Today I went to Wal-Mart and decided to look at some digital cameras. To my surprise, besides the utterly craptacular keychain cameras were some larger cameras that actually have preview screens (1.5 inch, 2.1 Megapixel). Price: $39.44

But, for what I think are highly obvious reasons, I distrust Wal-Mart. Are there perhaps cheap-as-dirt digital cameras that are neither keychain nor from Wal-Mart?

Off the top of my head, I'm not sure where you can find cheap-as dirt digital cameras.

It depends on how good quality of a camera you are looking for - if the megapixels for the one you found at Wal-Mart are only 2.1... you probably aren't going to be happy with the quality of pictures that it takes. If you have a Best Buy in the area, you might try there.

My digital camera has 5.2 megapixels - I'm very happy with the quality of pictures that it takes. However, I use it for photographing [architecture] models for my portfolio and for art photography. If you're just looking for something to take "normal" pictures, you can get by just fine with a camera with less pixels. Though, I would hesitate to get something with as few pixels as 2.1 (unless that is the screen resolution)...

If you're just looking for something to take simple pictures with, I'd recommend looking for one with 3 or more megapixels, those should generally be pretty reasonably priced. If you're looking for a camera with which to take high quality pictures, I would recommend getting nothing less than around 5 megapixels. There are [expensive] cameras out there that have around 8 megapixels, but unless you're a professional, that's pretty much unnecessary. The more bells and whistles on a camera the more it will cost, it really comes down to what you want to do with your camera.

I am by no means an authority on digital cameras, and I may be mistaken about some things. This is all from personal experience, so don't take my word on this, look into it.

Well, I have a 5 megapixel cam, and the pictures USED to come out quite beautifully. But then we did something to it and then they got REALLY fuzzy and now they're only decent. I wish we knew how to use it. Poor abused camera... it's being held together with duct tape right now. So I would recommend 5 megapixel and reading the instructions.
