My strange pet ideas

Here in Fairbanks, AK, there are many different animals, both strange and facinating. However, most of these animals are dangerous.

Well this winter (as it is like -11 here as I am writing this) I began to wonder what pets i could get for free. Leeches are quite plentiful in the ponds and lakes here. I have only been here for a while (4 months), but I know that this is true. When cooking, my mother will dispose of various animal parts that are raw, which means they are filled with blood. Also, minnows are also plentiful, anda leech will attack one and drain its blood.

They don't require much space, either. I can keep then in a pickle jar filled with water. This is also good for some experiments. I just have to wait until summer, but at least I have found something to do during winter. Who would let a turkey heart go to waste?

I've never tried turkey, but chicken hearts are delicious. Why waste it on a leech?

Why would you want a leech for a pet?

Frankly, I'm astounded no one has yet said, "Leeches suck!" But yes, that is a very strange idea for a pet.

Normally the blood is drained out of the meat before it is sold, so your raw animal parts may not have enough blood to feed it.

I'm a little confused.

This thread seems to imply that keeping leeches for pets isn't normal.

I love my pet leeches.

Sometimes, when I'm all alone... they start talking to me.

I've swum in the River Murray and had leeches all over me.
Wasn't fun.
Put a little salt on that wound.

I wish I had a pet turtle. I'd name it Carravaggio. And then I'd buy it a katana and teach it to be a ninja. A Renaissance painting ninja.

Leeches for pets...yes I do think that's the strangest pet I've ever heard of.

My grandparents' neighbours had a praying mantis as a pet though. It ate honey from your finger. Quite cute actually.

Praying mantises are awesome!
As a kid I used to find them in the gardens at school and we'd scare the girls with them.

I've had crickets and a snail for pets, but never leeches.

I guess the problem with leeches is that they wouldn't be very much fun. What do you watch them do all day?

Isn't that what you do with fish? Watch them swim around and poop all day?

I love fish, but only smart ones. It is very interesting seeing the social interaction within the fish group. Some of them are agressive, some of them like to swim around fish that look the same. What is funniest is that sometimes fish would think the other one is their own kind just because they look alike. XD

Having leech is indeed strange, they are not all that easy to raise though, unless you have livestock that can provide blood, or unless you live in an area where you can buy raw blood. Keeping one in a jar can be tricky, because you don't want it getting disease, which tends to be the case with a smaller container like jar.

You could always feed them yourself.

And herein lies the common misconception of fish. Fish aren't really a pet in all but the most technical sense. Most aquarists would rather refer to them as being closer to like being dedicated to keeping a plant. It's more of an item for whom the process of tending it is a hobby in itself. They're really more of a care intensive decoration.

I've always wanted an unicorn or a pegasus.

But, I'll settle for a silver thoroughbred. Now, that would be quite nice to own! I would be happy.
