I think if you have windows you can use Windows Movie Maker, a default program on your computer. I've never tried it, though.

If you're going to make an AMV, please please please don't use subtitled footage... That is all I needed to say, and have fun.

I think its okay if people use subtitled footage if they want people to read the subtitles, lol. Like, if its significant to the video.

It rarely is... People just throw in subtitled footage because they can't get ahold of raw or dubbed footage... It is distracting and makes most videos unwatchable for me... I'm not the only one. It's actually a rule for AMV submissions to a lot of contests that you can't use subtitled footage.
The only exception I can see is where the song itself is translated in subtitles, like the Ranma AMV set to the Baka song (from ranma.)

since this thread is roughly about my question, I'll ask it:
Where can I find the videos for an AMV? And how do I get them?

I don't know because I don't actaully make AMV, but I know there are alot of sites out there offering assorted anime clips.

Yes as said before Windows Media Player is wonderful. Final Cut Pro is great too if you've got a mac.
