Guys and Being Competitive

Why is that guys get so competitive over the smallest things? Case in point:

I just saw a group of my guy friends, about ten altogether, deeply focused two guys playing a game of Connect Four. Connect Four! And they were still yelling, cheering, jeering, and making a huge racket, then becoming silent as they watched the next move with baited breath. They were discussing strategy, what they should do, and when one of the guys was about to lose, he cheated! Playing Connect Four! What was that about?

I just hope none of them were cutting class. This was just an observation and resulting inquiry of mine I wanted to share.

It's just for fun, ya know? Whether it was truly competitive or "pretend-competitive", playing things like that just makes the whole experience more worthwhile. XD

Connect Four is one thing, but it's even more worrysome when they get together to play Risk for 8 hrs >_< "The Monopoly of Men" it should be called, knowing how long that game can last :/

seriously, I think it can be funny, and sometimes even helpful^^ Like at church when my friend and I were stacking chairs and the guys weren't helping, so we were like "Look at this! We're stacking MORE chairs than YOU guys are! Looks like we're winning!" Then, all of a sudden the guys snapped into action and tried to "beat" us^^ Ah yeah... it's great sometimes^^

All in a man's instinct I guess. I mean guys and sports for once, although it's not ALL guys, and girls can be pretty bad too :/ As far as I think: sit there and be amused, unless they start getting angry and freaking out over a loss >_<

It's something that's built into us. We like to win and conquer. :D Nothing wrong with it.

I say their can be sometimes. Can't say that it's right to hurl a bottle of HP sauce at the TV (breaking both items and making a mess) when your hockey team loses, followed by being in a rage of a mood because of it :/ It happens...

Because men (people in general, actually) should never watch anything passively. Part of the joy of spectating is taking sides. No man observes a football game, he's right in the thick of it. Now I've never been an avid sports fanatic, so I purposefully don't watch sports because I can't get into it. If I can take sides in a competition, most of the fun is drained out.

XD I know what you mean, DS. I used to have a classmate who was SO competitive over like, stupid class games where the prize for winning was a Jolly Rancher or something. XD He would act like it was THE most important thing in the world, though! XD But hey, at least all guys aren't like he was. XD As far as I know...>_>

That remindes me of when we played musical chairs at my private school. The winner would get a peice of candy or something else that amounted to nothing. In the end it was always two guys and we went all out to win. We'd knock each other down, tackle one another...Aww...good times...good times...

QFT. Nothing fixes boredom faster than getting competitive over something silly. A good example of this is the lines for the rides at Disneyland. Two people choose one queue, and two other people get into the other.

"My line is moving faster than yours! HA!"

"Yeah, but our line is SHORTER!"

"At least the person operating out queue is better than yours!"

You can imagine what types of silliness this can stir up. It actually can be great fun and make the wait seem like it's not as long.

Like that silly commercial for the "left side" or the "right side" drivethrough to some restaurant. It was funny, but ultimately pointless for the guys to compete about it (on the commercial).

Pfft. What makes you think it's just guys? Girls are competitive too! Or maybe that's just me...

I agree with KBMaster, girls are just as competitive as guys but they don't show it as much or at least are more subtle.Us guys tend to not to have inherited the
subtelity gene.
On the other hand please don't tell me girls aren't competitive, especially the way
a group of them will try to out do each other to get the attention of one guy.

We men are masters of the planet, and it damages our pride to lose.

*chucks PS2 out the window*

HAH! NOT KICKING MY BUTT NOW, ARE YOU???

(In actuality, I'm not nearly competetive enough to actually physically damage my own property.)

Friendly competitiveness is fun. On general, I'd agree that guys are more competitive than girls, but competitions still run strong for females.

But a little bit of competition generates interest and participation. As long as people treasure each other more than the competition and don't take things too seriously, its really enjoyable to kick up some competition over even the silliest things.

It's the thrill of victory! :D
All your life boils down to that one moment when you obliterate your friends base off the face of the planet! Why, it validates your reason for existence, all the choices that you've made in life's journey have culminated in your victory.
...
Okay, I'm not quite that competitive, but I sure get a kick out of beating someone who takes it more seriously than I do.

I am pretty competitive but I don't absolutely HAVE to win. Competition just makes it more fun.

Yeah, pretty much. It's just like how some girls just randomly turn into 5 year old children acting incredibly silly and giddy. Or maybe that was just my ex-fiancee...

Although I'm "normally" not very competitive, I certainly get competitive over some stupid things, just not always the same stuff as most guys.

God made guys to be competitive. I'm not into sport, but I like a good bit of competition in other things. It's part of the warrior, leader, fighter, mentality.

It was Connect Four! I haven't played that game, unless I was watching the kids, since I was about six!

So what? Connect Four rocks (although Risk is better). Are you implying Connect Four is only for little kids? (lol)
You're a girl, you wouldn't understand the mind of a guy. God made guys and girls different for a reason.

Alright, explain this one. Our group went on a retreat and played some get-to-know-you games. The guys competed in the Snoot Shoot. What you did was lay flat on your stomach, jam a piece of captain Crunch in your nostril, then shoot it out as far as you could. Farthest distance won. Some 50 guys from all over the state were trying to outdo each other in shooting snot covered breakfast cereal out of their noses, including reloading ones they didn't think went far enough.
By the way, when it was the girls turn to play a game, I hid in the back.

I would refer back to Ikimasu's post to justify the actions during something like a Connect Four game.

Ugh. hehe Guys can be competitive to the point of ripping each others head off. lol
Too much testosterone in one room is NOT a good thing. lol Unless they're playing a game. hehe Bring it! XD
But Tenshi No AI is right, you can totally use it to your advantage with the "chair stacking" competition. hehe

I posted that because of W4J choice of words. What does Connect Four have to do with being a warrior? Not the best of analogies, although I know I'm guilty of far worse. No offense meant, W4J.

There is one thing that I get very competitive over..... football..... No matter what game is being played (it could be the Browns vs. the Texans, two of the worst teams in the league) and I will always pick a side. Even when it is two terrible teams, I'll start yelling at the refs/players when the team I pick isn't winning and shout for joy when the team I picked is. I confuse everyone I know, except for my best friend, because of this. They just don't understand....
