Is it possible to be too cheerful?

My father has often accused me of being too cheerful. I think being cheerful is actually a good thing. For one thing, it has great health benefits. So what do you people think?

No I don’t think so. If it’s a appropriate time to express your good mood then you are fine.

But keep in mind that not all situations call for cheerfulness. Say someone is in the hospital and you are waiting to find out if that person is ok, then you should be somewhat subdued.

My father had a bad habit of making jokes at the wrong time, and not being serious about things he should have been. It was just his way of dealing with things. Though it didn’t make him a bad person, it still upset lots of people. And it made most of his family feel like he didn’t care about us.

If you are not upsetting anyone then be as cheerful as you like.

Also I would like it add that most depressed people don’t like cheerful people around them.
You know the old saying misery loves company? It’s the truth but misery only likes more misery.

As White Raven said, it's quite possible to be inappropriate. Inappropriate cheerfulness can communicate ignorance, apathy, spite or even outright malice. But, I think being cheerful or not cheerful enough has more to do with how you present yourself than how you actually feel.

I say sometimes to worry about the ones that seem WAY too cheeful :/ Apparently those in many cases turn out to be the creepy ones >_< Not all the time though of course, because I know lots of people who are like always cheerful and they're great to have around^^ Like, just having them around when you're down, just sort of ups your spirit because you cannot not be as happy as they are^^

I can see as a Christian people going "*eyebrow raise* What are you so happy about anyways?" because so many I know are just... always happy! Everyone gets their down moments of course, but I think it's awsome for people who are just naturally like that^^

I don't think you can be too cheerful, unless like, you're laughing at a funeral or something. But some situations call for cheerfulness, like when you're having a hard time at work or you're stuck in traffic. Unless it's a crisis or something, then there's no reason NOT to be cheerful.

Being cheerful is good, but it can be inappropriate, like others here said, and sometimes even when it isn't, people who are depressed may find it annoying. If nothing else, it reminds them of how miserable they are!

yea, I agree with the others. It's all about whether or not its appropriate to be cheerful for each individual situation.

but then there are cheerleaders.

they disturb me.

a little.

It depends on how cheerful you are and at WHEN you're cheerful. .

Stand by for an anime analogy:

If you're at the Tohru Honda (Fruits Basket) level of cheerfulness, then you're cool.

If you're at the Hamtaro level of cheerfulness, then you MIGHT wanna tone it down...and lay off the sunflower seeds.

The bible says something about Laughing with those who laugh, Comforting those who hurt... I think being really cheerful when someone wants someone to feel for them can be bad, yes.

The other aspect of it is if someone never feels sad, they don't seem honest at best, and they seem inhuman at worst. This world is messed up and someone able to avoid being affected by it sorta lowers the ability for connection with the people that are.

ROFL. FTW.

I agree with the general consensus. There's a time to be happy and a time to mourn, as well. I do tend to lean towards the more cheerful side of the spectrum, but it's important to be able to have more than one feeling besides "happy!" all the time. XD

When being cheerful, you must have the discretion to know when to be subdued and when not to be. However, many people that just seem too cheerful are actually hiding. They are in some sort of emotional pain, and don't want to face it, so they laugh and try to hide behind a facade of happiness. It can be a sheild, but it can slo be a natural state of being. I enjoy cheerful people - they are the exact opposite of me. I've been told I'm a bitter old man in a 17 year old's body...lol.
In any case, cheerfulness is good at times, bad at others.

On a side note...funerals aren't meant to be sad. They were originally a happy thing, a sending off of a person and the remeniscence of the good times you had with them.

For one, I agree with Destroyer2000 about funerals ~ at least for Christians. My funeral will have rock music and junk food and DDR. XD

Here's the way I see it: Life isn't always happy-go-lucky OMGLOL wonderful. So why should rhetorical!you be that way? Having an optimistic [at least, within reason] view of life is good, but always being all smiley irritates me. Dang kids! ^_~

Man, I was screaming laughing when I read this! For my funeral, I want to do one better--replace the rock music with clean hip-hop, keep the DDR machine, keep the junk food (just add sushi, of course), but right behind the pastor, I want a giant plasma screen (Not a projector, pure plasma baby!) playing all my favorite anime and movies--sans the Eva movies. I also want everyone in attendance to get a free box set of FLCL right under their seats. Somehow I think scoring 900,000 on "Move over Beethoven" while watching "His and Her Circumstances" would be a great way to remember me! :thumb:

After all, a funeral IS just a homegoing celebration.

I always try to be pleasant and cheerful, especially when greeting or engaging in small talk. In a very general sense, I do not believe you can be too cheerful.

It's how you express your cheerfulness that may get you into trouble. Be cheerful for cheerfulness's sake exposes your cheerfulness as phony and apathetic toward whoever you are speaking with. That doesn't mean that you ever need to be glum. You can be cheerful but not bubbly. It's called optimism.

I don't know, KBS. Not to criticize your choices, but FLCL is an acquired taste. Anyhoo, I think we also ought to keep in mind that God certainly wants us to be cheerful. It shows that we are accepting his grace and praising Him.

Eh...kinda. Again, as someone posted earlier, rejoice with those who rejoice, mourn with those who mourn. God doesn't want us to be super happy cheerful all the time. In fact...

"The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning, but the heart of fools is in the house of pleasure." - Ecclesiastes 7:4

It would be fun to plan our funerals.

(Needless to say, I'm definitely not "too cheerful" right now.) XP

This is why we have the word 'Pollyanna' in the vocabulary.Pollyanna meaning overly optimistic and cheerful from the title character of the movie of the same name.

I think the problem with someone who's too bubbly can come across as immature, and people are may enjoy themselves but in a mature manner can become easily annoyed, especially people who can't be quite during dramatic dramatic moments.

For example, I never watch ESB with other people because I hate when people start acting retarded during Mark Hamill's acting when Luke recieves the "great revelation." Its an amazing moment of horrid disbelief that some people can't seem to handle.

Actually, I'm rambling completely off topic now, but hey! I love to ramble!
Keep the cheerfulness in check!

"There is a time to weep and a time to laugh; a time to mourn and a time to dance." Ecclesiastes 3:4

Good song lyrics ^^
I always try to keep a positive and cheerful mentallity [probably spelled that wrong] when its the right time, but I'll switch when that time's up.
I don't see anything wrong about people who are really cheerful (as long as they know when to stop, of course)

But speaking of funerals...
A want a comedian at mine! *bricked*

Too cheerful?
Nothing wrong with that.
But yet...
