My teachers are going on strike!!!!

Yeah. I would kinda like the time off but this is my graduating year and I don't think that this is a good thing for me. Has something to do with the fact that our teachers contract just wore off and they want another one but the government doesn't want to give them one. They also want higher pay yada yada yada... You get the picture I'm sure. So any ways, I hope that this is resolved quickly so that I can go back to school. Any comments are welcome about this.

I didn't know teachers COULD strike...
as a future educator I must say that I think that is highly unfair to the students!!!

Just as a note, if this diverges into union/anti-union politics, it will be locked under the no-political-discussions rule.
That said, carry on.

Um...wow. I never knew teachers could do that.
But um, they do deserve more money in most cases...

A news article for those interested:

It looks like the BC government may legislate an end to the strike, although if they do (and if the teachers obey), it will like mean work-to-rule.

A while ago they had a huge strike in our capitol for teachers. I don't pretend to know enough about these kinds of things to argue about it.
But I do think that we should respect our teachers here like they do in Japan. After all, they have to put up with us brats!^ -

Oooo a fellow BCian! Yeah, i went out for driving lessons today and every school I passed had teahcers wearing the signs (and my instructor honked every time for their support :/)
Well luckily for me my college doesn't get effected. Well, not like I have school on Fridays anyway now :p
Back when I WAS in school there's been sooooo many strikes! Back in about 8th grade or so, a strike lasted for about a whole week!
Then students have "student strikes" to "support the teachers". :/

-.-;
I know how you feel sorta... the democratic/anti-republican people from the teacher-s union here in CA keep calling my house telling me what a sucky job governor Arnold is doing and that I should do my part to reinstitute the democratic rule in the state and get rid of Arnold... *rolls eyes*

The fact of the matter is teacher's don't get paid enough for the tough job they have
of trying to squish knowledge into the brains of students.

I am one of those lucky ones....BCIT is not Striking which is good for me. I paid good money to get trained for Joinery. If they did go on strik I would be so chocked that I would start a petition.

My mom is a teacher, my wife is a teacher, I have an emergency substitute license and am considering getting into a program to get my teaching certificate. With all that background, I can guarantee that at least out here, teachers do not get paid squat. I was making more working in a meat packing plant, with no required education than my wife who is a special ed teacher about to complete her master's degree. They get royally reamed for the amount of work they have to do, the amout of education they are required to have and maintain, and the amout of garbage they put up with from students, parents and administration. If anyone has a right to strike, teachers should.

I wondered if we would have someone here who could post this. Thanks!

Yes but that makes it toldoly unfair to the students that are on there grade 12 year.

This is getting really close to a debate, guys.
Yes, it's not fair. However, I hardly think you can blame the instructors for it. The school board is directly responsible, but the state usually make the final money call.

I still don't have school.... hope this ends soon. I do hope that the teachers do get their contract though.

Let's look at the other option. Last night, my wife comes home and tells me that the union declined the school's contract offer. Here it is October, and all the teachers in the district are still working on last year's contract. Which was figured last year, when gas wasn't nearly $3 a gallon, along with other rises in the costs of living, licensing, education ect.
No, when the teachers have to stike to get something close to what they deserve, it is not fair to the students, who face an extended school year or a school year being taught by substitutes or paras. But the fact that the teachers have to strike to earn a decent wage from the school board and the state isn't real high on the fairness meter either.
