White Lies?

Postby Mr. SmartyPants » Wed May 10, 2006 4:57 pm

Has your parents ever told you a little white lie when you were a little kid?

My parents used to tell me (namely my dad) that eating too much Chef Boyardee would give me cancer XD I don't know why I believed him, but after he and my mom would say "the newspaper" as their source, I started getting skeptical with what they said.

However, there were some studies on this over a decade ago. Wether they were accurate or now is uncertain. My parents still made a big deal over it.

I remember the old saying "if you eat you're broccoli you'll grow hair on your chest". ...not the most flattering thing to tell a girl^^

Oh my... also one time my mom was looking through her jewelery box and I peeked in a noticed a note that I wrote. It was to the tooth fairy and she kept it >_< Went along the lines of "Here's my tooth I hope you'll come and take it blah blah... your fan: Carla". I looked and thought "FAN?! Oh my..."

You know, technically, that might not be a lie. If you eat too much processed food, you won't be healthy. It might even contribute to cancer. Who knows, they might have been being [mostly] honest!
Every year in Uganda, innumerable children simply. . . disappear. These children all stolen under the cover of darkness from their homes and impressed into the guerilla armies of the LRA [Lord's Resistance Army]. In the deserts of Uganda, they are forced to witness the mindless slaughter of other children until they themselves can do nothing but kill. Kill. These children, generally ranging from ages 5-12, are brainwashed into murdering in the name of the resistance and into stealing other children from their beds to suffer the same fate.

Because of this genocide of innocence, hundred and hundreds of children live every night sleeping in public places miles from their homes, because they know that if the do not-- they will disappear. They will become just another number in this genocide to which the international community has chosen to turn a blind eye. They will become, in affect, invisible-- Invisible Children.

But there are those who are trying to fight against this slaughter of Uganda's children. They fight to protect these "invisible children." Please, help them help a country full of children who know nothing by fear. Help save the innocence. For more information concerning how you can help and how you can get an incredible video about this horrific reality, visit the Invisible Children home page.

My paranets never told me any flasehoods (Unless they thoght it was ture)
My paranets never told us about Santa. We knew where the gifts came from and it wasn't from him. Mostly the only Saint Nick we knew about was the real guy from history.

My dad told me that Pocahantas and George Washington were buried in the back yard. What's even worse is that I believed it for so long.
My sisters would tell me LOTS of white lies. Like once, they told me Yogi Bear was in the shower. I actually went to see. I didn't believe them. But I went to see.

I think pretty much all parents have told the "white lie" about the existence of Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny.

I think people use white lies mostly to make a situation either better for themselves or for others. For instance, when girls ask "does this dress make me look fat?" They really don't want you to say "yes" even if it does. That would hurt their feelings. I think sometimes people feel obliged to tell a white lie to preventing the consequences from being truthful.

From what you said at the end, Ryan, about their actually being studies on the possible carcinogens in that brand of pasta, it may be possible that your parents really had read something about it in the newspaper and were only looking out for your health. Or... they could have thought that it was too expensive and didn't feel like telling you "no, because we can't afford it."

Not all. My parents never pretended anything of the sort. We did put our teeth under pillows, but there was never any claim that the Tooth Fairy was the one who took them. In fact, even at a young age we only used such fictional characters in a satirical manner.

My parents were also adamant about not lying to their kids about anything, so I was never told that Santa came or that there was a Tooth Fairy or an Easter Bunny. Closest you could come would be my father's sarcastic remarks about food possibly being contaminated with botulism after I became really afraid of botulism poisoning (and I was afraid EVERYTHING could be contaminated), but I knew he wasn't serious and it helped me realize how silly it is to be panicked about that type of thing.

Well, I'm not sure if my parents told us about Santa, but I do know that my oldest sister told Rachel that her fingers got chopped off when she was very young.

my folks never lied to me about santa or the easter bunny or anything. tell you the truth, and kids, my brother and sister and I didn't really care, so our parents never had any need to lie to us about it.

I don't think my parents ever told us SAnta or the toothfairy exist. I probrably wouldn't have believed them anyway XD

Though, my grandma told me there's a snail in your nose that will eat your finger if you try picking you nose.

Santa and Co. were never a problem for me or my family. XD We only joked around about them and decorated with some Santa ornaments around Christmas. There never really was any need for my parents to try to cover up their non-existence. XD

However, there were plenty of other white lies to make up for those. XD My dad always used to say that if you swallowed a watermelon seed, it would grow a watermelon in your stomach. Broccoli stalks were poisonous (don't know why, XD); only the tops were edible. I've no idea why I believed some of these things.
