How did you choose your avatar?

How did you choose your avatar?
Just because?
Because it's your favorite character?
Because it says something about you?
Because you drew it?
Or for some deep-seated psychological factor, such as choosing a gorgeous avatar to overcompensate for looks that you consider inadequate? (Like I think anyone's going to pick that!)
*edit*
Erm, I tried to add a poll, but it says I took too long. The purpose of my thread is defeated, but you can still answer if you want to.

i usually pick my avatar according to the manga series i am currently most actively pursuing.
- my first avatar was of spike (cowboy bebop) because bebop was my favorite anime.
- that changed when i began to storm through the many volumes of berserk that i soon grew addicted to; thus changing my avatar to that of gutts in his "Berserker's Armor".
- now, my avatar is of Manji (Blade of Immortal) because i have recently grown quite attached to BoI. however, because the series is still progressing in Japan and i have read up to the latest chapter, i have decided to take a break from the series.
- i read through the entire series of Great Teacher Onizuka during this break, but i never really thought of changing my avatar.
- now, i am re-reading the wonderful series, Monster, by Naoki Urasawa. however, i don't think i will be changing my avatar anytime soon.

I chose this avatar when Switchfoot released Nothing Is Sound, to honor my favorite song.
"The Shadow Proves the Sunshine."

I've had about 10 or 12 different avatars during my time at CAA, all for different reasons. XD My current one, though? I chose this one because the character portrayed is my all-time favorite, and because her character matches my username, so to speak. And because I just thought that was a cool picture. XD

1. Sonic the Hedgehog's my fav so far...
2. When someone looks at your avatar, that's really how they see you if they don't know you real well...I want to be known as someone who will be an encouragement to others as well as there for them whenever possible...That's baisically what I think this pic says, "It'll be alright in the end....you'll see."
3. It's the part of me that I want others to see, as well as to remind me who I really am...

Most of my avatars are pretty peectures from manga/anime I'm interested in.
This one ended up being Agito from Air Gear because I liked the maniacal grin.

I try to make my avatars match my user names in some way.
Right now it's just a simple illustration I whipped up in Photoshop.

My avatars change on a frequent based on how I'm feeling and my self-image.
This was my first avatar ever. I've used it twice at my first forum when I was 12, and again at my 6th forum when I was 16. This avatar represents how most of my future avatars would be like. A young innocent girl. Children are a very major part of my life, so I've chosen to make them a bit of a central focus in most of my personal pictures.
At CAA, I've gone through these avatars:
This picture was used representing my nervousness and doubt among the community when I first came.
I then made this one after I felt more willing to post in the community, and put on a more enthusiastic face. (Young Taeko from Omohide Poro Poro)
NiGHTS has always been one of my favorite video game characters. And he's always had an added mysterious air about his presence. I used this one when I felt more connected to the forum, but still felt new and mysterious.
I'm not exactly sure what this one was for. But I liked the look of the character.
After I was comfortable with the community, and had gained some friends, I couldn't be happier. So I used this one to express my joy. (Sakura from Kino no Tabi)
After that, I went through a variety of experiments,
Before choosing this one:
This is minus from one of my favorite webcomics minus. I love to dream and stretch my imagination, so this one represented that.
I still have yet to see all of Haibane Renmei. But Rakka is so far my favorite character from this Anime. Because Reki isn't quite an angel yet, and is still fallen in some areas, but she still tries to have a supportive and loving attitude, represented my current struggles with sin and other bad memories I was (and still am) experiencing.
My current avatar is Kino from one of my favorite light novels, Kino no Tabi. Kino is a very silent and calm character. But she isn't bitter, even though her appearance can easily be misjudged. I'm currently still struggling with sin, along with a few other personal challenges. And it's been a very long time since I've felt a true "healing joy". So this avatar represents a character who looks a little worn, and a little cold on the outside because she (or for that matter, me) is feeling both lost and a little neutral with (my) emotions. But Kino also doesn't give up easily, and I don't either. We both have to keep going on our Journey.
And that's all for now. I hope you liked my in-depth explanation. XD

I picked my little hippie avatar, Mokoto, because he's like my alter-ego! A cool, peaceful space hippie somedays, and an earth-bound professional guy other days! You can see the progression of my Avatars in my signature!

Because I'm crazy like that.
Actually, there's another avatar I was thinking about, but I have yet to find a clear, crisp version of the image in question.

Actually, I was on another forum where someone had the EXACT same avatar. And I said to myself, "Is that Andrew on a gaming forum?" But the E-mail was different. XD
More then likely someone has used one of my avvies too.

Let see I have had only two avatar that I can remember.
The first avatar I had, which you can see below, I chose because I wanted something memorable and different. I also wanted something that expressed my deep interest in all thing electronic. And it totally went with my online name.
The avatar I currently have I choose simply because I LOVE Kirara. She is so Kawaii, and just down right Kool.

Considering my avatar was stolen from a popular webcomic, I'm not surprised. If it wasn't for the novely of having one of the few animated avatars, and the inability to find said other image, I'd have changed it by now. On the other hand...
HYPNOSIS.

My first one here was of Mitsuki Sanada in her school uniform from Dual and my current one is of Dee Sanada holding Kumu.I picked both for the simple reason that Dual is my third all time favorite anime series and
Mitsuki and D/Dee are two of my favorite characters.

Except for my earliest avatars which were a wolf silhouette and Blue from Wolf's Rain, all the characters I pick are girls wearing cloth head covers of some kind, because it makes me think of a prayerful attitude. I also try to use my favorite characters such as Cheza and Cole from Wolf's Rain, Robin of WHR (she had a towel on her head XD), and my current avatar Rose from FMA.

Gotcha beat there...
Alexander Anderson from
Hellsing. No I do not think it is the best anime out there. It amuses me. Anderson however excites me every time I see him on screen.
He is so extreme and dedicated to his cause. And I double dog dare you to name another character that quotes more scripture then him! Ethical violence rules!

Wow! Thanks everyone for responding.
Now for my answer: I picked James because I wanted a retro-ish anime avatar of randomness. Most of us haven't seen Pokemon in years, so seeing James again is... weird.
This avatar actually says nothing about me, except perhaps "how odd."
Out of all the characters on Pokemon, James is the only "bishy" and I think that's funny. Also it's relatively inoffensive -- odd without being too weird.
