I've been thinking about making a captain harlock costume. Not for conventions or anything, just for kicks. Like to wear at school and stuff. Does anyone know where i could get the supplies and about how much it'd cost? Here's a pic of him for reference.

Supplies from the fabric store/thrift stores. Thrift stores are LOVE.

Cost? Probably a little bit more than some people might be inclined to spend. Granted, I am a bit more picky about the details of my cosplay, but right now my Yamada Hanatarou costume, which is obviously much simpler than Harlock's outfit, is running me somewhere around $60. I don't mean to try to scare or deter anyone, of course, but just trying to give some perspective as to how much costumes can run. :3

I am here to tell you that thrift stores are indeed love. How do I know? I just used them for great justice. You see, I'm going to see Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End this afternoon, and my friend who's organizing a group to see it would prefer everyone to be in costume [he's going as Jack Sparrow, even though he doesn't look anything like Jack . . . he cand o the voice pretty well, though . . .]. Now, I've never put together any real costume before, and yesterday [Wednesday], I still had no costume. I went to our local costume shop, and they wanted FORTY-FIVE FREAKIN' DOLLARS to RENT a shirt and vest. I was not thrilled, so I decided to wait and think about it [driving my stomach into a knot, because I'm a horrid perfectionist]. Yesterday, I realized I HAD TO DO SOMETHING NOW. Dad suggested thrift stores. So off I went.

I put together a sweet pirate outfit for the same $45 I would have spent, only instead of a shirt and vest, I got:

~ A fancy swashbuckling shirt [a tuxedo shirt with French cuffs]
~ A cool piratey vest [a nice suit vest that looked much more expensive than it was :3
~ A toy flintlock
~ A foam cutlass [it had a bright red and blue hilt, so I covered thewhole thing in duct tape and wrapped the handle in black electrical tape ~ it now looks much cooler]
~ An eyepatch [with my hair, Mom thought I looked like Snake Plissken from Escape from New York ~ which is pretty accurate XD]
~ Clip-on earrings [oh-so-piratey]
~ A big gold cross necklace [it looks cool with the rest of the outfit]
~ A belt with a fancy, piratey buckle [I use it like a sash to hold my flintlock]
~ A big red tablecloth [I could make a cloak out of the thing] that we're going to cut into a sash for my waist
~ A glass flask. I kid you not. It was two bucks ~ I had to have it.
~ Some toy pirate coins [y'know ~ to bribe the theater people] ~ "What do you say to three shillings . . . and we forget the snacks bought at the closest gas station because your stuff is heinously overpriced?"
~ A pair of black, gauntlet-y gloves [sure, they're really latex cleaning gloves, but I'd have spent easily all of my $45 on leather gauntlets alone ~ if I could even find them]

All I do is add a pair of black pants and shoes [tall top-boots are out of the question given the time and expense involved . . . but someday . . .], and I have a costume that GASP doesn't look like I threw it together at the last minute even though I did. I am psyched. Watch the Post Your Pic thread this evening, 'cause there'll be pictures.
