Full-Time Engineer by February 2006.

This is just an update to those who actually remember me (and for others, if they want). At February 6, 2006, I will start my full-time job as a computer communications network engineer at a large communications engineering corporation in Florida.

Changing from a full-time Georgia Tech student to a full-time engineer in the "real world" will have several effects on my posting here. An important one is that my CAA browsing schedule will be affected. (My guess would be that it becomes more consistent, though mainly on weekends.) Also, my "frame of reference" in my post replies will change from a full-time student to a professional engineer. I hope this change will be fruitful and insightful to CAA considering that its majority are... young students.

I just got back home from Georgia Tech (and I have no plans to return right now). I will have to find a new apartment since my company is located in a different part of the state. For those who still remember me, I thought this update will be helpful. For those who don't, this post is probably inconsequential.

Even though I don't really know you on a personal level, I consider you to be a good acquantaince, and it's nice to see you around again.

As a quick question, how long did it take you to find a job, and how difficult was it to find one? I know I'm in a different field of engineering than you, but just for curiousity's sake.

I consider you to be a good acquaintance as well.

I started to aggressively pursue a full-time job at the start of this fall semester, which just ended. So the start date would be mid-August. I accepted the job offer around... the start of November.

It will be hard for me to gauge my difficulty since I accepted the second job offer given to me. I have had phone calls from other companies and government agencies who expressed interest long after I accepted my job offer (I had to turn down a call two days ago). You see, the job I accepted, was from the company that has been #1 on my list of possible employers for 2-3 years. It was the "ideal" company for me, and I was pleasantly surprised they wanted to hire me so quickly. If I did not get a job offer from them, I do not how the job seeking effort would turn out....

The difficulty of getting a job depends heavily whether a person's skills, experience, education, and contacts line up with the requirements and expectations the employer is looking for. Apparently, one employer thought I would fit really well. Another employer had a close friend of mine working for them who recommended me highly to them, which was the biggest reason they offered me a job (though I rejected it in the end.)

Congratulations Omega! If you're in or around the Orlando area, you should pay me a visit. I'm going to be taking a semester off of school to work at Disneyworld in Orlando, so from 1/13/06-5/19/06, go ahead and look me up. Seriously, PM me when you get your new place in Florida, and maybe we can hang out or something.

That will depend on several outcomes. First, how far I will be from Orlando. Second (and most importantly), how well I adjust and succeed in my new job. If it turns out that I can spare the time to meet you, I will definitely consider it.

The person shown in this new avatar is still the same person from the previous avatar. Thanks.

Ronin?

???

I may come off as an individualist, but I still consider myself serving The Lord. So it is hard for me to see myself as a ronin.

Either way, it is nice to you too, Mithrandir.

And to glitch1501, Mr. SmartyPants, Warrior4Christ, and Technomancer: It is nice to see you too, and thank you.

Omega, my friend, what a pleasure it is to have you with us again. :) We certainly missed you during your absence. Especially those who glomped you on a regular basis.

*Omega is glomped.*

As a future fellow graduate (I've graduated a few months ago), I congratulate you on your endeavors and wish you the best in your transition from college to a full-time job!

Congradulations, Omega, and welcome back (if you left). It's good to hear from you again.

Congratulations, Omega.

Welcome to the "real" world. Corporate life is a lot different from college life, but I'm sure you'll do fine.

If you don't mind my asking, how big is the company you'll be working for? I work for a very large multi-national computer services company and the size of the company has a big effect on a lot of aspects of your career.

I’d be happy to speak with you if you are curious or whatever.

Technically, I will not graduate until May of next year, but I have already fulfilled the requirements for my degree. It is now a purely bureaucratic process.

Thanks for the wish, Mave.

Well..., I never intended to leave nor have I ever announced that I did....
It's good to hear from you again.
Same here.

When I read this sentence, termyt....

I had this strange, nearly palpable vision of Ancient Southern China, where mist dances between the foliage covered mountains, and floating bishoujos sing sweet chanting songs, as they fire from their palms rose and jasmine scented chi, that smash through the barren and cracked landscape, from which burst forth springs of sweet tea, that form printed-circuit patterns of streams, where electric currents rise up to the sky, creating an ice blizzard in a thundercloud of molten fire, spiraling upward into the starry heavens, spreading forth into a tri-spoke-shadowed pattern that stretches into the multiverse neverending....

*holds head in hand with facial expression of great discomfort.*

Uggghhhh.... spoke and saw too much... need tea.

*falls flat in front of termyt.*

Oh, yes, I am sure of that. A corporation has vastly different goals than an educational/research institute.

It is a large corporation, where each major site/division of operation is in a different USA state. The division here in Florida, where I will be, is the biggest and the actual "heart" of the corporation. In terms of total of employees, it is around the scale of ten thousand of which half are engineers/scientists. The corporation serves all types of organizations in hundereds of countries. At this point, I want to leave it at that, as I want to keep some anonymity for the sake of job security.
termyt wrote:I’d be happy to speak with you if you are curious or whatever.
Thank you. Expect to here from me soon, then.

Um, yeah. That's... um, that's what I, um, was, um, thinking, too. Yeah.
