anyone else heard this?

the new thing at my high school:
-the teenager-only ringtone.
its this ear-splitting annoying sound for a ring tone, that seems to be heard inside your head. but, the wierd thing? apparently it can ONLY be heard by thos under the age of 20-30 (depending on who you are).
apparently the sound was developed to clear raves of teens, who would be heard and hurt the teens while un-affecting the older cops.
now its being used so teachers cant hear when your cell phone rings for text messages in class.
any one else heard this? if not, try to find it...:p

Ouch! Apparentally I am plenty young enough to hear it. I have to admit, I thought you were joking when I first read your post. I think I am going to test it on my parents next.

[font="palatino Linotype"]Aah, I used to be able to hear this. It was introduced a few years ago, but for some reason, my ears are too damaged to hear it...

It's called the Mosquito. It's been around for a while. Ironically, using it is probably damaging youngsters' ability to hear those frequencies.

Yeah, that sounds like the singularly worst idea for a ring tone I will never hear.

Hm, I would imagine that that snickering and "OH GOD MAKE IT STOP"s in a classroom would cue a teacher in that there was a Mosquito in the room.
Still, the idea of it was pretty cool, although the earliest uses of it (to scare away teenagers, even from more innocent places like loitering outside store fronts) seems to be in bad taste. Yes, people under 20-30 are ALL self-centered discourteous brats, but even that doesn't justify what amounts to a weak form of torture.
But imagine-- parents and adults use the Mosquito to threaten and torment kids into behaving, but then it turns out that it also unexpectedly EMITS HYPNO RAYS that turns kids into zombies that take over the world. It's just asking to happen.

haha, some students in my english class tried this on my teacher and she didn't hear it. Then my teacher told us to go try it on some other teachers in the building and they were just calling us crazy. It was pretty funny, but really annoying at the same time.

O_O... wow, 22 and I can still hear it! YAY! I feel a year younger! Maybe I can star in my own anime after all O_O. And what's worse is that I can teach at a high school given my degree in physics mwah ha ha!!! (But I could have done that two years ago too
... I was thinking about it too just to try something that I thought would be rather funny...)
Of course its a solid tone, which means that if I drop it on some music software I can measure the frequency, and from this I can produce a resonant rod attached to a bell which will vibrate like the galloping gurdy upon the use of one of these fellas... Hmm... I could even attach it to an amplifyer and... excuse me while I go off and ruin all of your poor childhood lives with the ugly foot of physics. (I'm just joking I haven't fully analized the situation enough... although I feel that something like this could easily produced and sold to deviant minded teachers... I could become a happy wealthy young man... until swarms of kids come to hang me)
Another interesting note is that this is the exact same sound all the television in our house (and our neighborhood) make when they're on but the vcrs off... I don't know how many times I walk into our house and even though I'm not in the room I tell my dad that he's left the TV on while we're gone... He looks oddly at me every time. Reason is, I can here this sound and they can't <^_^>. Bad news though is that sometimes on a clear night, this is the one sound from our neighbors that will carry through to my ears... and man is it annoying (I'm not sure if its a television or just some random electronic equipment because EM equipment seems to like to make this noise).

I've been hearing it for 2 years, and it is annoying to the point of screaming. Reminds me of a certain day in Latin class.

Pascal, I know what you're talking about with the TV thing. For some reason they emit this really, really high-pitched noise. In school, the TV would usually get left on with nothing on it, and would look like it was off. But I could always tell when it was on because of that sound.
Maybe it's the government mind control device attempting to hack into your brain. :O

This kid in my Health class has it on his phone and he sets it off sometimes. I actually had never heard of it until a few months ago.

There's a tone that one of our TVs in high school used to emit during videos that only about 1/8 of my classmates could hear. It was annoying. This would be too and I wouldn't doubt that someone would come up with a cheap detector.

hmm... I wonder if I create a giant sound emmiting device that emits noise at this frequency level and aim it the local high school when their football games interfere with my studying... then amp up the sound so that it reaches the 120-125 decibal range in the stadium... Mwah ha hah ha...
Or maybe just aim it at the school in the middle of day to watch mass senseless panic ensue as the teachers wonder why all teh kids are cringing on the floor and the dogs are howling in the neighborhood.
This gives me so many evil devices for my evil villian documents... mwah ha ha ha!!! Teh world will sooon be mine!

I've never heard the ringtone before, but I have heard the buzzing sound that TV's make. Not just the ones at school either, all TV's. I can always tell if a TV is on in my house because of that sound. For a while I just wondered if I was crazy or something. :/

Our old tv used to emit that high pitched squeal as well. I could always tell if the tv was on when I walked within 50 feet of it. With our new tv, however, I can't hear any such screak (its a word, look it up). Weird, it must be a government conspiracy. Hey, don't look at me funny, I have been reading 1984, I know a conspiracy when I see one.

Are you just supposed to be able to hear a buzzing noise in your head? Or is there some song that Im not aware of? I can hear the buzzing noise but nothing else. I too can tell when a tv is on, if Im within range. Because one time I was a school much younger than I am now, and I could hear this buzzing noise. So I went looking around for it and some classrooms over it was a tv! Im not talking about volume, but the sound that tvs emit whether they are mutted or not.

GAH a lot of tvs do that... and I can hear them from several feet away.
It's an annoying sound and I'm like ">_< dang, there's a tv on down the hall.."
sometimes I can just walk by a house in the neighborhood and hear it...

I'm sensing some Twilight Zone- type conspiracies going on...
"Jimmy, what are you talking about? You must be hearing things!"
"NO MUMSIE, CAN'T YOU HEAR IT? THE TV IS ON AND IT'S SENDING ME MESSAGES!"

Yeah I can always tell when someone turns on a TV as well, even when I'm in another room and the volume is muted or really low. It's weird because it seems like it can travel through walls as well. I'll have my door closed and I'll hear that noise and I know someone, somewhere in the house turned on a TV.

Welll, I know that, as an Electrical Engineer, I should have known better, but all this time I've been thinking TV's weren't making that irritating squeal anymore because the manufacturers had improved their product.
Now I know. I had just turned into an old person somewhere along the way.

This was five years ago for me, so the TVs at the time were probably at least 3-4 years old... so by now they'd be 8 years old.
That being said... one of the LCD projectors at our school did something similar to the TV tone, and that was only 2 years ago, and the projector seemed reasonably new at the time.

From the previous posts, it seems like there's an implied link to the sound in the first post or something... or are people just Googling for it?
I've heard that the TV tone is at about 16kHz (and I've also heard it at 16kHz too, haha..). Isn't it just CRT TVs?
