Yes, indeed, cats can be trained!
Training Cats

Some additional training tips from Friskies.

I didn't use clicker training, but I did teach my cats back home to sit, shake paws, beg, and lie down on command. The main difference between training cats and dogs is with cats, a pat on the head ain't gonna work --they'll only do it for the treats.

I taught my guinea pig to beg, speak, and come - does that count? XD

The cat on the other hand... eh... she's not too interested in treats besides chips, tuna, and pudding. That must've taken a heck of a lot of patience to train your kitties. O.O

Funny thing is... I never trained my cat to fetch... she just did it one day... >_> And she hasn't stopped since...

She'll cry if I don't play fetch with her...

People think cats are aloof by nature, but a lot of it depends on how they are raised. If you raise them to keep you company and respond to commands, they'll obey. I taught my cat to shake hands and to come. If I don't spend time with her, she cries.

A friend of mine has a rat named Javier. He's really smart. I remember one time when they lived with us --we had a bag of rat treats near his cage--he pulled the bag through the bars and ate them all.
She plans to knit a rat sweater for him with a hook for a leash--so he can walk around her store on the leash.

There is a place I visit-where 120 cats roam, the majority of which are in a house. They are taken care of, but it takes a troop of people all day to do so. Training a cat? It is difficult to even look at one anymore, gah! They are Gods creatures, alas...

Such a large number of cats --they probably aren't well-socialized --that could be why you are having trouble with them. A cat that is well-socialized from a kitten and who you develop a bond with is actually pretty easy to train. They have to have some level of trust with the person training them. Same with dogs --feral dogs are very difficult to train--but a dog that is in a family is easier because they trust you.
