Need a word for an essay

EDIT:I'm writing a process essay on how to write a compare adn contrast essay. Currently, I have what I've posted below for an outline. I did have Medium as A referring to te paper/comp, but I realized that medium should refer to the pen/pencil/keyboard, and right now I have canvas referring the the paper/compter screen. I know there's another word instead of canvas that doesn't imply painting as strongly as canvas does, but I can't think of it. So far everyone I've asked has drawn a blank, but I know there's a better word out there for what I need, I just can't come up with it.

what I have thus far wrote:I. Equipment ((no choice for that word, our teacher told us to use that))
A. Canvas
B. Medium
C. Topic and Idea
II.Safety ((again, no choice))
A. Paper cuts
B. Stabbed with Pens
C. Eye damage ((for comp))
III.Process ((no choice))
A. Preperation
B. Heading
C. Introduction
D. Body Paragraphs
E. Conclusion

Is there some reason why 'the page' or 'the blank/empty page' won't work? A 'page' is to writers what a 'canvas' is to artists.

Idk. I was kinda looking for a word that was...fancier? I guess, and when I hear page most often I think of physical paper, like with canvas I think of painting or other visual art. That's why I wanted a word that could equally imply both physical and electronic means. Like how I used medium to cover pens, pencils, keyboard, or any other substance one might choose to write with.
