Ok. I need to learn to like snakes. I HATE snakes. But I'm going into Animal Care for a job and I might have to care for a snake. So to help with this fear, I decided to get a pet snake (it hasn't happened yet). So can somebody suggest a snake that makes a good pet?

Well would you rather start off with a big snake, smaller snake? I like snakes^^ Personally, they look like legless lizards and since I think lizards are cute, they are too^^ I know smaller ones really like to squiggle around, which I know is one big reason why people don't like them^^ As far as I've seen in pet stores (and being handled) boas just seem to... sit there. People wrap them around their necks and even though the second part of their name is "constrictor", they seem pretty lazy^^ So if you want a laid-back snake that won't freak out and go all squiggle or even... pee on you as easily (ug, BE careful with that... it stinks >_<)

I was told not to get a small snake cause their edgy or something like that so I suppose it would have to be a moderatly big snake. What kinda of Boa would you recomend getting?

Go to the library or bookstore and check out or buy books on pet snakes and also if you know anyone who raises snakes ask them.

Small snakes are edgy? Hmm. I dunno much about snakes, but my nephews have a Kenyan sand boa, (pretty sure that's the name). It's an ity bity snake, only about a foot long. It just hides in the sand and is fed a frozen mouse once a month + a cup of water poured in the sand every few days. It seems super low maintainence and is usually handled without incident (as long as your fingers don't smell like rodent).

If you decide to go with a lizard for some reason, bearded dragons are great if they've been raised right.

If you get a snake, you should decorate its cage like the interior of a plane. YES.

Hmm. I hear corn snakes are somewhat popular as pets.

Does anyone know much about Rubber Snakes? I've been looking up snakes in this animal book I have it says it's non agressive and pretty tame. I'd consider that but it's kinda in California and I'd have to pay big bucks to get one. Kinda negates the question but yeah . . Alright does anyone know if Red Tailed Boa's make good pets?

I don't really know a lot about snakes, but my cousin had a pet snake for a while. It was a Ball Python, and as far as I know it was quite laid back and easy to handle. It got out of its cage a few times and freaked his roomates out though. lol I think he bought a live rat to feed it every couple of weeks, but I guess frozen would work just as good if your squeemish about that sort of thing. I know I'd probably go with frozen. ^^ The only real drawback that I can think of was that his snake got really big.

From what I've read, a Ball Python or a Cornsnake are good, small snakes. And it's actually better to feed them pre-killed mice or rats. I wonder where Heart of Sword is? I know she has a Cornsnake and could probably offer some advice...

YOU UNGRATEFULLY LUCKY PERSON!!!! I love snakes... I absolutely adore them... but alas... I'm torn between my love of snakes and my love of rodents. -___-; And never the twain shall meet. I have considered getting a cricket eating snake- Maybe this would be a good choice for you? I'm also interested in becoming a vet, so I need to deal with a lot of different critters (have dealt with a lot without getting bitten fortunately enough). Try Petco.com They have caresheets on several snakes with basic stuff like diet, lifespan, habitat, diseases, ect. Maybe you can narrow it down from there.

(P.S. I know you want to overcome your dislike of snakes, but make sure you're ok with feeding them live food (large pythons need to eat live rabbits) before you get one. I've heard stories about the poor dears being starved because their owner's got squimish. :wow!: )

you are so lucky! herpo-dude is here! the best snakes to start out wit are king snakes! they only get to about 4 feet tops, and can stay in a 25 gallon terrarium. next is the ed tail boa. the one i workwith is a bit more energetic, and for me thats pretty cool. also, i have never been bit by the boa. the kingsnake tried, but he was too small. it was kinda funny. if you want a really big snake, get a burmese python, they got to 18 feet! but i recomend the kingnke, that was my first, and hes very easy to manage.
