Hit and Run

As I was about to pull out of a parking lot at school today, I noticed a car behind me to my right heading toward me and not slowing down. I attempted to speed up and avoid it, but failed and it hit me. The driver got out said he had tried to use his breaks but they had not worked, and then asked how much repairs would cost, I was in shock and unable to answer, and he then stated he was going to go to an ATM to get cash and left. Luckily I was thinking clearly enough to attempt to get his license plate, he never came back.

Sadly, the right side of my car from the rear wheel back was impacted, and apparently something happened to the wheel itself. Something else must have happened because it will not start now.

I called the campus police and they came and helped me and took my statement. Apparently the license number I thought I caught was not bringing up anything, since the plate was muddy I wasn't able to get a good look at it. The officers had me put my car in neutral and pushed it into a parking spot, since it wouldn't start.

I'm calling the dealership in the morning to have them come get it for repairs. Thankfully, I live a block from campus and only a few blocks from my main class building, so getting to school will not be an issue, while my car is getting fixed.

I have not yet heard anything further from the police; it's highly probable that they will not find the guy.

Prayers that this can be resolved quickly and as painlessly as possible would be appreciated.

Oh man, that's awful! Hope they find the guy, but like you said, it doesn't look likely. Will pray that it gets resolved.

*has neither license nor car, and is glad not to be in this kind of situation, ever*

That guy sure sounds dodgy...

I hope the repairs are done as quick as possible!

That's bad... :( "The brakes weren't working" sounds like a dodgy excuse...

How severe was the damage? Was his car damaged much? Will you be charged for the repairs, or will the insurance company take car of it?

The tow truck is hauling my poor car to the dealership this morning. I'll call later today to see if I can get an estimate, or have a friend take me out there. *le sigh* As of yet I have no idea how much this will end up costing. The back side behind and over the wheel was shoved in a bit, and the wheel was struck, and apparently bent a bit. I know about as much about cars as I do astrophysics, lol, so I have no idea what this will cost.

:shake:

It sounds like he did it on purpose and like it was an obvious scam on his part.If he had been really concerned he would have waited with you for the campus police to show up and would have offered his statement too.
No responsible person would have left the scene of an accident, and no-one who was genuinely concerned would have come up with a lame excuse like
"I'm going to to ATM to get some money."
I guarentee that you have probably seen the last of him,at least for now.
P.S. It wouldn't surprise me if he tries the same scam on other co-eds at your school.

My heart goes out to you! That was a horribly unfair thing for him to do!

They probably won't be able to find him.. But I know he'll get what's coming to him. People always reap what they sow.

Well, I made a step in identifying the guy. I'm very bad at identifying cars based on make and model from memory. But I remember very well what his car looked like, and I spotted a similar style car on the way home today and did some looking online, and narrowed it down to a specific make and model, not sure about the specific year.

I'm also on a tear to find this so-and-so's car, no little red car shall escape my notice. I may not remember the exact license number, but I know enough of it that I will know it if I see it. I decided that I can either be reactive or proactive about this, and I'm not just going to let the guy escape without doing anything.

What about his face? That would be a little better; maybe you could even provide a sketch. XD

Oh my. I agree with Ultra Magnus, something doesn't add up. Did he seem like he was high or anything like that?

He seemed really sketchy, and eager to get out of there as quickly as possible... And he never said a word about insurance, even though his own car had been damaged as well. I wasn't about to try to detain him though, he was probably twice my size.

I did give police a description of the man when they came to help me and take my statement. I could identify him if I saw him again, but I probably wouldn't be able to sketch him.

Since I know next to nothing about car makes I was unable to give the police that info at the scene, but upon doing a little research, as I said earlier, I was able to identify the car as well, which should help more than 'it was a red car, I think it might have had four doors...' which was all I could say earlier, lol.

Wow, thats tough.

Well, I could offer some logical advice but as usual it seems that its more or less been said so it would be a waste of time.

Suffice to say my thoughts are with you and I hope this gets resolves fairly and painlessly.

I got the repairs cost estimate this afternoon, and it'll cost just under $4000 to fix my car, but thankfully, my insurance will pay all but a deductable. And they can start repairing it on Monday.

Oh ok, good that you don't have to pay all of that. It's quite a hefty amount!

My manager at Figaros got hit by a drunk guy on a motorized scooter when he was stopped in a parking lot. The guy was like 60 feet and kept going till he hit my manager, and then got up and said "Im okay, Im okay!" He got arrested for DUI, lol. Manager had a scratch on his bumper.

Next time you should attempt to detain the guy, stand behind his car or something. If he touches you, scream and call the police. I dont think anybody is going to try anything in a parking lot when someone is attracting alot of attention to the scene. When someone makes an excuse like that, they probably arent coming back, so you have to anticipate his intentions. Glad your alright though, its cool how your insurance payed for it. I hope you find the guy!

The odds are the car might have been stolen as well, which could be another reason why he was acting so dicey. There's no way an honest person would have left the scene of an accident like that without leaving some information.

That was my other thought: That he had no insurance, a suspended liscence, or anything else similiar that might him extremely reluctant to fill out a police report. He my have even had a stolen or counterfeit licence plate, which would explain the difficulty with the plate identification.

I heard today where a construction worker working on the road moving construction barrels was struck by a car and sent several feet down the street. The driver of the car stop the car, got out, looked and then got back in the car and took off. The construction worker is in serious condition and the driver and the car have not been found.
In this area there have been many pedestrian hit and runs.
I once witnessed a car run into a motorcyclist knocking them off their motorcycle in a gas station parking lot. I was in my county government vehicle and try to catch up to the car to get a tag number but they were driving as fast as they could and passing cars to get away.
I had to give up and go back and check on the motorcyclist after I had called it all in on the radio.

I've definately thought about the fact that he may have been in a suspicious position that would have gotten him in deeper trouble with the police. I've also been told that he could get in trouble for driving a car with bad brakes (which he claimed). As has been said, he was definately sketchy, and took the quickest way out he could find.

I know I could have been smarter in the situation, looking back. Unfortunately, I was in quite a state of panic, it took hours to calm down. I have anxiety problems, which were not helping one bit.

It could have been a whole lot worse though, thank God. ashfire, I can't begin to imagine the situations you have seen in your line of work.

Thank you to everyone for your support, advice, and prayers. I appreciate them so very much.

Bummer. My friend just got hit by a car on this birthday (and not in a car) and got a broken collar bone, and spend his birthday crying in the emergency room.
This is his xray. (for real)

Soul Alive, way to take charge! Sorry all that happened to you, but I'm glad you've been able to narrow down the make of his car and that your insurance will pay for the damage to yours. Definitely sounds dicey to me - maybe driving w/o license, maybe on probration, maybe outstanding warrants - who knows?

Again - thanks for the prayers and concern. Toolegit - that looks like some serious pain, hope your friend is okay now.

I got a call Monday from the officer who took my report, and he said that they had a pretty good lead on the car - they played around with the license number I gave them, and came up with a car that matched pretty darn close, and the owner won't pick up the phone or call the campus police back, which is pretty suspicious in and of itself.

They started repairs monday, so hopefully, it should be done soon. T_T I feel so lost without my poor car.
