As I said earlier in the chat, I think an English teacher just dropped dead somewhere.
Also, if I ever see someone write "IMHO" in a scholarly essay...I'll break down and cry.

Somewhere I once read that grammar's rules should be defined by the usage of the day. The question is, which has higher precidence? Spoken or Written?

Well, I question the validity of that statement, since we now have commercials that carry the slogan, "Where you at?" I don't care what time period you live in, that's just bad grammar, period. XD
The statement is true to a point, since none of us today speak the way Shakespeare would have, but there's still a defining line between "bad grammar" and "the usage of the day". XD

Actually, in many languages that WOULD be perfect grammar. Who are we to tell everyone else they're wrong?

I can just imagine it. Every answer on the test being "ROFL" or "Liek, r u serius?". Oh, the horror. :O

She said some pupils would be "stoked" if they could get away with using text language in exams.
XD
But why? It's unnecessary and that kind of language would look bad on a resume...

I think my new user title gives away my stance on the issue.
I have purposely delayed my interval in order to express myself in such a way as to communicate to the youth of New Zealand.
OMGWTC R U thnkng, NZ? ur n00 l4w is t3h 5t00p1d!
. . . : : injects self with grammar Prozium : :
The point is, quite simply, that such rampant deconstructionism is detrimental to the very concept of language and communication. If there are no rules governing a language [in this case, English] and defining it, then consistency is lost. If words do not mean the same thing to different people, how are they to communicate? That's why I avoid the use of Internet slang except for cases where it makes sense [for example, I use XD to indicate that I am laughing or find something amusing] or for satirical purposes [like the above].
Now, if you'll kindly excuse me, : : loads fully-automatic Cleric Berettas : : I have an appointment in New Zealand.

For one, the teacher would have a harder time deciphering the paper. Or is this rampant in New Zealand's educational system?
Next, there will be college courses on chat speak.

If you read on, most of New Zealand isn't particularly fond of this turn of events.

However, if I ever see "IMNSHO" I will break down and laugh... And search out the author of said essay, and pay them copious amounts of money, provided the topic of the essay and other content was worth my time.
That would be because a bit of casual speech and even a little netspeak shouldn't detract from their content if they have something important to say.

hmm...alot of the netspeak here derives from frightening places on the net, you know.
