Wonderful...

If the Liberals have the guts, they could actually bring down the government over this, and given themselves a nice campaign issue in the bargain. We'll see though.

It seems so in the article.

Yes, although it's essentially meant to duplicate the DMCA in the United States. For the time being, Canada has no law regarding downloading, filesharing, etc as existing laws were deemed to be inapplicable by the Supreme Court of Canada quite a few years ago (and in essence declared these activities to be legal). As a result, the previous Liberal government simply placed a surtax on all recordable media rather than try to police this sort of activity. The proceeds from the surtax were distributed in a fund to the various Canadian film and music bodies. Fortunately, being introduced so late in the session, this bill is likely to die when parliament rises for the summer.

I can't say I'm surprised. And if the past year is any indication, there will be no government-toppling done over this, which is fairly disappointing.

They're going to have to do it sooner or later, and this issue is one that will play well with the public. Seriously, the Liberals can spin in personal privacy and ownership, coporate lobbyists and "made in the USA" lawmaking by the Conservatives. Unfortunately, right now the Liberals are less than enthusiastic about forcing an election with Dion as leader.

As much as I know that this is angering pretty much anyone who knows anything about computers and the Internet, I don't think this is a huge issue for most people. I'd say that there have been many things that an election could have been called over in the last year that would create more of a stir than this. I will definitely be writing to my MP about this though.

WHAAAATT?? You mean they're ignoring IMPORTANT stuff like world poverty and under age drinking and drug use (rambles on for another 10 sentences mentioning stuff more important then illegal downloading) I know that it is a problem, however going as far as "seizing objects such as TiVOs and checking them for copyrighted media" is a going a bit far....*cries* I go out and buy anime as much as possible however how in the heck I am I going to find anime which has never been released into Canada in dub? ((VAMPIRE KNIGHT!!!)) ... needless to say I'm a bit irritated...going and selling pirated stuff is crap however.... errrr... *walks off irritated*
