Public Cosplaying

I know some of you here cosplay, so I decided to create this thread for those who cosplay outside cons.

I've been in an Akatsuki cloak to... Chuck E Cheeses, Malls, Target, Wal-Mart, Fast Food Places, Bookstores, Grocery Stores, hehe, a lot of places. X3 Here are some reactions I had:

(This is what I was wearing by the way: http://www.399cosplayshop.com/itachi-akatsuki-cloak1.jpg

- At the mall, I was eating some Wendy's with my family. Then a mother with children went up to me, asked where I got it, and told her children loved anime.

-I was at the mall again, and someone recognized me, and another person looked at me like I was from a cult XD

-People makin fun of me while cosplaying at the movies

-And... uh... Well nothing that great. Just things you'd expect, like weird stares and rude comments.

I wanna hear your stories. :3

I don't make it a habit of going out in cosplay, unless I'm on my way to a shoot or an event with friends and we happen to stop by somewhere. One lady asked us if we were fashion designers once. :| Ooookay.

ahhh, I simply LOVE "real life" (ie ootside of cons) cosplay! I've done catgirl, lolita & worn a kimono to work, ummm, anywhere, really... Especially fun is when I am dressed up and picking up my kids from school... that always gets cheers from the other kids. :)
Oh, I also wore my Naruto headband to work, and to the pool, etc... Man, I know I've done more than that... I'll have to think on it. Most of my outfits are cosplay inspired anyways... I have a dress and shrug combo that reminds everyone of Aeris (especially when I do my hair like her!)... since I have no shame, I can get away with cosplaying anywhere! :)

Hmmm... I've never actually cosplayed outside of the appropriate places before (Cons, Ren Faires, photo shoots, Halloween).

However.... every now and then my roommates and I (for no other reason than to have fun) put on our medieval princess dresses and cloaks. We go down to the lake at about 2 or 3 in the morning with candles and juice and a laptop playing Gregorian chants. We read Grimm's Fairy Tales and make up our own stories and we dance around like fairies. hahaha... people driving by have called out things before like "BURN THE WITCHES" and "FREAKING HIPPIES" hahahaha we always laugh about it and go about with our fun.

It's not really cosplay... and not too many people see us (we're trying to be avoided haha) buuuuuut it is a lot of fun! XDDD

I tend to stick to cons, cosplay events and photoshoots. Gotten funny comments at photoshoots a few times though.

Our group did a huge get-together about a year ago outside of the Georgia Mall. It was a lot of fun to say the least. We got some strange looks and I think we puzzled mall security to no end. After that, we grabbed some dinner at Chili's (I think we probably ended up getting about 30 people together total) and of course, we had tons of people ask us questions. Fun times!

I never cosplayed, but if I did... I probably would wear whatever outside of cons ^^ Well, I guess it would depend on the whatever o.o;

For example, if I had the top that Aeris wears in KH2, I would so wear that ^^ If only it was blue though.. u_u

I remember after my first con, I said I wanted to cosplay as Sailor Moon. I don't think I'd go out in the sailor scout outfit though ^ ^;

I generally stick to cons.

I'm not much of a breaker of social norms.

Awww! You should try it sometime! It's awesome for the WTF factor alone! ^_^ I remember when I wanted to be a lawyer... I fully planned on opening my own practice and then dying my hair purple. Just because it would defy conventional logic and "break the social norm". :)

Wearing my Red Mage cosplay in a Crip-controlled area would probably get me shot.

I haven't, but only because I haven't cosplayed at all. When I have the time/money to do so, I will. And it will be all sorts of fun.

I haven't done it outside of photoshoots, cons or Halloween, mostly because my costumes typically involve significant amounts of theatrical makeup. Once I come up with a costume that can double as normal/semi-acceptable wear, then I'll probably do it.

But photoshoots on the beach in public...definite WTF factor XD

That is so utterly awesome!

If you get enough people together at a restaurant or such you can actually become the majority. Then you can give funny looks at the people who *aren't* cosplaying. "What's with the jeans and t-shirt?"

FukuokaGirl, HAHAHAAHAHH!!! XD Awesome! I should try something similar to that!

"What's with the jeans and t-shirt?" XD Yeah, I'll use that as my reply if anyone asks bout meh costume. XP

Oh, have you all heard of Mega 64? They dress up as video game characters and make fun of them in public. It's hilarious.

I sometimes wear my Trigun coat out in public. This usually gets me a lot of odd looks, because it's essentially a red trench coat to anyone who doesn't know the series.

The only piece of cosplay material I have is a Leaf Headband ^ ^ Not sure if I'd wear it outside though o.o I'm not even sure where it is anymore o.o;

*Looks around for it* >_>.. O_O.. <_<

Just wear it around your neck. It'll be cute! ^^

If I had the money, I would. I cosplayed at ACen this yeah as a random Akatsuki member and loved it. My friend and I did a photoshoot where she was Sasuke in her apartment complex and we had a bunch of girls laughing and giggling at us. I laughed and we just had fun walking around taking pics.

When I get my Ouran outfit, I believe I will be wearing it alot. I'm cosplaying as Hunny next year for ACen.

PS. All the comments on here are hilarious. I'll try the whole "What's with the jeans and t-shirt?" thing if people as me.

If I could scrounge up the money to buy FMA military uniform i'd go out in public as Hawkeye. as long as it wasn't in my town.

Well I have worn my outfits outside the conventions when I had to go eat or walking to the con from a hotel at either Otakon or Neko Con. I even worn it to a Target Store when I had to find something before I got to the con.
Now my outfit looks like a uniform that Japanese firefighters wear so I guess most anyone that sees it thinks it might be a security or special service uniform. I either wear the all orange with black military boots and black or orange hats with patches or the gray and white uniform.
At Otakon I had people comeup to me on the street and ask for directions.
I am now working on buying a traffic vest that has pockets to carry some of the medical tools that I carry in a hip pack to to make things easier during the time I work at Neko Con along with cameras and a radio.
I also have a rescue helmet as part of my outfit.

The City of Vancouver, Washington gave kudos to a number of attendees at Kumoricon 2007 for cleaning up a nearby park. The funny thing: They were all in cosplay gear. This is potentially to be continued as a tradition in what's known as a "Cosplay Cleanup" event.

I used to go to the mall in a sort of samurai-esque gear with a green kimono top and black hakama. That was fun! Especially when the Nihonjin(or at least those who worked at Little Tokyo) saw me. I could tell they were about to burst out laughing!

I don't think I'm quite so brave as to wear anything like that in public quite yet... besides, this is summer in So Cal. If anything, I'll burst into flames before I get laughed at.
