Temporary Outage for CAA: 6/10/2008

Hey everyone,

Looks like somebody nicked the main internet trunk with a backhoe somewhere in the vicinity. Internet access to CAA will be spotty for the next day or so. That's what the outage this morning was about, and you'll probably have trouble accessing for a good portion of today.

Sorry, but there's nothin' I can do about this one, guys!

Hey guys, it's an educational opportunity!

Really, I'm curious: I had normal access for a while and then abruptly the site wouldn't resolve. I saved my posts in a text document, naturally, and today everything is fine. What exactly causes this? Is my computer trying to get data from a path that got physically cut off by the backhoe?

It was probably a routing thing. Somebody patched a route, which worked for you, then tried something else (perhaps unable to switch to the new trunk from all locations previously served) and you were left hanging when the new patch failed to serve you. The topology in telecommunication network management gets so complex, it's a whole field of study.

Mind you, this is just a guess. It could have been something in the IP layer, too, like DNS getting glitched up while sorting itself out. Being less familiar with the network engineering side than the telecom side, I leave that for others to comment on.

The Internets.. such a mysterious place u_u/

I tried using the http://66.92.1.159/, but even that didn't work u_u Lol, yes, I still have it saved from long ago when you told me it, UC ^^ I'm such a pack rat xD;

Backhoe, you say? I'm curious as to how one would fit that into a computer. Maybe it's a mini backhoe? Or perhaps the main internet trunk you speak of is quite larger than one would imagine?
This does explain why I couldn't connect to CAA yesterday, it seems to be working okay today though.

Must be one bIg trunk to be able to get hit with a backhoe o.O

Yeah, the problem seems to be fixed, so all is good in the hood (haha, did I just say that) ^_^

Is this as straight-forward and non-satirical as it appears? What was severed by the backhoe is the cable that transmits the data from the server on which CAA is stored - in this case the central one for Mithrandir's area (note how "trunk" serves as a metaphor). That means that until it was fixed, the server was (partially/inconsistently) cut off from "the internet."

Or at least that is my limited understanding.

Sounds right to me ^^

My internet died earlier today ;_; Better not be attack of the gophers again o_o I was just kidding around with the cable/internet guy when I blamed it on the squirrels, but then he said I was close.. it was gophers >_> I guess that's what we get for moving into a house with a small wooded area separating our back yard and another o.o
