Mods - I am posting this here as to the best of my knowledge this is the most appropriate section. But please move or delete if inappropriate. Thanks.
This is the link to sign the online petition:

In all honesty, however noble the gesture, I doubt this will work.

I have to agree with Puguni. The Taliban are not holding these hostages because they because they think it's the right thing to do. They're doing it as an act of terror. Furthermore, I don't think they're going to be perusaded to change their behavior because the Western world (the petition is in English) asks them to stop.

Yeah, I'll chime in and say terrorists don't stop terrorizing because a lot of people ask them nicely... As sad as it is that this is happening, the petition is simply not going to work...

I think *Now this is an opinion* a petiton with alot of names could act as an encouragement to the Taliban and their actions, because terror is bascily trying to control/influence other people through the means of fear. Because if alot of people care and something bad happens, terror will have effect on people *Which is what they hope to achive as far as I know*. I would love to see the hostages released, however with terror as the goal it is highly unlikely even if we got half of the earth's population to sign that petition. If signing that petition would help, then that would be great, but I doubt Taliban would listen to something like that. Prayer is a great option. I will pray for the hostages and hope they will remain safe and hopefuly be released.

To the best of my knowledge, the mission of the Taliban and Radical Islamists is to convert or kill everyone who does not follow their way. I don't think that an online petition is going to do anything to a group who absolutely hates the Western world.

Despite how cruel of a joke that was... I laughed.

While such a petition would certainly not work on the terrorists, it could have an effect on the local tribal leaders who control that territory. The Taliban operates in that territory only at the pleasure of the tribal leaders, who are not necessarily immune to world public opinion. Of course, local public opinion is far more important and it appears that the locals remain sympathetic to the Taliban.
The petition could also be used as a club against leaders in the West to promote some kind of political agenda.
