MP3 players and IPods

Postby KBMaster » Wed Apr 11, 2007 7:37 pm

I'm probably the most technologically retarded person when it comes to anything audio. Can someone tell me the difference between an IPod and a regular MP3 player?

None.

There are some minor differences, but they all play mp3s files. Oh and iPods are prettier.

iPods were the first ones made, correct?

Well, IPods are made by Apple, and other MP3 players are made by...well, other companies. IPods also seem to be the most hip and popular, but being an anti-conformist, I'm planning on getting a Sansa e260 or e280. They seem to get pretty good reviews too.

iPods do not play some formats, most notably WMAs, and have an "inaccessible" built-in proprietary battery. They don't have a built-in radio, or voice recording (IIRC).
Everywhere like such as, and MOES.

Ipods are pretty much the Kleenex of mp3 players. Everyone calls most tissues "kleenex" (at least aroudn here), but not all of them are made by Kleenex, some are just otehr brands. An ipod is an mp3 player made by Apple. An mp3 player is made by somebody else. And Ipods are, IMO, not all that worth it, unless you're going for the 80gb, but even then, I still don't think they're worth it. Creative owns, epecially the Vision, Vision: M, and Vision: W.

What?

Is there a CAA podcast?

Yes, I believe there's two different ones. But I can't recall how to get to them, sorry. I downloaded them a little while back adn haven't checked for any more yet.

Some do, and there's also the Videora iPod converter software you can download for free.

I don't own one yet, but I hope to buy a Fourth Generation iPod in very good condition.

Why? Because it's more inexpensive then a Nano and can hold three times as much which is what I need for my very enormous music library.

Oh yes, and I'm an Apple loyalist. Silly Microsoft users, Apple is for kids!

Wow ... that doesn't look comfortable to be toting around - I'd be scared of damaging the screen, since it runs pretty much the length of the device.

I really like my ipod shuffle - it's small, it holds all the music and audiobook that I'd need during a day, and it's been working great way past the warrenty.

You can probably get this from the link OldMith posted, but an MP3 player is just a category of things, such as cats, motorcycles, or giant fictional city-smashing robots. An iPod is just Apple's wildly popular line of MP3 players.

That said, would anyone like to tell me why an 8GB iPod nano and a 30GB iPod Video are the exact same price [$250US]? Why would anyone buy an 8GB nano? I know I won't, and I intend to upgrade from my 4GB nano by college.

i have a 4th gen hpod color that i recieved for graduation a few years ago, but if i ever get another mp3 player it'll be somthing small light and flashed based, having 30-80gigs and video is like owning a desert eagle its huge and piontless for 99% of the people and only existsto add percived value to an allready mudane and limited product, i use it mostly as a HD for storeing class projects or backing up my PC. (which its great for) what i would like is at most 8 gig flash mp3 player with an FM tuner

That's probably the one downside to the W, but it's not that hard to carry around in itself ((if I'm remembering correctly and it's the same size as the M overall)). The M's easy enough to carry everywhere and keep up with, and it fits very nicely in a pocket or in a digital camera, cell phone, or mp3player case clipped to a belt loop. I'd like a W, but I'm not willing to dish out and extra $100 to get one, although the card reader would be very nice to have.

Yeah, some MP3 players do. They support WMVs, I think.

Thank you for all the info folks. I think getting an iPod would be a bit excessive, so I'm just going to find a good MP3 player. Thanks!

I might consider Zen. Is Latte a good brand?

At that price I would be wary, seems a bit cheap and it's not a well known brand.
I'll see if I can find you a comprehensive Zen review or two.

Reviews of some Zen series products:

Thank you so much for the links! They were very helpful! The first one is a little under 100 dollars(in American currency), but if it's a good brand, I suppose it's worth it, ne? I should have read all of the technical details that Amazon supplied. My sister's MP3 player was 70 dollars and hers can't play videos or show photos, so I guess that's a good deal! Thanks W4J and everyone else who posted!

Yes, the Creative Zen Plus (2GB) is fantastic! I have one. It's not a whole lot of space but the sound is great and yes it can play video, show photos amongst other things.
Very good price for what you get (wish it was cheaper here though). lol

No worries mate, glad to help you.

I wouldn't suggest a Zen. Not for the quality of the product, but because of the customer service. If it ever breaks and you don't have a warranty, you can be in a very sticky situation with an expensive broken MP3 player.

That's one reason I've stayed with Apple. If one of their products breaks on you, then you can have faith in their customer service to help you.

It might seem like a very small thing, but a company with a good customer service can be very mandatory when your product might or does break.
