I'm not exactly sure how to use this word. Is Anime used in conjunction with it, as in "Anime Otaku", or does the word Otaku account for the word anime in itself? Basically, I'm confused about this word, and need some help on how to use it. :dizzy:

The word otaku has nothing to do with anime. It is a term used to describe someone who is obsessed with anything to a dangerous degree. You can be an otaku for instant ramen, an otaku for model trains, or an otaku for business cards.

Here in America, however, Otaku just means "Anime Fan" It's Japanese counterpart is more of an insult.

From dictionary.com

Main Entry: otaku
Part of Speech: n
Definition: an avid collector or enthusiast, esp. one who is obsessed anime, video games, or computer and rarely leaves home

I've seen it on shirts where it says 'Otaku' with like, an anime character, and I've seens shirts (but not limited too, lol) that says 'Anime Otaku' on it. I'm not sure it matters, though according to the dictionary, it could be video games or computer games, too. So I'd say Anime Otaku.

Actually, the dictionary definition on Otaku pretty much covers everything for me.

I've also seen "otaku" as another word to refer to one's house/home. So, it DOES have another meaning, just so you know^^ I believe I read that one in my pocket dictionary... can't remember :/

FWIW (what I've experienced anyway) the ones that label themselves as otaku are the elitists who think that dubs and dub fans are stupid.

I stay away from them at all costs.

Otaku IS a Japanese word for house, which is where the slang began - one who doesn't leave their house, etc.

Personally I stay away from labelling myself an "otaku" because it DOES have a bad connotation elsewhere - doesn't matter if I'm in America or Japan, if I use the word I feel like I'd be carrying the connotation with it; also, the negativity has spread a bit to the US, from what I can tell. *shrugs*

I have evil AOL...and my current connection is at 50.6 kbs on a 56 kbs modem.

It seriously depresses me somtimes ;_;...but I've gotten used to it.

On another note, I don't really use the word 'Otaku' at all...mostly because I'm not nearly as obsessed as the term seems to imply.
