Question: can Foxes be kept as pets?

Ok.. wierd question, and even wierder coming from me lol! But I promise this is a serious question...
I am writing a story, and one of my character's has a pet fox. I was wondering...realistically, could this be possible?
I have heard that the bite of a fox is quite poisonous, because of the bacteria in it's saliva, and also some foxes carry a parasite or something.. But if you were to find a baby fox and like take it to a vet and if those things can be treated.....would owning a fox for a pet be ok?
Thanks for answering this random question of mine! ^_^

hmm . . it has been possible to raise foxes from young foxes, I've seen it on tv all the time on Animal Planet. I guess it would be okay to have a fox for a pet. but about the parasitic saliva thing, I believe that does happen to some foxes. I'm not sure, I'll look it up.

In time, I'm sure you could probably domesticate foxes just as cats and dogs have been domesticated.

I don't see anything about foxes having a siliva disease, maybe that's for rabies or something. but yes, I remember that the russian or europeans domesticated foxes for thier skins and even some were taken as pets. So it is possible to have a fox for a pet.

Haha, foxes are so cute. I'd totally have one if it wouldn't bite me. XD But I guess you could domesticate them, because people have domesticated skunks...You can have their "stink" gland surgically removed.

Well dogs bite too. Foxes are easy to domesticate from what I've heard and can make very good pets.

Yes, I believe I have heard examples of foxes being kept as pets. Many animals can be domsticated, even though it is usually illegal to do so.

Yeah, like in most states it is illegal to keep a wolf or a wolfdog, even though they usually make excellent companions (if you know what you are doing--except for some more aggressive individuals. Same with dogs). But people are allowed to have rottweilers and German shepherds... *shrugs* Oh well. I guess if it were legal everywhere, then more people would have wolves/wolfdogs who don't know how to handle them...
As for bacteria, yeah, I believe some foxes do carry diseases. Why they are illegal in some states remains a mystery to me. It might be for conservation, but not all species of foxes are endangered...huh.

Could be a blanket ban on all wild animals. It probably isnt too bad a thing, as it prevents irrisponsible people from getting pets they cannot handel. Though it does also stop responsible people from having, say, flying squirrels as pets. I would be nice if you could apply for a permit to own wild animals.

Yeah. Lots of wolves and wolfdogs are euthanized each year because people buy them, thinking they're easy to raise. It should be illegal to have them unless you, say, take a class on how to raise them. But I don't know why foxes would be illegal. It's not they have the potential to be that dangerous.

AWESOME!! see I was told they couldn't be kept because they were too wild..but this is soo cool!! not only will it work for my story, but if I live in a state that would allow it.. I could have a pet fox too!!!!

I remember when I joined the volunteer fire dept, our chief had gone and bought a fox at a pet shop which was back in the 70s.
He had it chained in back of the station and it burrowed a hole under the house we used has a station with a attach garage for the fire trucks.
They were trying to make it a mascot along with the German Shepherd we had.
Once in a while the fox would break the chain and run into the corn field across the street and we had to send in the shepherd to find him and run him out to us.
One of the members thought he would be funny and show the fox a sick bird that he held in his hand. He almost lost his thumb when the fox got the bird and made it under the house.
But saddly the fox got lose and ran out on to the highway behind our station and got hit and killed.
Well in a way I don't think it is legal or it may be soon illegal for anyone unless they are licensed to have or care for any type of wild animal in state where I live.
Just this week there was a fire in a auto parts store and when the fire was put out they found the owners pet 4 foot alligator alive protecting the office.
Many years ago one of the fire companies went for a fire in a barn.
When the crew went in with a firehose to attack the fire they came running out with a lion following which ran for the woods. The owner went and found the lion and put it in a pen afterwards.

Heh, this reminds me of when I went to see Narnia...
"...I want a fox!"
"...I want a cheetah!"
(and it went on like that...)
Exotic animals just look like fun to keep as pets^^ I mean, I saw in a magazine once on exotic animals, they had a wallaby listed! I mean, how fun would THAT be?? Get it to carry thigns around in its pouch (hopefully it's not like when the Simpsons went to Australia, in real life >_<)
...I also want a snow leopard.

...but a fox isn't that exotic..its not like they would be imported....^^;
And If I were a fox I wouldn't want to be chased by a german shepard either.
DUDE I Was totally one of those who was like "KYAAAAAA FOX!" during Narnia.. I clapped even.

How..How...HOW COULD YOU SAY THAT?! Just..Just because they were dragged over from the bigger continents...that doesn't..THAT DOESN'T MEAN It's their Fault!! Don't blame them!!! They gotta eat too!!
*sobs* Foxes are too cute to be vermin and too cute to be evil...

I want a pet chipmunk that will live on my head. (and crap in the potted plants)
Actually, isn't a part of domesticating something its natural temperment? I mean, isn't it much harder to calm foxes and wolves (and coyotes) down than it is a normal dog, even if you raised it from a baby?
Same with cats... The reason the species of cat got domesticated(sp?) that did was because those were the easiest ones to calmdown... Stuff like bobcats and Lynxes aren't as easy to calm... At least, that's what I'd guess...
People domesticate skunks... That'd be a cool pet. Name it "Pepe." You'd have to take it to a vet, though... You know... To de-claw it.

I don't mind foxes, they are cute as babies. But my relatives are farmers and they view feral animals as pests as they should.
Foxes may be animals, but they are vermin - not native and killers of all things Australian! (lol)
Although the fox in Narnia was a pretty cool addition.

Well if dingos were brought to America they would be the same! ^_^
So there are no Fox Fan Clubs in Austrailia?

True, dingos would be feral in America, but I'm guess they are more likely to be put in zoos than shot.
I think pretty much everyone wants Australian wildlife to flourish here, so I don't think there are many fox fans. Sorry!
(You're avatar is very awesome and it looks like your drawing style) keep up the good work!
