Why Fs Are Important

PostPosted: Tue Jun 12, 2007 11:37 am

One of the important lessons in life is to learn to fail.If one only gets straight As and Bs and never a single F or D in school one cannot be said to have learned much of anything, except for how to get straight As and Bs.It's only when you have failed at something, especially more than once that you can truelly start to learn.
This is why Fs and Ds are important, they teach you humility and also determination.Once you have flunked a course and have had to go back and retake it or have been pulled back a year at school you learn to try harder
and do better.
The people who get straight As and Bs will never learn this and thus in the end will be the greatest failures in life because they have never learned
determination.

I guess getting a D or an F during your senior year of school is wholeheartedly worth it; hey, it's even better if you don't even graduate!

:C

I'm not being cynical. The way this world is run, failure is not an option. I lost my good academic standing because I was in danger of getting even one D/C.

Yeah, Ds and Fs are awesome! Then you can be prevented from going to grad school and be denied the chance to get a better job! Isn't that GREAT?!

Yeah, in grad school if you're getting a C you're pretty much failing.
The people who get straight As and Bs will never learn this and thus in the end will be the greatest failures in life

Why do I feel like someone got poor grades in school and is trying to justify it by slamming the people who actually studied and worked hard for their grades?

I'm going to have to flat-out disagree with you there. While getting an F might slap someone back into reality, thus encourage them to try harder, it's not going to be "beneficial" for them to receive that F as opposed to a Straight-A student.

I think you're assuming that Straight-A students don't try. Straight-A students get those straight-As for a reason. And that reason is because they don't spend all their time on internet forums or at the mall. Instead they discipline themselves to study so they can receive those A's.

A students have better study habits than F students. So really Mitsuki Lover, I have no idea what you're trying to tell us here. If you're saying Straight-A students don't have any determination, you're 100% incorrect.

This is the real world, not an anime world where the F students go off and get to kick monster behinds while the A students succomb to the dark side and phail at life.

yeahh...majorly disagreeing here XD

I know I have gotten a few Fs in my life...and it does nothing for me but make me depressed and doubt myself.

People have killed themselves over failing...stick that in your potatoes and eat it.

she moves to L.A. she wants to be somebody
three and a half years later she's still not anybody
she's still hoping for a break while she's waiting tables
realizing some dreams are fables
fear grows when she knows that she's out of control
throwing up in the bathroom hope that nobody knows
and she fears she's a failure she forgets that God loves her

you tried and you failed hold your head up high
you climbed and you fell hold your head up high
you tried and you failed hold your head up high
hold your head up hold your head up high

coz if we never make it ever then it's gonna be ok with me
coz if it's not ok to fall sometimes it's not ok to be
if they don't want us it's ok honest
it doesn't have to bring me down
let them say we're not big rock stars
it's not what we're about
we don't have to be rock stars
we don't have to be rock stars

they said he'd never make it maybe they're right
his parents never believe that his dreams could take flight
all he ever wanted was for them to be proud of him
it was the whole world to him he needed to win
he gave his everything but sometimes it's not enough
he thinks he's a failure now he's not worth being loved
he forgets he had the courage to climb up so high
the courage to try, the courage to fly

you tried and you failed hold your head up high
you climbed and you fell hold your head up high
you tried and you failed hold your head up high
hold your head up hold your head up high

it's not about success life is not a test
you don't pass or fail you just do your best
to see the view from wings of courage
to push on through when we're discouraged

it's all about the try all about the ride
learning how you were meant to touch the sky
failures are fliers who touch down
only they know what it's like to leave the ground

-Superchick "Rock Stars"

we all fall sometimes
we all let ourselves down
sometimes there's nothing left
but to live with what's been done
and know you're not the only one who falls

we all fail sometimes
we all let someone down
sometimes there's nothing left
but to promise to ourselves
that next time we won't be the one to fail

i want to tell you you can go on
that beginnings come from ends

i still believe in you and so does God
He's the one who still believes in those who fail
He's the one who still believes in us who fall
-Superchick "fall"

I hope these words shead a little lit here Mitsuki. I agree. learning from failure is part of learning ^_^

Just take a look at the wonderful country which we all presumably obsess over: Japan. Many teenagers commit suicide simply because they aren't perfect students and can't get into top tier colleges.

(You think getting into Harvard, Yale, or Johns Hopkins is hard? Try being a student in Korea or Japan and applying for a college there. If you're not a straight-A student, don't even bother trying to get into college)

Yeah, but saying that A and B students end up being failures in life isn't agreeable at all.

Besides, we're actually all failures anyway. Seeing as how we were born as failures: sinners.

Um, I got very high marks without even trying. I would say that "study" for me didn't get past "read the provided material a couple times and maybe do a bit of research" even in my early time at college, and even so I maintained high levels.

I would consistently bring detailed and cohesive evaluation of source material with only a short period of evaluation, finish programming exercises before most of the class had even begun, and generally succeed in everything far above average, and with less effort than many of my peers.

All that without proper "study habits". Some of us are genuinely smarter than average and simply sail through school with ease. Thus, for winning effortlessly, we, the elite, are said to phail at life.

XDD My sentiments exactly.

