A rant--Stop him before he preaches again!

 We have a local preacher in the New Orleans area named Rev. Bill Shanks. He has to be one of the worst preachers ever. When hurricanes Katrina and Rita hit, he said New Orleans deserved the devestation and even went on to say that the names predicted the disaster. News flash, Rev,--we name the hurricanes, not God. God just makes them. And I doubt seriously he thinks the way you do.
His most recent act was a pro-life protest in Mississippi. At City Hall, he and other participants burned up legal documents they didn't endorse. But it didn't stop there. He also burned up a copy of the Muslim holy book, the Koran. He equates the Muslims with the "Culture of Death". While I don't condone terrorism, I believe this is an outrage. Doesn't the Bible say something about a golden rule? I'm sure even Jesus would disapprove of this. This type of preacher gives Christians a bad name. And yet, some people, including the radio announcer who hosted the radio show I heard this on, actually praise his actions. But we all know how this person would probably act if a Muslim burned a Bible. What he did is the exact same thing! We are supposed to respect others' faiths, no matter how far removed they are from Christianity. Besides, not all Muslims subscribe to terrorism. Some are indeed protesting the terrorism that has escalated because of Osama Bin Laden. Those people need to make their voices heard. Then and only then will it stop.
note to mods: You may lock this if you like, but I needed to get it off my chest. Sorry if I hit a nerve. I just wanted to get people's opinions.

The sad thing is is that it's this type of preacher that not only give Christianity a bad name but also give fuel to atheists about how bad Christianity is.

I agree with you for the most part. This guy is way out of line.
Just wanted to point out that the golden rule is found nowhere in the Bible, though it's of little relevance to this.
There are other, more relevant things to be said, but I'm not sure how far one can go without crossing that line, so it'll stop there.

Sounds like he's got all the "right" ingredients to rise to widespread influence in Western Christianity.

wow...I agree with mitsuki lover, this is why a lot of people have this image of Christians as hypocrites who shove beliefs down their throats >_< ...God is love :3

I don't agree with his actions but I do agree with what he said about some of those things...Like the hurricanes...I'm not saying that God sent them but he surely didn't stop them and New Orleans surely deserved it. It was the murder capitol of the USA and easily in the top twenty most Godless cities in the world.

And with the whole muslim thing if you check out the Koran it does state more than once that if you see a christian or a jew you should kill them. It is a violent religion at heart. I'm not saying that all islamics are violent and evil but those who TRUELLY follow the islamic law are.

And as far as the God is love thing...That is completely true. But sometimes love hurts...You notice most of the kids who were never biblically disciplined are the most bratty and stupid kids.

I'm not trying to cause any arguments but I figured that this thread needed some balance. If you have any arguments PM me with them...Though you can kindly discuss them here.

Can't stop him, 1st ammendment.

But yeah, he changes the shape of the Christian world. I mean, why would other people take the time to look at "boring", normal moral Christians?

The Koran says nothing about voilence toward Christians and Jews. The Koran says various times that those who claim to follow God (Allah) can only be judged by Him, and not by man. This verse shows that point. Jihad was to only be carried out toward pagans. Now I am going to hurry out of the thread before a debate starts.

I have heard more than a few specific quotes from the Quran from Islamics and former muslims specifically quoting that Jews and Christians should be killed. It's been a while so I can't give you the specific places they are found...But I can look them up. You got to remember that the Quran can easily be taken out of context just like the Bible...

Here's quite a few versus from the Koran about violence towards non believers.

Rather than that, I'll simply lock the thread. It is definitely headed straight for an argument on an off-forum topic.
