Do japanese people in japan spank their kids when they misbehave? I seen it in a few anime (not enough yet) like in dbz when Chi Chi spanked Goten when he first fused with Trunks and didn't listen to Piccolo when he said not to go fight Buu without being super saiyan. and also sm when Usagi spanked Chibi Usa after putting sleeping potion in the sailor senshi tea.

I don't know the answer to your question but to me I'd think they would...
I'm the kind of person who thinks spanking is ok as a last resort and think putting laws on it here in North America is LAME. It's hard enough to keep kids on track (so I've heard) without discipline rules.... I'm not saying that the laws aren't in place for reasons... ppl who beat their kids can... *grrr.... ** nvm... the world is a sad place... >,<

What country has never had people who spank their children? I mean, it's not a Japanese thing.

Just wondering, but are people in America not allowed to spank their children in their own homes?
They were trying to pass a law like that here too. I actually don't know if it ever went through or not though.
As for people in Japan, I really don't know.

I can't belive the law puts spanking as "child abuse".
I mean, that's not child abuse that's discipline. child abuse is if you slap, kick, punch, throw, etc. a child. I read on another forum that someone said he/she witness a mother at a restaurant whose kid was acting up and she slapped him and started cursing at him. now that's child abuse.

I know, it's ignorance. Spare the rod, spoil the child. As someone who was abused violently physically, I can say that only ruins the child. In the Bible it even talks about making your child angry with you.

It worked for me. 15+ years, and no adverse effects; in fact positive effects are apparent in abundance. Why anyone would want to pass a law banning spanking is beyond me.

Yes, within reason.

I do believe spanking is necessary when raiseing children(Of course not all the time, just when they don't act the way they should. But also after the child is spanked they need to be told why they were spanked and then the parent needs to give them a hug so the child won't feel unloved.). Because as the bible says, "Spare the rod, spoil the child"(As Tundrawolf quoted.). If I wasn't spanked when I was young, Id be alot worse off(Seriously I would have been because all my guy classmates are even more immature than when they were before.).So I think there should not be a law against it(As long as it's just spanking and not overdueing it. Like to hurt the child in any other part of their body. And their should be a reason for it. Not that the parent felt like it or wanted to. That would be child abuse.).
Im not sure if Japanese people do spank their children, but I would think since they do believe you should respect your elders that there children are properly punished when they do wrong.

Just a remember that the outcome of something that happens to one person does not apply to everybody else.
Not saying that I'm against spanking or anything, but do keep that in mind. The argument "I've done such and such and I've never done such and such" never holds water at all.

I'm not a parent (yet) but I suppose I could put in my uneducated opinion. I'm not against spanking although it needs to be used wisely. IMO, it should not be the very first immediate action where disciplining is called for. When it is administered, I agree that certain rules are laid down. I've seen a fellow church member discipline his 6-7 year old kids. He tells them the reason why he spanks them. It is usually a reason that demonstrates the parents' love for them.
E.g. Do not wander off on your own because there are some ppl out there who will take you away ("kidnap"). Daddy and Mummy don't want that to happen to you. So we have to punish you if you disobey."
He goes off to further explain where he'll administer the punishment (i.e. hand, butt, cheek) and he'll even say how hard he'll do it (I.e. hard enough until you'll cry).
Heh, it may seem scary to a kid but hey, I think he made his rules and reasons pretty clear.
Spanking also only works to a certain extent such as age, and balancing between positive and negative reinforcement seems like a good idea to me.
Y'know, I turn out a pretty decent kid without any spanking. OK, I'll admit that there was only one time my mum chased me with the discipline rod. I skipped classes and played with my friends instead. Hehehehe I was super freaked and never did that again. XD;;;
Oh and do the Japanese do it? From a limited experience of working at this particular kids program in Japan, kids were allow to run around freely and madly. They screamed, they jumped around, they pummeled adults, they tumbled around. 0_0;; I wondered how mums disciplined their kids (dad is usually absent with these kids) and according to my friends, they say the mums don't discipline
too much at this age. *shrug* I don't know, that's what I've heard.
Do note that my experiences are limited to some parts of Asia. I don't know how it's done in other regions but SuperNanny is enough to convince me that some kids need discipline.

I like that idea as well. You can't just tell a kid they're doing wrong all the time. You have to praise them for doing good things too.

Not trying to start a debate, but I don't plan on using the OT as a guide for parenting. See Deuteronomy 21: 18-21.

Well first off, Negative Reinforcement isn't always "Negative" in it's context. Positive Reinforcement is the increase or decrease of a certain behavior by giving them something. In this case, spanking for bad behavior and a toy for good behavior. Whereas Negative Reinforcement is the opposite: Taking something away to alter the frequency of certain behavior. i.e. "If you stop crying I will not spank you" (Negative) as opposed to "I will spank you if you cry one more time". (Positive)
So yeah, Negative Reinforcement isn't always negative, and Positive Reinforcement isn't always Positive. They simply mean if something is given or taken away. XD

Same here. 18, and I'm not a wreck because my parents spanked me. I'm glad they did. Some of my friends, well, were not so lucky...
I agree that spanking is a last resort, too. I mean, you can't spank a child for every act-up.

Spanking in discipline is a good thing. If it leaves welts, bruises, burns, scratches, scars, or draws blood, however, then it is considered child abuse. Yes, you should discipline children with spanking, grounding and the like. But when it goes over the top (such as beating them with a bamboo stick twenty times), though, then it's abusive.

It hasn't been passed here yet, although a lot of people are still trying to get it passed. But for now, corporal punishment is only banned in schools...

I was never spanked as a child ( me or my sister)..My sister really rebelled and I didn't. It had to do with our personalities I believe also. i think my sister would have rebelled spanked or not.
That being said, i believe in spanking. I believe it should be delivered with clear consequences going up to spanking. (ie. time out first, loss of toy, etc). If a child does something it shouldn't immediately go to spanking in my opinion.
It should also be delivered within moderation of the child's age and personality and especially with love. Afterall, my sister may not have blinked another eye at spanking while even the thought of it might have terrified me as a child. heck, grounding was enough lol
