Helps them pay more attention? Bull. Pay attention to the COURT CASE you're participating in. TAKE NOTES. That'll keep your mind plenty busy. Idiots. Have they no respect for their role in the justice system? If I were the judge, they'd have gotten one chewing-out they'd never have forgotten.

Trials are quite boring, so I can't really blame them for not paying attention.

actually, doing stuff like that really does help ME pay attention. i doodle all the time and it keeps my mind on what is going on around me. XD
plus, note taking is sooooo boring.

. . . so the "boring" nature gives them carte blanche to shirk their duties as jurors? I don't think so.
And note-taking may be boring as compared to doodling, but details are often critically important in court cases. Unless your memory is just that good (which would be unusual in my experience), it's important to take notes.

XD, so did I!
Not only is my attention span VERY short, but I suck at taking notes too. I hope that when it's my turn, they don't pick me.

This sounds like it came from one of those "Ace Attorney" games. XD "Your Honor, could we please get back to the case?" "Oh, right...I'd still like to know why the numbers don't line up..." *Sigh*

Ha ha, I guess I'll learn how to play Sudoku so I don't have to go in for jury duty

Yeah, you should. It's actually quite fun, and if you play the DS version on Brain Age 2 it lets you know when you get a wrong answer (if you put it on that setting, anyways).

Taking notes is not allowed in US courtrooms. So our jurors just fall asleep. At least they were staying awake.

That's, frankly, retarded. There are easy ways to make sure the notes stay in the courtroom, and notes help most people organize information.

According to this excerpt from a criminal law journal article (
http://www.jstor.org/pss/1139806), it's not keeping the notes in the courtroom that's a concern, but rather that people may be distracted from other evidence while they're writing, that jury members with notes would likely rely strongly on the notes even if they have inaccuracies in their notes, and that a corrupt juror would have a better opportunity to influence the other jury members during deliberation with false notes.
It seems like jury note-taking can be allowed by U.S. judges, but the judge is given the choice whether to forbid or allow note-taking based on the case and the judge's discretion.

One juror said the game helped them to pay more attention by keeping their mind busy.
