Yuki fans unite. Especially the "Prince Yuki Fan Club"
But seriously, why is the Chinese New Year significant? Would someone explain it to me? (feels kind of stupid for asking, but has never had anyone tell her why each year is assigned a different animal and whatnot)

(Haha, well, New Years' is a time to start afresh. So instead of doing resolutions like Americans do, the Chinese clean their houses, make sure all debts are paid, ect.)

The Chinese animal signs are a 12-year cycle used for dating the years. They represent a cyclical concept of time, rather than the Western linear concept of time. The Chinese Lunar Calendar is based on the cycles of the moon, and is constructed in a different fashion than the Western solar calendar. In the Chinese calendar, the beginning of the year falls somewhere between late January and early February. The Chinese have adopted the Western calendar since 1911, but the lunar calendar is still used for festive occasions such as the Chinese New Year. Many Chinese calendars will print both the solar dates and the Chinese lunar dates.

The Rat is associated with aggression, wealth, charm, and order, yet also associated with death, war, the occult, pestilence, and atrocities.
For more check out the Wikipedia site (where I found that first line

It's played in "fast forward" too often for me to actually be able to remember, let alone recite it.
I was tempted, though. lol.

Happy New Year and all!
Random thought.
What with it being the year 2008 in the Gregorian calender and all, is there a similar system for numbering the years in the Chinese calender other than the Zodiac?

Um, I believe Chinese New Year's Eve this year is actually the 6th of February.

The only special thing that comes to my mind is that in the Chinese zodiac, the Rat is the "first". Hence all other animals are "what comes after", if indeed one must put a beginning for a cycle (if that makes sense).

From my little understanding of the Chinese Zodiac the Rat came first only because he cheated in the race that the animals were having and rode on top of the Ox.
