CAA: Christian Anime Alliance

One of my two hamsters (Midnight) is blind. She does not react to light, or quick movements, or closeness of objects to her eyes. She will jump from being startled if someone touches her even if you reach towards her and pass her eyes. I touch the skin around her eys and she does nothing. However my other hamster (Chipmunk) looks around and prefers the dark places over the light, she will not let my fingers close enough to examine her eyes. I don't have the money to take her to the vet, but I'm pretty sure that Midnight is blind. Anyone else have any blind or partially blind pets?

T_T my doggy is going blind...she's blind in one eye as of now...and she does the same thing...well...if you're on her bad eye side that is. we think it's a result from getting hit by a car. >_>;; ToT my poor doggy! your poor hammy!!! ;-;

well the thing is..she's only 2-3 months old. she must've been born blind

if the hamster was born blind, i don't think anything can be done about that.

anyway, that does not mean that it can't live a happy life.

I don't have any blind pets so i don't think i can offer any valid advice. However, I'm sure Midnight will manage just fine.

Yeah, that is sad, when rodents have problems it is not economical to get them checked out. I have had gerbles in the past, and have had some sad experiences. No blindness, but one of them lost their tail. Another one got canibalised by its sister. That was an unpleasant situation. One of my rats died of chocolate poisoning too. When constabulary dutys to be done, to be done, A rodents lot is not a happy one, happy one.

actually...I was more or less just curious if anyone else had blind pets...>_> if anyone has advice that would be nice...but that wasn't my intention when I started the thread. Sorry if I made it seem that way.

i think that a blind hamster will manage just fine. it can still get around. it still has its sense of smell and hearing.

If it was a blind mouse in a field, it may have problems with predators and nature takes its course. However, since the hamster is a pet, it really has nothing to worry about. Just play with it and take care of it like nothings different.

I've got to agree with Sea and Stars. I see no problem why Midnight shouldn't still lead a happy life. Though probably not entirely the same (but hopefully similar) I remember when we had to raise a sheep, goat, chicken or cow in primary school (I went to a country school. Believe it or not we _do_ have civilisation in NZ, but it was just a school situated in a mostly rural area. ^^; ).

To get to the point of the story, one sheep was raised that was blind in both eyes, but still performed just as well as the others (in a calling contest). In fact, it performed better because the test relied on the animal's ability to recognise the voice of its owner over the crowd. I guess what I'm trying to say is that from all I could see the blind lamb didn't really have any disadvantages and seemed to be living a life that was just as happy and was just as awesome (possibly even awesome-er) than the other lambs. I think the same is probably true of Midnight, substituting hamsters in for lambs, of course.

i once had a hamster that went blind... it was still fun to watch, and still knew it's cage like the back of it's hand (er, paw), but it had ths weird eye disease that was gross, and we had o pt medicine on it's eyes, even though it was blind.

Aww, I just saw the pics. She looks like a nice hampster.