D's and F's aren't a good thing, no. XD Granted, we have a few exceptional people who did fail in school and still went on to do great things, but that doesn't mean that the average teenager who slacks off in school and doesn't do his/her work is going to succeed in life because he or she made D's and F's.

Yup. Anything less than a B- is a failing grade (at least at my school).

Also, not everyone who fails necessarily does better. For some it takes rock bottom to realize they need to do better. Some, unfortunately, never realize it at all.

It's really how you deal with failure. Some people shrug it off, alarmingly so.

I agree that failures are important but let's not limit the measurement to school grades, which is not what life is all about. My failures whether at work or at school have prompted me to look up to God, remember that all my successes are God's blessings (not just my doings) and to keep doing better. Failures are generally eye-openers to my pride because they hurt so much.

Some ppl assume that just because I got good grades, I'm this lucky genius. Complete nonsense. Those good grades are a result of determination and a spirit of never giving, which thank God, was cultivated in me, because I refuse to let the education grading system put me down.

Unless your some kind of gifted child prodigy, I'm fairly certain it already takes a degree of determination to get staight As and Bs in the first place. "And thus in the end will be the greatest failures in life"? Am I sensing some resentment in your words?

My point here is and was that the people who only get As and Bs will not know how sweet it is that moment when success finally does come their way. They too often
take success for granted. For example there is this one episode of Family Ties when
Alex wigs out because he gets a C in a college class that he expected an A in.He can't believe it.He is so arrogantly certain that he was going to get an A in the course that he feels something is wrong. It takes a talk with the professor to straighten him out,his work was good, but not good enough.
Also consider the fact that not everyone who works hard will get As and Bs.In fact most of us will remain C students throughout our lives. So this is also a defence of all us C students from the arrogance of those who feel that Cs aren't good enough.
Now back to Fs,yes,I have gotten plenty of Fs in my day,and they did teach me that
you have to have determination and try hard, even if you only end up with a D.
I remember one semester in Junior High I flunked the entire term in Math because I could not get it.No matter how hard I worked at it I couldn't get it.
Needless to say I was happy when that particuliar section was done with.
I am not saying though that being determined will help you to succeed in the end you might get your teeth kicked in by life so often that you feel like a punch drunk
boxer, but the important thing is to get up and keep going no matter what.
And this is something again that A and B students will never learn, especially if they keep on sliding through life.

And again, who's to say that A and B students simply "slide" through life? Last time I checked, for a lot of people, it takes hard work to get good grades in school. I wouldn't shrug off other people's hard work so soon; most of the people that succeeded in high school that keep that level of work ethic and determination will go on to succeed in life.

So yeah, basically, what I'm hearing you say is that because I graduated high school with A's and B's, I'm never going to learn determination because I simply "slid through" easily. Well, that's not true, because what I've learned is that life is not just about grades in high school. You can learn determination through means other than just a red mark on a paper. To say that an A/B student doesn't have determination simply because they made A's and B's is not only ignorant, but logically fallacious.

Ha ha, yeah.

Don't be stupid. Giving up and calling yourself stupid is a lot stupider than just being stupid. You're throwing in the towel on yourself, and wanting to be congratulated for it? Give me a break. For some people it's easier to get good grades, but it doesn't make the people who don't get them noble or the people who do get them lazy or underprivileged. If I hadn't gotten good grades in school, I would not be going to college this fall. I'm glad I got good grades... I didn't miss out on anything by not getting bad ones.

Come on though! To consistently get F's you would almost have to be putting no effort whatsoever into your studies. You'd have to never read your material and skip class practically ( I am exaggerating for effect). If you have that much trouble keeping your grades up, don't give up and pat yourself on the back for it (much less condemn the people who keep trying), get help! Maybe you need tutoring, or some one-on-one study help with a teacher.

Good grades are worth their weight in gold. Not that that means much literally, but it helps. Good grades say a lot to colleges and employers. Two of the colleges near where I live give free tuition to people with good grades and test scores.

It's not sliding through life to do well, it is sliding through life to fail (yes, that's what the F stands for). Don't base your life on sitcom episodes, wake up and smell the hummus.

Rant end.

Well, I think there's a difference. It's fine to say that failure is common, and if you fail not to give up but to dust yourself off and try again. It's also fine to say that sometimes failure opens up new doors that we wouldn't have had before.

It's completely different to say failure is awesome and that if you succeed all the time your life is somehow a waste.

All I have to say to mitsuki lover is, when you need a triple bypass open heart surgery, you can go to the doctor that failed out of med school, and when I need one I'll go to the doctor that got straight As, and we'll see who comes out better off, hmm?

Wow. This thread has really opened my eyes.

I fully see Mitsuki Lover's point.

Up until now, I've been getting A's on my Japanese certification exams. Dear God, what have I been doing?

All the hundreds of hours of study and dedication; the endless reviewing, all the hard work I've put towards insuring the success of my dreams; who knew I was slowly destroying myself and inflating my ego the whole time?

I am going to go right now and ensure I don't study any more so I can get an F on my next one. It will teach me humility and dedication, and actually give me a chance of scoring a high paying job in the near futu....

Wait.
