demonizing of people who like guns, I am after this going to keep my fingers frozen on the issue. It just upsets me that this go so violent, and all in response to the "Do not discuss" thread. I ask that all of you stop the name calling and bitter arguing and demonizing... It may come to the thread being closed, but I think that starting it to spite them for the "Do not discuss" thing is very childish and not very Christ-like...

I didn't make this thread to argue. I made this thread as a place where people that don't enjoy guns can talk. If you don't like, just ignore it and talk in the gun threads. I don't want to argue. I don't want to debate, hence why I did not bring this up in the gun threads. I just want to talk to other anti-gun type people. This is in no way a response to the "Do not discuss" thread. I am in no way doing this in spite. If you have a problem with me, or this thread feel free to pm me. But for now can this be a friendly open discussion about not liking guns. Thanks.

Just a quote, not an opinion.

Amendment 2 [1791]
A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.

I pretty much said what I needed to say over on the Guns thread. I think some people should not have guns, but I don't think a total ban in the U.S. would work and I respect responsible sportsmen and enthusiasts.

People who go firing off their weapons randomly to celebrate New Year's Eve and people with violent criminal backgrounds... guns and them.. un uh. They shouldn't have them. The deer hunter who wants to tromp around the woods with powder-rifle and get some fresh venision... he should have his gun.

Anyway... what I DON'T respect is people coming into this thread just to start up arguments and say that the thread should be closed because of the controversey they started. If the gun-nuts (and I mean this in a respectful enthusiast-term way, like I call myself an "anime-nut" and an "art-nut") can have their threads... and they have TWO, COUNT THEM, TWO... the anti-gun people like Red Ninja should be able to have their dislike of guns topic.

I'd rather have a sword, anyway. Teehee. They're prettier.

While we're standing on our Constitutional rights:

http://www.law.cornell.edu/constitution/constitution.billofrights.html#amendmenti

Amendment I

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.

Also, last I heard, this right applies to everywhere, and no one is allowed to restrict the speech of another. :)

Here is what I don't understand: So many people here are all for the second amendment. What happened to defending the first?

I must be missing somthings here....how does defending the second impede the first? Because guns scare you that is a grievance?

"Also, last I heard, this right applies to everywhere, and no one is allowed to restrict the speech of another"

I think we have been great as far as that, have any of your posts been altered or deleted?

Gaaaaaaaah! Stop fighting!

I think what is being said here is... don't complain about the anti-gun people poking their noses into the gun enthusiast thread just to be anti and zing you, then come along and do the same thing in the anti-gun thread. People have just as much right to make their anti topics and speak their minds as you have the right to own what you own.

Under the constitution, you have the right to bear arms. Fine. Under the constitution, people have the right to dislike your right to bear arms and to speak their minds on the subject. As long as we are for rights here, let everyone have their rights.

Amen. I have no issue if no rights are being taken. When people go after others rights...then I have an issue. Carry on.

*pulls up her sleeves*
See? I can bare arms, too!
:forehead: Okay, I know that was lame. :eyeroll:

I don't have much of an issue with people keeping guns in their homes (LOCKED UP, UNLOADED, AND FAR FROM CHILDREN'S REACH!), but I don't think the average person should be walking around w/a gun in their belt. It's just not necessary, in my opinion. Too many bad things might happen.

Oh yeah. And I don't think that people with a history of mental illness should be allowed to have guns, either.

For the record..people that march into a grocery store with a gun on there hip or want to walk around in populated areas showing off guns are not only idiots but they give us hunters and sportsman bad names. OoOoo look at me..I got a gun on my hip and a void in my head....

Good point by the way Milly. ;)

I do not mean to start a flame war over this so I will say one thing and one thing alone: yeah right you didn't.

Doesn't make it right for the gun people to come over here and harrass you, but last I checked there was opinions thrown on both sides in ALL of our little "gun threads". I can't say that I'm very pleased at the moment...I am with Bob; seems to me some people are rather irritated about the decision I made concerning what can be discussed here and have decided to go a step further to mock me. Others claim this isn't the case, and fine, I have to believe them. But trust me when I say that I do not for a minute suspect things are as nice and innocent as all that.

Actually I thought things were going fine, don't I have free speech too? Or is it guns or free speech...must be.

Oh my bad, I did not read the sign "gun haters only!" I'm sorry, I am not in the he-man women haters club. (little rascals reference ;) )

You wanted anti-gun people out of the gun threads. So I started my own thread about my dislike of guns. Yeah I was upset about the gun threads, but I've never once said we need to ban guns. I knew of a few folks floating around CAA here that didn't like guns. Instead of hiding our opinions through pm, I felt it was okay to talk between ourselves. Since others can keep threads if they're nice I figured I'd give it a shot. Did it work? No, but I tried. So sue me.
