I had braces until about a month ago. I use a clear plastic retainer at night now.

I had braces from 7th to 9th grade. Now I'm just supposed to be wearing a retainer. "Supposed to" being the key words.

Nope, I got asked whether I wanted them or not and I was like 'No thanks!'

I had orthodontia from 3rd grade through the beginning of 8th grade. I should still be wearing the IR (invisible retainer) but a rather nasty unmentionable incident happened to it, through no fault of mine, and I haven't worn it for a few years. My bottom teeth did go back crooked again
.
My very back molars are also very crooked, since I only had braces on the first four teeth top and bottom. Once I have a regular job and am out of school, I'd like to get that fixed, since they are a fairly big problem.
Has anyone had the joy of the Herpst (sp?) Appliance? Those wonderful miniature pistons caused me a lot of grief back in 5th grade. I had a reaction to the adheisive they used to put them on, and had my jaw locked shut for two weeks.

My crooked tooth is part of me... And it helps me whistle! I'm not sure I'd ever want that taken away from me, not to mention the pain and discomfort and hassle that comes with braces...

When I had braces the two worst parts were:1)when they took the mold for your teeth and struck that nasty tasting goop into your mouth and 2)when you had to have them rewired.I also hated to go out in public with them on.Ok,I think most kids hated to go out with braces on.And then wearing them all night...

I started with my braces in the 2nd grade, with an appliance. This progressed to braces, and I got a one to two year break with no braces (but still orthodontist trips every 6 months or so) after 5th grade. I got them back on in 7th grade, I believe, after I had 5 teeth pulled (that may have been in 5th grade...hmm...). Well, after getting them back on in 7th grade, I had them removed in the middle of my 9th grade year, and my orthodontist trips continued into early 10th grade, I THINK. But yeah. 2nd-9th. I win for longest tooth treatment so far. XDD They're gone now, though!!

It's one of those passages of childhood that if you never had you probably will end up having to get when you get older.

You serious?! Worst part for MANY I'd say are those horrible, horrible spacers and the first week+ of having your braces on (because your, or at least my teeth couldn't even connect thus I could only bite down and eat with about 4 teeth that actually touched @_@)

I didn't really mind the spacers much (high tolerance for pain, hehe), but I did HATE getting the chain rubber bands on my teeth. OW. Those things HURT. XD Also, getting every type of food stuck in your braces is never fun. XD
But I'll have to agree with ML on the impressions...I have super-sensitive gag reflexes, and let me tell you, having a big, thick, slimy thing stretching to the back of your throat doesn't help at all.
Man, I do NOT miss my braces in the least. XD

Not ready to getting the chains yet....
About the food stuck in teeth, that's why toothpicks are my new best friends^^ Haven't even attempted to use floss (does it even work alright?)

I should have them right now actually. My teeth are straight, but my bite is crooked, unfortunately. Apparently, not being able to chew your food into mush is bad for your digestive system.

Hahaha, no! I could NEVER get floss to work. XD Toothpicks are so much more efficient, and so are water piks, if you can afford 'em (I never used them, but I hear they're great!).

Floss does work, but only with the lovely little threaders, and only if you have a half hour to devote to the task.
I graduated to the retainer fairly quickly, and because my teeth were so very co-operative, these little buggers are going to be my friends for a long, long time.

Ah, I remember the chains... T_T I had a large gap between my front teeth, and when they put the chains on, the hygenist went "oooh, I can SEE your teeth moving together! Julie come watch this." >_< They might have been able to see it, but I could feel it.
My orthodontist also apparently had a thing against loose molars. I had four molars in various stages of looseness when I went for a check-up, once. And the man just reached in my mouth and popped all four of them out. No warning, no pain-killers, just pop-pop-pop-pop, and one very shocked 11 year old.
And I remember getting the molds cast. They kept trying to use 'flavored' goop. As if having a large metal tray full of what feels and tastes like mint-mud is SO much better than regular mud.
lol

Hey, you need another option! "Did you have braces once?" Well I don't have braces anymore but I did have them for two years. So I feel you all's pain. But do not despair! When those metal clap traps come off you'll be beaming from ear to ear for about 2-3 weeks... it is a common side effect of straight teeth... ^_^
God Bless

The reason why I had to have braces was because I had buckteeth back in the day.
Also some of my other teeth came in crooked so they had to be corrected.
btw:When they did them they also removed my wisdom teeth.
